You Have Arrived at Your Destination
You Have Arrived at Your Destination | Amor Towles
25 posts | 42 read | 11 to read
Nature or nurture? Neither. Discover a bold new way to raise a child in this unsettling story of the near future by the New York Times bestselling author of A Gentleman in Moscow.
When Sam’s wife first tells him about Vitek, a twenty-first-century fertility lab, he sees it as the natural next step in trying to help their future child get a “leg up” in a competitive world. But the more Sam considers the lives that his child could lead, the more he begins to question his own relationships and the choices he has made in his life.
Amor Towles’s You Have Arrived at Your Destination is part of Forward, a collection of six stories of the near and far future from out-of-this-world authors. Each piece can be read or listened to in a single thought-provoking sitting.

Four stars because I didn't completely understand what was going on here, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.

CollapsingLibrary Is this a collection of short stories by different authors? 1y
currentlyreadinginCO @CollapsingLibrary yes, I recently discovered Amazon Original Stories and I'm obsessed with this sci fi collection, Forward! 1y

This was a fascinating Amazon original short story about parents being able to select the genetics of their children in the future. A weird little book, but made you think.

This had to be the most disappointing book of this short story series. I just could not get into this one; it lost me very early on.

#scifi #sciencefiction

ChaoticMissAdventures I have not read this series but over and over I am seeing people disappointed by authors I love 😔. Short stories can be so hard to pull together well. 3y
speljamr @ChaoticMissAdventures I'm sure it's just the story itself. Just didn't grab me. Other stories in this short story series are excellent. But I'm sure this is not a reflection on the author's other works either. 3y
Eliza-beta Oh no. What a bummer. I love his other books. 3y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I was unimpressed by this one, too. 3y

Another day, another short story in the Forward collection 😋 This was a bit like an episode of Black Mirror. The idea was interesting but it didn't quite get there for me. ⭐⭐⭐

This is so different from Towles‘ novels! It makes me wonder how he ended up writing for this collection.

A couple thinking about IVF are considering using a company that can pick and choose genetic features to “optimize” the future child‘s life. The father gets a projected view of three personality options for his son.

Left me thinking not only of the ethics of the story, but the impact of reproducing all together. 👍👍

AmyG Is this a new or old book? 4y
Cortg Huh. It looks like it‘s only available through Amazon Kindle, but it‘s free and I loved his other two books so I picked it up! @AmyG 2019 but only through kindle, I believe. 4y
AmyG Ah thanks @Cortg 4y

Soubhiville @AmyG @Cortg it‘s a short story. I think there was a series of six in the collection by different authors, and it was a kindle free thing some time ago. This is the only one of the six I‘ve read. 4y
BookNAround I have a hardback copy of this somehow. 🤷‍♀️ @AmyG I can see if I can find it in the chaos around here and send it to you if I do. (edited) 4y
Hooked_on_books I‘m glad you‘re still ok! Are you back home yet? Or any hope of getting there anytime soon? I‘ve been thinking about you. 4y
AmyG @BookNAround I just wanted to make sure I wasn‘t missing a new book...thank you for the offer, though. 😘 4y
Soubhiville @Hooked_on_books we‘re going to go home this evening. There‘s still no water, but the power has been stable for a day and the town says water should be coming back as pressure rebuilds. The worst of the weather is past, tomorrow we creep above freezing at least during the day. 4y
Hooked_on_books I‘m glad things are looking up! And it‘s good that you have a Vermont background and understand snow and ice, since many people there likely don‘t. I‘d like to see things change with your state‘s approach to infrastructure, but something tells me that won‘t happen, even with this disaster. 4y
AmyG Glad you are ok. Every time I see Texas on the news I think about you. 😘 (edited) 4y
Mitch @Soubhiville so happy to know you can return home. Been thinking so much of you all. Sending you warm hugs xxx (edited) 4y

Fertility clinics have reached a whole new level. Not only can you choose the gender, hair and eye colour of your child you can also choose the characteristics and contours that will shape your child.

Sam's wife has chooses three models for him to consider and the Fertility clinic has created three short movies for Sam to watch.

