What a feast! Covering the Kingdom of Jerusalem from 1163 to 1187, Sharon Kaye Penman weaves a lush & astonishing story of 4 kings, a sultan, their societies & the life of a warrior lord. Loved Balian, Baldwin, Maria, William & Anselm, the invented character. Penman‘s gift for “detailed details” amongst a riveting tale, good dialogue with a multitude of characters & changing landscape, shines here. This may be my favourite book of hers. 4/5

Wanting a meaty historical saga, I picked up Sharon Penman‘s “The Land Beyond the Sea.” I am so enjoying it! Savouring it really. She weaves a thorough tale, truly a written tapestry. RIP Sharon and thank you.

I preordered this months ago! 😁 So excited although it is a doorstop of a book at over 800 pages.
Got a feeling, 2021 is gonna be ‘The year of the Chunkster‘ for me. 👍

Great bargain today! And probably the best way to read it as the book is massive.

More history than fiction, as always, Penman‘s latest novel is impeccably researched, beautifully detailed, and absolutely compelling. She has a gift for bringing historical figures out of obscurity into glorious three dimensional life. The reader knows how the story ends, yet one can‘t help but be swept up in the fear, joy, anger, and heartbreak surrounding the fate of Kingdom of Jerusalem and her inhabitants.

“William had once told Balian that three-quarters of the half-million inhabitants of Outremer were Muslims, the majority poor farmers and peasants who scrabbled out a hard living in a land inhospitable to men of any faith. Remembering that, Balian was reminded of an old folk saying, that when elephants fought, it was the ants who were trampled.” 🐘 🐜

I‘ve become a lazy reader since using the Bookly app. I‘m disappointed when my pace is anything slower than 1.5 minutes per page, instead of just enjoying a book. This month will test that. I know I‘m @ 2 min/page with Penman and several of the other authors on my TBR. I also know I love and trust those authors to deliver a riveting story. It‘s just a little shocking to see the reality of just how long it will take me to finish the book. 😳

Sorry last minute it‘s hard to choose! I‘m going for the tagged book because Penman new books are so rare, always big books, a great read and looking at my shelves this morning I wished I was reading again for the first time.

So excited to start this new historical fiction by one of my favorite authors!

Brilliant, wonderful historical fiction. Penman never lets me down. The Queen of historical fiction does it again.
The story is about Jerusalem and the ongoing battle between Christians and Muslims. I knew the very basics of this story, but Penman brings every bit alive and every character. It‘s been my comfort blanket this week and was a wonderful read ❤️❤️

Nearly there ❤️ I‘m very grateful for having the 12th century to return to every day this week, because the 21st has been nasty.
I think probably the worst week of my working career. So stressful, got up today and had a good cry in the shower and hopefully put my work face back on.

AAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!! I didn‘t think this was coming out until April (and I thought I had preordered it and apparently had not 🤦🏻‍♀️) but LOOK! I stopped at B&N on my way to vote. Isn‘t it gorgeous?
