No Mud, No Lotus
No Mud, No Lotus: The Art of Transforming Suffering | Thich Nhat Hanh
The secret to happiness is to acknowledge and transform suffering, not to run away from it. In No Mud, No Lotus, Thich Nhat Hanh offers practices and inspiration transforming suffering and finding true joy. Thich Nhat Hanh acknowledges that because suffering can feel so bad, we try to run away from it or cover it up by consuming. We find something to eat or turn on the television. But unless were able to face our suffering, we cant be present and available to life, and happiness will continue to elude us. Nhat Hanh shares how the practices of stopping, mindful breathing, and deep concentration can generate the energy of mindfulness within our daily lives. With that energy, we can embrace pain and calm it down, instantly bringing a measure of freedom and a clearer mind. No Mud, No Lotus introduces ways to be in touch with suffering without being overwhelmed by it. "When we know how to suffer," Nhat Hanh says, "we suffer much, much less." With his signature clarity and sense of joy, Thich Nhat Hanh helps us recognize the wonders inside us and around us that we tend to take for granted and teaches us the art of happiness.

Another title from my book bundle from Arabelle Sicardi. Seems like a great resource living with/through hard times.

This is well laid out and easy to read. The last section has some breathing practices and mantras, which I‘ve not gotten to just yet.
If I‘m honest, I‘m not really in the right phase of my life right now where I can embody the philosophies in this book, but hopefully I come back to revisit it one day.

Thanks for the tag, @Letora!

1. I spent it hanging out with my mom, playing with my kitty, eating ramen, and reading Shakespeare, which is a pretty good start, I think. 😁
2. Ohhhh, man, that‘s a tough one, but I guess I‘ll go with No Mud, No Lotus by Thich Nhat Hanh. Runners-up: salt. by Nayyirah Waheed, The Upside of Stress by Kelly McGonigal, and The Great Passage by Shion Miura.

This is an easy book to read, and a hard one to get through. I'm only slightly exaggerating when I say that I read a sentence and then have to sit with it for half an hour! 🤔💭

Karisa I felt the same way about his Peace is in Every Step. Each 1/2 page was equal to a meditation. 5y
Leftcoastzen He‘s amazing. 5y
Bookwomble @Leftcoastzen Agreed 😊 5y
Bookwomble @Karisa Sounds like a good one - I'll keep my eyes out for it 🙂 5y

“The most effective way to show compassion to another is to listen, rather than talk."

Leftcoastzen I love his work! 5y
Bookwomble @Leftcoastzen I've read a few of his books now and they are variations on the same themes, but none the less inspirational for that. In this book about suffering, I'm finding a lot on common with the work of Carl Rogers' on the Person Centred Approach. I'm finding it rather wonderful in that respect. 5y

I loved this tiny book about understanding the nature of struggling/suffering and not allowing it to define you. Beautiful, applicable, helpful and real.

The only way to suffer well and be happy is to stay in touch with what is actually going on; in doing so, you will gain liberating insights into the true nature of suffering and of joy. #nomudnolotus #thictnhathanh

I overdid it yesterday getting my house ready and cooking for company coming over for Easter lunch. So, that means I have some time to sit outside with Lucy and read before I start today's cooking! #score #outsidereading #dogsoflitsy #om #ineedsomeom

A wonderful book, short but very dense and thought provoking. Do we have a warped idea of what it really means to be happy? Can happiness exist even when in pain? Very beautifully written with plenty of wise insights and practical exercises to learn to find joy in the present moment regardless of circumstances. This is a book that I will hold on and come back to regularly.

"There are more conditions of happiness available than you and I can count, many more than it takes to make us happy in the here and the now. If you are able to read a book, to read and understand these words, you are already much luckier than many people."
True!

"Many of us slog through life without conscious awareness or intention. We set ourselves a course and we barrel ahead, without stopping to ask whether this path is fulfilling our most important goals. That's partly because many of us believe that happiness is not possible in the here and now. We think we need to struggle now so that we will be happy in the future."
?

Desha I just saw that Mallika Chopra has a newer book out about intention...it's called "Living with Intent" and today it's $1.99 on Kindle! I'm planning on downloading it! ☺️ 8y

"We fear that if we release our diversions and come back to ourselves, we'll be overwhelmed by the suffering, despair, anger and loneliness inside. So we continue to run away. But if we don't have the time and the willingness to take care of ourselves, how can we offer any genuine care to the people we love?"

"Then there is the suffering of the mind, including anxiety, jealousy, despair, fear and anger. We have the seeds, the potential in us for understanding, love, compassion, and insight, as well as the seeds of anger, hate, and greed. While we can't avoid all the suffering in life, we can suffer much less by not watering the seeds of suffering inside us"

A simple, but not necessarily light read. This book is best savored in small bits and pieces to let the messages root into your being. The theme is mostly about mindfulness with a little bit about breathing, meditation, and mantras. I am guessing I will be coming back to this book many more times.

SusanInTiburon I always like Thay's writing, but I find this one especially encouraging. The title says it all, right? 8y
Well-ReadNeck Kismet. I just ordered this online today at the recommendation of my yoga instructor! 8y
sherri @Susanintiburon - This was the first one I read by him. I always flip through them at the bookstore and finally got one. I liked it a lot. 8y
