Honest and eloquent! Brand, who has struggled with addictions to heroin, alcohol, sex, fame, food, and eBay, has a coherent and comprehensive approach with a touch of humor. “This manual for self-realization comes not from a mountain but from the mud...My qualification is not that I am better than you but I am worse.” ―Russell Brand

JenReadsAlot Loved this one and have recommended to my clients as well! 2y
Andrew65 Definitely an interesting and quite unique man. Well done 👏👏👏 2y
Eggs @JenReadsAlot Agree 💯! Best synthesis I‘ve encountered for freedom from addiction/self actualisation. Are you a therapist? 2y
Eggs @Andrew65 I didn‘t know much about him until the last few months 2y
JenReadsAlot I am! I mainly do addiction treatment but some mental health as well. 2y

Ok. I'd Forest like to start with a disclaimer that I was caught up on a black Friday sale and saw a book by Russell Brand (whom I adore!) and scooped it up. I didn't realize it was a self-help book until I started it.
Overall, I felt this was a very well written book. The unique personality of the author gives this book a humorous aspect while still discussing a very serious issue. I love hearing the personal experiences the author included.

I did not think I‘d have so much in common with Russell Brand. Due to his accent, I preferred listening to him read his own book to me more than reading my hard copy. He did go off on quite a few tangents that made absolutely no sense to me but he would eventually come back around to recovery. Enjoyable, practical, and helpful.

Absolutely loved it but then I do love him and I actually really enjoyed listening to him read it.
Funny, honest and very moving. I found the part about Amy Winehouse really sad as I loved her 😢

Read as part of the #booknerdchallenge to listen to an audiobook of a memoir or autobiography read by the author.

This book is real, raw and in your face. Has quite the edge to it but it's more about Russell brands story and the basic 12 steps you hear at an AA meeting.

"...ask yourself, the inner voice, the part of you that has always been there...when your heart was broken, every time you've ever felt unloved, alone, or lost...this continuing perspective that is...the thing that let's you know that you are you..., the thing with which your memories are threaded together...which shines your aspirations on to the screen of knowing. Ask this thing, 'Am I serving you?' 'Am I happy?' 'Do I have a problem?'

Since getting clean and becoming a #father Russell Brand has used his experience and knowledge to help & encourage others. He uses the 12 step programme in this book in his own unique, funny way to help guide people with addictions & show how the steps were pivotal in his recovery. I listened to the audio of this and I got so much from it. He‘s such a fascinating person to watch and listen to. I love his honesty 💛 #readingresolutions

Russel Brand so far delivering the 12 step approach with blunt and humorous comments. As a therapist I for sure implement this style with my clients and love finding authors with a similar style to recommend.

I liked how he has dissected addictive behavior. Also listening to russel's British accent was fun and I couldn't help laugh at every time he asked the question: "are you a bit fucked?" In his proper English tone loll

“Addiction is when natural biological imperatives, like the need for food, sex, relaxation or status, become prioritised to the point of destructiveness. It is exacerbated by a culture that understandably exploits this mechanic as it's a damn good way to sell Mars bars and Toyotas.”

Russell Brand takes the 12-step program and makes it his own! He explains how each step might effect people, how he personally handled it, and his results. Although I borrowed the audiobook from the library, I plan on buying a copy. I need to listen to this fortnightly! 💜💜💜

I relive my traumas quite frequently which means that often times I find refuge in things that can ease the pain or numb it. It‘s been a challenge to live with myself; to find pleasure, to play, to just enjoy this small slice of life. Because, the pain. To ease that pain I have used food. Periods of deprivation followed by periods of binge eating, all to the detriment of my soul and body. This book enlightened me enough to find hope and support.

The subject is not my thing BUT Russell Brand, while an acquired taste, is 100% my jam. He narrates this audio book.
