Mehso-so

Completely bonkers. I am not one to shy away from monstrous, thematically complex doorstops of books; and parts of this book were amazing. I just feel like it suffered from one or two too many “big ideas” and total narrative mayhem - much too long feeling like I was inside the mind of a raving lunatic with no respite.

I am pleased that I stuck with this, but it took me 38 weeks to finish! There were many starts & stops. It was painful at times. I wondered whether Kaufman was on drugs, is crazy, or just the most bizarre human being I‘ve encountered. Some parts were quite funny and clever. I rarely say this, but I think this would make a better movie than book.

10-30-20: My 89th finished book of the 2020! A neurotic film critic meets a filmmaker who has created a movie that takes 3 months to view. When the critic looses the film and what he believes is now he life‘s work, he decides to recreate the film from memory. What ensues is a fever dream of a journey. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ #antkind #charliekaufman 👍🏼📖#️⃣8️⃣9️⃣

Pickpick

This is my book of the year. I loved it, struggled with it, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Difficult, hilarious, fun, sad, beautiful, and worth the investment of time. I have dealt with my fair share of postmodern literature and metafiction and this book is everything I wished Gravity‘s Rainbow was but isn‘t. Antkind woke me up. I haven‘t posted on Litsy in over a year and this phenomenal, cinematic novel inspired me to do so. Highly recommended.

LiteraryinPA I‘m glad you loved it! @wanderer15 just got this for his birthday and I‘m sure he‘ll want to see your awesome review! 4y

I watched ‘I‘m thinking of ending things‘ last night and now this beast has pushed its way to the top of my TBR. Apologies to all the recent recs that have been relegated 🙈

Billypar Didn't know about this: very exciting! His screenplays remind me of novels a lot of times, so I'm curious how he'll be as an author. 4y
Nute He writes pretty awesome screenplays. Hopefully it proves to be a successful transition over to authorship for him. 4y

“A movie is not only the image on the screen, the sound from the speakers. It is the translation of all this by the brain. It is the social milieu. It is the year you see it, your age, the state of your marriage. It is what happened on the way to the theater, what you expect to happen after, it is who is next to you on each side.”

vivastory How are you enjoying this one? I love Kaufman's movies & am curious about his book. 4y
WanderingBookaneer @vivastory : I love his movies as well, but I am having a hard time with this behemoth. I switched to the audiobook, which is 25 hours long, because I tryst that the journey will lead me to a worthwhile ending. 4y
vivastory Yeah the page length put me off a bit. If I see some positive reviews I'll def be willing to give it a shot. Looking forward to your thoughts on it. 4y
