The characters were going through some challenging times in a tough community that fights for its own. Thomas is writing at the top of her game! Completing my collection! Miss Angie Thomas. I will not cry again!

Another great book by Angie Thomas. It has a compelling story line and addresses important topics. (I already have Concrete Rose downloaded to listen to. Definitely an Angie Thomas fan.) Bahni Turpin is one of my all-time favorite narrators too. Win-win-win! #Audible #audiobook

My first Angie Thomas read, I‘m told the Hate U Give is even better than this one.

Loved it!! Angie Thomas is my go to YA author. I‘m not going to say it was as good as THUG, but it was a different good. Angie Thomas educates me. And thanks to her, I now have Parliament‘s “Flashlight” on my iTunes. Yes, I‘m old and I grooved to that song when I was 16! Loved the characters, including Bri, and I got a kick out of Curtis. 4⭐️

Started this one on audio. Enjoying so far! I loved THUG and I think it is the same narrator for this one! 😍 can‘t wait to learn more about Bri.

If you haven‘t read a book by Angie Thomas, I don‘t know what you‘re waiting for. Her characters and plot are so well developed. I‘ve never been a hip hop fan, but On the Come Up has me wanting to look more into the lyrics of songs.

Oh my gosh. Anyone who says authors loose their mojo after an incredible first sellout don‘t know Angie Thomas. On the Come Up is an incredible story of family, grief, following ones dreams and figuring who you are. Brianna may have played in to the role of “hoodlum rat”, but she quickly discovered she didn‘t like playing that role. She wanted to get her come up all on her own. She wants to rap her own, not what others tell her to. Y‘all read it

I‘m always weird about new people, I guess. The more people in your life, the more people who can leave your life, you know? I‘ve lost enough as it is. - This hits hard

Alright. The stage has been set. Bri has put her song up as out. She‘s feeling good about it. Things are looking up for her, even if her family is still having so much trouble. Interested in how her grandma -who doesn‘t like her pas drug abuse mother- and how her half-Manager-half-Aunt will either help or hinder her as (hopefully) her fame grows outside her school

That‘s what we call our goal, the come up. It‘s when we finally make it with this rap stuff. I‘m talking get-out-of-the-Garden-and-have-enough-money-to-never-worry-again make it.

This hits hard. I can feel Brianna wanting to do something about being racially profiled - and harassed because of it - as with her mother telling her to put her safety over standing up. Really like how mom‘s not discrediting Bri, though; agreeing she has so much power.

So the official prompt I am using for this one is “A Litsy Awards Winner“
And boy is it ever! It was super great! I know why it was voted as an award winner. It was such a powerful story. I recommend if anyone wants to read it to listen to it on Audio because of the rapping it just made the story come alive!

Been hearing such good things —- and I needed an audio for my work commute

I adored this, and highly recommend the audio. This story is going to stick with me for a long time. I loved Bri (Bree? Hard to know spellings when you're listening to the audio), her family (especially her mom Jay), and her friends. I'm really sad it's over!

Book 66 A coming-of-age story of Bri, a black teen that goes to a predominantly white high school and wants to be a rapper but lives in a world where food and heat isn't guaranteed but racism and racist assumptions are. Bri is a dynamic character, and the story is engaging and enjoyable. Props to the voice actor, who also did the voice work in The Hate You Give.

Started this this morning. It's so great. Highly recommend the audio.

This book does not disappoint after reading The Hate You Give, last year. This YA novel follows Brianna Jackson who wants to be a rapper while she juggles her school, friendships, comparisons to her dead father who was also a reaper, and her family consisting of her mother and elder brother. The book describes racism, hypocrisy, unemployment, poverty, and incarceration. Nevertheless, the book is also extremely hopeful. #booked2020 #hatoncover
