Fragrant
Fragrant: The Secret Life of Scent | Mandy Aftel
5 posts | 2 read
Winner of the 2016 Perfumed Plume Award The “Alice Waters of American natural perfume” (indieperfume.com) celebrates our most potent sense, through five rock stars of the fragrant world. Mandy Aftel is widely acclaimed as a trailblazer in natural perfumery. Over two decades of sourcing the finest aromatic ingredients from all over the world and creating artisanal fragrances, she has been an evangelist for the transformative power of scent. In Fragrant, through five major players in the epic of aroma, she explores the profound connection between our sense of smell and the appetites that move us, give us pleasure, make us fully alive. Cinnamon, queen of the Spice Route, touches our hunger for the unknown, the exotic, the luxurious. Mint, homegrown the world over, speaks to our affinity for the familiar, the native, the authentic. Frankincense, an ancient incense ingredient, taps into our longing for transcendence, while ambergris embodies our unquenchable curiosity. And exquisite jasmine exemplifies our yearning for beauty, both evanescent and enduring. In addition to providing a riveting initiation into the history, natural history, and philosophy of scent, Fragrant imparts the essentials of scent literacy and includes recipes for easy-to-make fragrances and edible, drinkable, and useful concoctions that reveal the imaginative possibilities of creating with—and reveling in—aroma. Vintage line drawings make for a volume that will be a treasured gift as well as a great read. From the Hardcover edition.

"The History of Perfume", such a delightful incursion in the world of senses!
Apart from sharing the art of creating a perfume and unravelling the magical and legendary healing and curative universe of natural spices, the book also shows how food and drinks recipes can be improved with essential oils and natural essences. And it also reminded me that grey amber and musk, two of my favorite base notes in a perfume, are actually of animal origin.

I know what she's saying: 'Is this pile going to be read anytime soon? It has been left unattended on my territory for too long...'

I'm building my February TBR pile 📚 with perfume, philosophy and plants as prevalent themes, this could result in an unexpected yet engaging and exquisite mix

Gleeps! 😳😳 I‘m falling behind on my #Gratitude30 posts! Yesterday was devoted to #Scent, and though I have a discriminating sense of smell (I can name almost anything, even when blindfolded!), I cannot be around perfumey scents. But nature‘s perfume—that‘s another story altogether! I gave this lily bulb to a friend almost 20 years ago, and it still survives! This is pic he took last spring to show me how it persists. Lovely scent!
@hermyknee

Velvetfur My sense of smell is like yours but I adore perfume! So it made me chuckle that you don't, I was like 'aahh bless'! 😊 That lily is amazing btw, I can imagine how gorgeous it smells 🌸 6y
Soubhiville Wow, 20 years is impressive! I had no idea they‘d live that long! 6y
gradcat @Velvetfur Sometimes certain perfumes can bring on migraines for me...not all of them, but better to be safe than sorry....😟 6y

gradcat @Soubhiville He (my friend) could be lying about it...he lives in another state, so I‘m not around to verify it, lol. As to how long they live, I have the opposite of a green thumb...so I know nothing about them! The reason we laugh about that bulb is because it was a special they were giving out when I bought a bra at a big department store—can you imagine?! (edited) 6y
Soubhiville @gradcat that‘s hilarious! What a random customer appreciation gift! 6y
Velvetfur @gradcat I understand about them bringing on a headache, I've smelled one or two in my life that have hurt my head a bit! 6y

I made it about a third of the way through. Not as compelling (to me) as the reviews make it out to be. I still want to try the author's handmade perfumes, though.
