Dancing at the Pity Party
Dancing at the Pity Party | Tyler Feder
Part poignant cancer memoir and part humorous reflection on a motherless life, this debut graphic novel is extraordinarily comforting and engaging From before her mother's first oncology appointment through the stages of her cancer to the funeral, sitting shiva, and afterward, when she must try to make sense of her life as a motherless daughter, Tyler Feder tells her story in this graphic novel that is full of piercing--but also often funny--details. She shares the important post-death firsts, such as celebrating holidays without her mom, the utter despair of cleaning out her mom's closet, ending old traditions and starting new ones, and the sting of having the "I've got to tell Mom about this" instinct and not being able to act on it. This memoir, bracingly candid and sweetly humorous, is for anyone struggling with loss who just wants someone to get it.

This graphic novel about losing a parent to cancer was heartfelt, vulnerable, and even at times humorous. I really feel like I got to know the author and her family, especially her awesome mom. Shows a lot about what grief can look like. I definitely recommend it.

Kenyazero I've had this on my radar for a while. It sounds interesting! It's waiting in the wings for my life to calm down a little 😆 1y

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
If you have lost a parent as a young person, this is the realest look at that experience. Especially moving, I‘m sure, if you‘ve experienced a loss via cancer, this should be required reading for everyone. Grief is hard, sometimes it‘s very funny & sometimes it doesn‘t let you get out of your bed. Feder shows both of these, and many other truths, with ease.

Beautiful and moving graphic memoir. Feder was only 19 when she lost her bright and loving mother to cancer. In this she celebrates the amazing person her mother was and tries to navigate grief to learn to live without her.

In this graphic memoir, the author shares her experience of losing her mother to cancer when she was 19. With warmth, humor, and great vulnerability, Feder charts 10 years of her life without her Mom.

Awww. Great YA graphic novel for any age. Autobiographical story of a young woman whose mother dies during the narrators freshman year of college. It‘s part homage to her mother, but mostly an honest exploration of grief. I cried, for sure, but found it soothing and a helpful insight into what to do (and what not to do) when someone you love is grieving.

The author and I both lost relatively young parents to cancer at relatively young ages. I related so deeply to this book in so many ways. She captures the sad, funny, awkward, and more. I knew I was going to relate to it from the intro when she talked about how uncomfortable cracking dead mom jokes makes people, and as someone who has cracked my share of dead dad jokes, YES. This is one of the most relatable books on grief/loss I've ever read.

This was a very personal read. My mom died of cancer in 2019 and a lot of what happens in this book happened to my mom; chemo destroying the body, the slow loss of lucidity, etc. The book really captures the experience of what it is like to lose someone slowly to cancer. I won't say I cried reading this, but it did leave me feeling a bit raw. I would recommend it to anyone looking for graphic novel memoirs or books covering the topic of cancer.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/ Being a member of the dead moms club isn‘t easy and even though my relationship with my mom was totally different from Tyler‘s I could still relate to her grieving process. My moms deathaversary and her b day are especially hard for me. Also learned stuff about Jewish culture that I didn‘t know. Excellent read

Pre-Litsy, I never read graphic novels and now 4/12 of the best books I read this year are in that genre. Dancing at the Pity Party captured grief quite well.

Library run to pick up these two reads. Dancing...is a graphic memoir about the author‘s loss of her mother. The other selection (The Hate U Give) is my #newyearwhodis selection c/o @dariazeoli - can‘t wait to dive in in just a few weeks.

I recently had a big loss in my life and haven‘t been able to really talk to anyone about it so when this book crossed my desk I definitely had to check it out. And so far, it‘s summing up a lot of difficult things really well.

This book is THE BEST!!! I highly recommend it if you have lost your mom, know someone who has, or if you will someday lose your mom. It is both funny and heartbreaking, highly specific and also universal.