Anybody read this collection of short stories by some amazing authors? So good! I've read 4 of 6 so far. Addicting!
"..brings together vastly different authors to theorize on what the future might look like. What binds these stories together is their exploration of possible technological advancements in the not too distant future, without ever really giving away if the changes such advancements would bring would be for our collective good or ill."

readordierachel I've only read the Jemisin and Tremblay, but I liked them both 👍 4y
ItsAnotherJen @readordierachel They are each unique, and really good in their own ways. Bonus-they are free on #kindleunlimited and a great way to reach your end-of-the-year book goals if you are a bit short. Sometimes short stories are a nice break too, if you are reading a really big or really serious book. 4y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I read them earlier this year and overall they were good. Jason Isaac's reading of Emergency Skin was very good. 4y
ItsAnotherJen Update: Randomize is not so great. I feel like most of the first half flew over my head 4y

Story 4 in the #ForwardCollection and the subject matter of genetically engineered human offspring creeped me out so much that I have to give it a pick despite some weaknesses in the second part of the story.

I did not care for "A Gentleman in Moscow", so my expectations were low.

I love love loved Amor Towles‘ A Gentleman in Moscow. One of my all-time favs. I did not like this story at all. I was surprised. Started out with promise and then completely fizzled.

I made it to Madison Street Books today for #indiebookstoreday. Definitely not the same as usual this year but it was my first time back at a bookstore since covid! This short story was just ok. I much preferred his novels. I wish i had gotten to tune into his presentation today, i hope they'll post it still. Anyways, it was a lovely day here and I'm glad I could celebrate indie bookstore day a little bit this year.

Not my favorite in this collection, the premise was good, but then it went through it‘s transformative second act, and threw in a curve ball for the third....I think he just chose to throw in a bit too much for a short story. 🤷‍♀️

My second story in the Forward series and first contact with Amor Towles' work. The story was OK, the idea of enhancing the children (not called genetically engineering by the big company rep but genetic contouring) to give them an advantage in life is not new but all the same scary for the future of human race. But outside the story, I definitely like his writing, I have A Gentleman in Moscow on my list for a while now, I really need to read it.

2 STARS | GRADE D
I was really looking forward to this one because Hopper from Stranger Things narrates it...sadly, I don't think he was very good. Storywise, I really wasn't feeling this one...it kind of felt like it was all over the place. And that ending, it completely lost me.

bookandbedandtea I would have liked this one to be much longer. I think it hints at so much that it doesn't have time in this format to develop. 5y
AudiobookingWithLeah I just felt like it was out in left field. The whole ending, once he was at the bar confused me. Maybe, if it had been longer I could've made sense of it. 5y

I'm really enjoying this series of short stories. I wanted more of this one, to know more about the world this story inhabits.

I actually read this yesterday, the 30th, and today my kindle won't let me reopen it. Does anyone know if you can only read a kindle unlimited book once?

I love everything Amor Towles does, and this was no exception. This short story gives us a picture of a world just a few years ahead of ours, with a plausible picture of where our automized, personalized, and meddling choices may land us. It‘s subtle, but it‘s powerful. Many notes of early stages of Brave New World.

I especially appreciated the note about how predictive research can be used in ways that hurt our humanity.

The writing was fine but the story trajectory, especially after the main character leaves Vitek (the fertility clinic) leapt headlong into the navel-gazing chasm and by story's end, I was just glad it was done. All things being equal, I'd have rather re-watched Gattaca.

Sam's wife tells him about Vitek, a fertility lab that allows you to chose what traits your child will have. Sam agrees it could be a great idea until he begins to consider the future of a child with preconceived aspirations and IQ, he begins wondering about his own life, and his ability to chose. Good story of genetic engineering gone rogue.

It started off interesting with the projections of predicting how a human's life can develop before they are even born, but somewhere along the way, it turned into something else that didn't hold my interest. Maybe it's just me, but I failed to understand the point of the whole story.

A thought-provoking & widely relevant short story. Not my favorite in the collection, though I enjoyed Towles‘ prose. Ending was a bit abrupt but it suits the story.
