Do You Mind If I Cancel?
Do You Mind If I Cancel?: (Things That Still Annoy Me) | Gary Janetti
Fans of David Sedaris, Jenny Lawson, and Tina Fey... meet your new friend Gary Janetti. "Gary Janetti's book is so rolling-on-the-floor funny, so brilliantly observant, and so full of heart. Kevin Kwan, New York Times bestselling author of the Crazy Rich Asians trilogy "Almost as soon as I began to read Gary Janettis Do You Mind If I Cancel?, I found myself feeling the way I felt when I first encountered Fran Lebowitz and David Rakoff: laughing and wanting to shout out the best bits to whoever else was in the room, even if no one else was there." Benjamin Dreyer, New York Times bestselling author of Dreyer's English Gary Janetti, the writer and producer for some of the most popular television comedies of all time, and creator of one of the most wickedly funny Instagram accounts there is, now turns his skills to the page in a hilarious, and poignant book chronicling the pains and indignities of everyday life. Gary spends his twenties in New York, dreaming of starring on soap operas while in reality working at a hotel where he lusts after an unattainable colleague and battles a bellman who despises it when people actually use a bell to call him. He chronicles the torture of finding a job before the internet when you had to talk on the phone all the time, and fantasizes, as we all do, about who to tell off when he finally wins an Oscar. As Gary himself says, These are essays from my childhood and young adulthood about things that still annoy me. Original, brazen, and laugh out loud funny, Do You Mind if I Cancel? is something not to be missed.

Quick, entertaining audiobook that is vaguely similar to Sedaris. I laughed at several parts, got bored with a few, but overall it was enjoyable.

I love a comedy writer. This gave me so many laughs! Jumped around a bit and repeated a few stories but overall was sad and funny at the same time.

I don‘t know much about Gary Janetti, but this book definitely didn‘t make me a fan of his...

megnews As an introvert, I love the name though 😂 5y
candority @megnews Same! It‘s why I wanted to read it. I guess I shouldn‘t have judged a book by its title! 5y

Funny essays about being young and trying to make it. Apparently the author had a famous social media? And he wrote on a lot of tv that I had no idea he was apart of.

Fun but not terribly substantive, this collection of essays shares Janetti‘s early life, his aspirations to be a writer, and the long (often unmotivated) path he took to get there, and his understanding of his own sexuality. The asides are pretty entertaining and you don‘t really have to know who he is to find this one a breezy and enjoyable read. Janetti and I are the same age, so I can relate to some of his childhood memories. I was delighted to read that he contributed greatly to Will & Grace and Vicious—I enjoy(ed) both of those shows immensely.

Gary Janetti is a new-to-me writer/person. Having heard good things about this book, I gave it a go, figuring it might be a good countermeasure to the endless hours of impeachment hearings I‘ve been putting into my ears. 😣 It was. Funny and acerbic but also sweet and reflective. Recommended on its own merits, not only as a distraction from painful civic duties. 😁

3.5-4⭐️ I enjoyed this one. I like Janetti‘s writing and humor. This is different than his IG account. It‘s more introspective and ruefully reminiscing as he reveals snapshots of his life. Janetti almost takes on a Walter Mitty approach to life in his imaginings of various scenarios in his head which show us, he‘s a dreamer at heart. He admits to being petty. He is. Yet, this book reveals he‘s human. It‘s a combo of humor and partial memoir.

🥃Wednesday afternoon became Happy Hour and a book while I wait for an event tonight.

Janetti is humorous, whimsical, snarky, occasionally pettily judgmental, all with a nostalgic charm as he self deprecatingly reminisces snapshots of his life for us. I‘m here for it. I voted for him in the Humor category of the Goodreads 2019 Best Reads. He made the semi finals by write in noms. Highly recommend sending him a vote!

EKonrad Do you follow him on Instagram? He‘s hilarious! 😄 5y

“I remembered it all. And he remembered none of it. Well, not me anyway. But isn‘t that the risk you take when you say to someone, “remember?””

✍🏼Janetti has such a way with words. Reading the snippets he shares from his life broadens and humanizes the person behind the hilarious yet snarky Instagram account. I‘m enjoying his writing immensely so far.

At the doctor for the kid‘s sports physical and I started this book of autobiographical essays for #nfnov. I am not a pop culture person so I don‘t actually know who Janetti is but #til I‘d never have made it as an actor or in anything Hollywood or Broadway related.
