The Books of Earthsea
The Books of Earthsea | Ursula K. Le Guin
Celebrating the 50th anniversary of the timeless and beloved A Wizard of Earthsea - '...reads like the retelling of a tale first told centuries ago' (David Mitchell) - comes this complete omnibus edition of the entire Earthsea chronicles, including over fifty illustrations illuminating Le Guin's vision of her classic saga. Contains the short story, 'The Daughter of Odren', published in print for the first time, and her last story 'Firelight'. Ursula K. Le Guin's Earthsea novels are some of the most acclaimed and awarded works in literature-they have received prestigious accolades such as the National Book Award, a Newbery Honor, the Nebula Award, and many more honors, commemorating their enduring place in the hearts and minds of readers and the literary world alike. Now for the first time ever, they're all together in one volume-including the early short stories, Le Guin's "Earthsea Revisioned" Oxford lecture, and new Earthsea stories, never before printed. With a new introduction by Le Guin herself, this essential edition will also include over fifty illustrations by renowned artist Charles Vess, specially commissioned and selected by Le Guin, to bring her refined vision of Earthsea and its people to life in a totally new way. Stories include: 'A Wizard of Earthsea', 'The Tombs of Atuan', 'The Farthest Shore', 'Tehanu', 'Tales From Earthsea', 'The Other Wind', 'The Rule of Names', 'The Word of Unbinding', 'The Daughter of Odren', and 'Earthsea Revisioned: A Lecture at Oxford University' With stories as perennial and universally beloved as The Chronicles of Narnia and The Lord of The Rings-but also unlike anything but themselves-this edition is perfect for those new to the world of Earthsea, as well as those who are well-acquainted with its enchanting magic: to know Earthsea is to love it. - 1,008 pages - 56 illustrations (including seven lavishly coloured plate sections) - maps of Earthsea - stunningly beautiful endpapers - Six novels - 4 short stories - An essay

The reason I got out of my pyjamas this morning of the long weekend #thankscharlie was to collect these free #sustainablestockton goodies. The littlest step daughter was very excited by the tagged book. It is stunning. Hopefully it will encourage her to read more. The fish book is for my nephew.

I'm actually grateful that I didn't read these books until I was an adult. I'm not sure they would have hit the same for my younger self. I really loved the lecture given at the end that she included called Earthsea Revisioned. It discusses the decisions she made regarding gender and the hero archetype within these books. It is very enlightening about her own growth as an author. This is, hands down, my new favorite series.

GatheringBooks I own a copy of this tome of a book but only managed to read the first story. I should get back to it soonest. The art is gorgeous. 💕 1y

I sincerely doubt I'll get through all of these, but I'm going to finally crack into this chunkster for #authoramonth. I ADORE Ursula K. LeGuin!

Name the last book that made you cry. (Without spoilers please.) The story in book 5 of this omnibus, The Books of Earthsea, called "On the High Marsh" just did me in. (Kiki napping in the sun was oblivious.)

At 993 pages this one is going to take me a minute to get through. But to be fair it is because it is all 4 books in one, plus additional content. I'm loving it so far though. (Fireplace courtesy of YouTube tv.)

shanaqui Oh, the illustrated version is so beautiful! 2y

I'm planning on starting this series soon. I've only heard good things, and I want to replace HP in my brain for obvious reasons. I'm pretty excited about it. (This is the replacement book they sent. Sadly some of the pages are folded but I didn't trust getting a better copy given their track record.)

My husband ordered me a book he knew I wanted from Amazon. This is the condition it arrived in. You cannot convince me that whoever boxed it didn't know it was damaged. Or maybe they damaged it themselves. Luckily returns are easy. But another reason why brick and mortar stores are better. Can I get a moment of silence for this poor book though.

