(2020) There are slow burns, and then there are burns so slow the fire goes out. This is the latter. It probably didn't help that I ear-read this one, and the narrator had some grating verbal tics -- otoh, if I'd tried it in print I think I probably would have bailed.

Others have liked it better -- it was a finalist for an Edgar -- so ymmv.

I have a feeling that there are some kind of markers separating passages that are not translating to #audiobook, so I'm gonna bail on the audio and wait for my print copy from the library to come in and see if it grabs me in that format. As it is I'm confused about what I think are jumps in time?

The suspense builds through the book as Thomas connects Ines's growing recognition of Catherine House's cult-like practices to the reader's understanding. ⠀

The pace was, for me, sleepy at times--I'm more patient than most with a slow build, but this was a bit slow even for me--⬇️ 5y
