22 #65 Usually a WW2 story has clearly defined heroes, heroines and villains. The Allies=good. German=bad. This novel delves into the gray areas. Not everything is black and white. Good people can get caught up in bad things. A good premise but I wasn‘t overly attached to any character in the book. Not even the protagonist. Maybe all the gray marred the likability. In spite of that still a good read.

I JUST finished this book. Oh my gosh, what a good book!! I will absolutely seek out more books by this author. Sometimes there is an angle to an event, a point of view that we don't realize we never examined. I highly recommend!

Bklover I‘ll have to check this one out! 4y

Overall not too bad. However I do wish there was more flashback and more backstory to the characters to give them more depth and feeling. The characters were well done but it just felt like they needed more substance to them and I think backstory would contribute more and give them more personality. Plot was ok, a bit predictable. Good read though.

The time just after WWII was a special, but often overlooked time. Especially, when it comes to Germany. Anika Scott, living in Germany since 2001, is now trying to put the lives of the war survivors back together. And she does that incredibly well, without whitewashing what happened, and without closing her eyes for what life was like in the ruins of what people used to call home.

A very different take on the aftermath of WWII, this novel is about a collaborator wanted for war crimes and her search to find her missing best friend before an Allied officer captures her. Clara is a complex character and the novel deals well with morality and intention as well as how much knowledge is too much and how much action is too little. 1946 Germany: Clara oversaw part of her family‘s ironworks business during WWII. Her parents were Nazi sympathizers. Clara is now wanted by the Allies for war crimes. The story really made me think about complicity and how far-reaching it was/is. I also didn‘t know the extent of destruction, starvation, and homelessness after the war. So much difficulty for all types of people. This is an eye-opening, thought-provoking, suspenseful post-war story.

I‘m overdue for posting a Max🐱pic so here‘s one from earlier this evening when he was napping outside on the lanai after enjoying his favorite ahi for dinner.😻🐟 He has no issue with social distancing of course, as long as he remains well fed. Now he‘s napping inside, while I start the tagged book for a review next week & watch/listen to One World: Together At Home. Hope everyone is safe & well tonight.

1946 Essen Germany - post-war German perspective. Clara Falkenberg, “Iron Fraulein”, is hunted by British Captain Fenshaw for war crimes. Clara is looking for her best friend, Elisa, and her son, Willy. Jakob Relling is also looking for Elisa and bans together with Clara. Well-researched book about family secrets, guilt, forgiveness & justice. Complex characters & well-paced plot. Thoroughly engaging. Recommend to historical fiction lovers. 4/20

LinesUponAPage @Aussie4paws thank you. I‘m guessing you have Aussie Shepherds by your profile name? Our little dog is an Aussie Collie mix. Although, she has more of the Ausssie tendencies than Collie ones. We have two mini Aussie grand pups too. Are yours mini or full? I‘d love to see a photo. 5y

This book truly took you on an adventure! You thought you knew what was coming next but it would always take a twist. I loved Clara and her strong sense of self. She knew what she had to do during the war and accepted the changes post war. She stayed strong and that‘s what made her such a wonderful character to read about.