TheBookHippie Awe 😫 poor book. 2y

Today‘s B&N haul, yep, bags too which are gorgeous! What I‘m most excited about is this absolute gem I got, The Books of Earthsea!!! I‘ve been trying to buy this book for the LONGEST time, like over a year!! I started reading the copy I borrowed from the library but when I turned it back in, I vowed the next time I picked it back up, it would my own copy. I‘m excited for the others too, don‘t get me wrong, lol! 🙌🏽🙌🏽😍❤️❤️

#WyrdAndWonder day 12: Desert Island Reads

If I were stranded on a desert island, what 8 books, 1 other entertainment & 1 comforting item would I take? I couldn‘t get everything in shot (the castaway elves will have to sort me out with some hard copies 😂)

This is a rather physical task to read, so I seem to mostly haul it into my lap and read in long bursts, rather than my usual chapter here and there. Apparently I know the text so very well that I can spot minor changes from the Penguin edition I have, e.g. “for this skill of plain sailing had been somewhat sacred on Roke“ -> “for this skill of plain sailing had been somewhat scanted“ (obviously a good correction).

shanaqui ...But someone has also corrected “in wizardly fashion“ (i.e. in the fashion of a wizard) to “in wizardry fashion“, which I think makes much less sense. 4y

This edition is soooooo great. I couldn‘t pass it up even though I already had nice copies of other editions. The illustrations are spot on and Le Guin‘s forewords and afterwords are amazing. I got sucked into a pandemic comfort read. I miss you so hard, Ursula Le Guin.

This series was a fabulous journey in a world very much like our own exploring themes of power, responsibility, balance, freedom, life, death, feminism, and so much more. I loved reading not only the original books themselves but also the added content. Ursula K LeGuin's forewords & afterwards were just as interesting to read as the stories themselves. And the extra bonus with this addition is Charles Vess' brillant artwork!

I gave this volume of Le Guin's Earthsea series to my husband in June and then heard Charles Vess speak on the process and work involved with his illustrations for this project in July. I've been wanting to start it ever since but have been daunted a bit the size of this massive volume. Now seems like a good time to start the 992 pages! (I'm thinking though that this is going to be a read at home and not carry around with me undertaking! 😉)

TheSpineView I read the whole series when it was first published. It was really good. I hope to reread and some point. 5y
Booksnchill Beautiful edition- I have leafed through it but not taken the plunge to buy it. Work of art! (edited) 5y
BekaReid @TheSpineView I'm really looking forward to it! First few chapters sucked me in this afternoon. @Booksnchill the artwork is gorgeous! 5y

#shelfie of some beautiful books in my library. Anyone seen the new Dune edition? It's beautiful.

Lizpixie I have Dune in the Penguin Galaxy Edition. It‘s simple but beautiful. 5y
LibrarianRyan I want that Dune edition so bad. I saw it in the book store on Sunday, but I restrained myself. However, I get paid Friday, and Saturday is Sister-in-law day, and our number one stop is the book store, so I might finally indulge. 5y

I'd heard about this book and saw it online but I didn't fully appreciate the scale until I saw it in person today. Wow it is a) beautiful and b) huge. Just look how it dwarfs GRRM. It's also 80$. I didn't open it too much since I wasn't going to buy it and didn't want to damage it, so I don't have a great sense of the inside.

shanaqui It's really gorgeous inside! I should start my reread and post some photos. 6y
llwheeler @shanaqui Ooh yes! The endpapers looked gorgeous. I definitely think I'll get this at some point but probably for a special occasion gift. Maybe next Xmas 6y
shanaqui Yeah, my wife bought me it for Christmas. I'd been hankering after it since before it came out! 6y

I have been reading to my daughter since she was seven days old, seven years old, now seventeen - and until she turns 27, 37, 47, 57 - or until I am breathing and can still read. We had to abandon the illustrated Don Quixote which we were enjoying greatly last December, because #WomenReadWomen2019. So now, we have just finished the second chapter of the massive Books of Earthsea. Biblical tome of a book. LeGuin. Fave Christmas Book Loot!

Paula3 Beautiful ♡ 6y
TheLibrarian Do you like that book? My husband wants it and I‘ve been contemplating buying it for him. 6y
GatheringBooks @TheLibrarian my daughter is not much of a fantasy/sci fi reader. she is more a contemporary realistic fiction kind of girl, but this one she enjoys. the reader knows that she is in the hands of a deft, capable, and magical storyteller. we are really enjoying it. :) 6y
