Surrender, New York
Surrender, New York: A Novel | Caleb Carr
Caleb Carr, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Alienist and The Angel of Darkness, returns with a contemporary, edge-of-your-seat thriller featuring criminal psychologist Dr. Trajan Jones, the worlds leading expert on the life and work of one Dr. Laszlo Kreizler, the hero of The Alienist, in whose brilliant but unconventional footsteps he follows. In the small town of Surrender in upstate New York, Dr. Jones, a psychological profiler, and Dr. Michael Li, a trace evidence expert, teach online courses in profiling and forensic science from Joness family farm. Once famed advisors to the New York City Police Department, Trajan and Li now work in exile, having made enemies of those in power. Protected only by farmhands and Joness unusual pet, the outcast pair is unexpectedly called in to consult on a disturbing case. In rural Burgoyne County, a pattern of strange deaths has emerged: adolescent boys and girls are found murdered in gruesome fashion. Senior law enforcement officials are quick to blame a serial killer, yet their efforts to apprehend this criminal are peculiarly ineffective. Jones and Li soon discover that the victims are all throwaway children, a new state classification of young people who are neither orphans, runaways, nor homeless, but who are abandoned by their families and left to fend for themselves. Two of these throwaways, Lucas Kurtz and his older sister, Ambyr, cross paths with Jones and Li, offering information that could blow the case wide open. As the stakes grow higher, Jones and Li must not only unravel the mystery of how the throwaways died but also defend themselves and the Kurtz siblings against shadowy agents who dont want the truth to get out. Jones believes the real story leads back to the city where both he and Dr. Kreizler did their greatest work. But will Jones and Li be able to trace the case to New York before they fall victim to the murderous forces that stalk them? Tautly paced and richly researched, Surrender, New York brings to life the grim underbelly of a prosperous nationand those most vulnerable to its failings. This brilliant novel marks another milestone in Caleb Carrs triumphant literary suspense career. Advance praise for Surrender, New York A compulsive read . . . Carr once again delivers a high-stakes thriller featuring a new band of clever, determined outcasts. . . . Sharing my very tentative plans for #booked2023 @Cinfhen @alisiakae @BarbaraTheBibliophage !

These are currently my choices for #winter, no definites here. The prompts on this post and the following 3 go from left to right, top to bottom. So the tagged book is for 'any book in a trilogy', and American Sherlock covers 'proper noun in title'.

KarenUK Love your choices 👍 2y
Cinfhen Another excellent choice - loved 2y
Cinfhen Thanks for sharing your ideas!!! I‘m gonna work on some posts too !!! I‘m waiting to see #pop23 because a lot could change!!! 2y

jenniferw88 @Cinfhen yeah... these are all very tentative! I'm waiting on 52 Book Club's 52 books in 52 weeks challenge to come out (some point in Nov). Not sure about #pop23 yet - will probably look at prompts and decide then. 2y
jenniferw88 @Cinfhen here's the link to the 52 book challenge for this year: https://www.the52book.club/2022-reading-challenge/ 2y
Cinfhen Thanks!!! I‘m trying to slow down on challenges but… #FoMo 2y
Cinfhen Can you tag me when the challenge releases in November?!? 😘I‘m definitely curious 😝 2y
jenniferw88 @Cinfhen of course! I've managed to #doubledip with a few #pop22 prompts this year... 2y
jenniferw88 @Cinfhen they've released 4 prompts already (fb/instagram fans voted for them during October). Set in Dublin, Related to the word 'Murder', Octavia E Butler- inspired, and Books on the cover. #independentwomen buddy read will help with the third 😂 2y
Cinfhen Ohhhhh thanks, Jenny!! I‘m already getting excited 😆 2y
BarbaraBB Thank you Jenny!! 2y

A solid 3.5 (rounded up to 4).
I love a good plot twist and this book had a quite a few of them. The main characters were fun and endearing. And the bad guys kept were memorable.

Sidenote: I highly recommend the audiobook because there are parts of the story that very slow and I can only imagine how boring those parts are without voice narration.

Dear Mr. Carr,

I really enjoyed The Alienist, so I‘m a little concerned about all of the negative reviews on this one. Despite the lack of glowing praise, I‘m curious enough to find out about this story for myself. Fingers crossed. 🤞🏼

The main story of the crime and the relationships between the characters were pretty good, but I felt like the subplot with the giant governmental conspiracy was ridiculous and unnecessary, and made the whole thing far too long.

AmyG I wanted to like this book so much. But...I bailed halfway through. 7y
bookwrm526 @AmyG If I hadn‘t been listening to it on audio I probably would‘ve bailed. I liked The Alienist, though, and I got it as part of a two for one credit sale on Audible, so I stuck it out (edited) 7y

The only interesting aspect of this book was that the main character, Dr. Jones had a pet cheetah! Nearly 600 pages of torture! I only finished because it was a Book Club read. As it turned out, I couldn't finish in time for the meeting. I didn't attend because I did not want the ending revealed. Read his book, The Alienist and it was a first rate thriller! Run as fast as a cheetah from this one! 😬

Cinfhen Love your review 💗 8y

This was right up my alley...I like Caleb Carr's take on criminal profiling and a crime that needs to be solved. The characters were a great fit with each other. There was a good use of humor. And most important, a cheetah! 🎧

Garyrej It's been on my list for awhile now, worth it? 8y
NatalieR @Garyrej Yes, I'm glad I read it. It's really long though. 8y
DivineDiana Waiting for my reserve on this to come in to the Library! A current Book Club read and it is getting late to finish! 😬 8y

So there I was minding my own business, enjoying some Caleb Carr, when suddenly he throws in a piece of rubbish that has now totally ruined the book for me. I wasn't expecting a protagonist with a prosthetic leg. I have one too so that was kind of cool.
But the situation he describes is such nonsense and so improbable that I'm hopping mad (pun totally intended) 🙄 Now I can't take any of the story seriously. Not offended just disappointed.

Took my LFs (Little Friends- I work as a Nanny) to the library today. My happy dance in the New Book section prompted one of my charges to rush to the craft table and whip me up a new personalized bookmark for the occasion 🙂

bookishkai Oh, I like the term Little Friends, SO much better than Nanny Kids. Nice to see another nanny on here! 8y

Having loved his early books so much, I was so disappointed in this one. Had a hard time getting through all 597 pages and ended up skimming a lot of it.
The premise was good I just never connected with the characters. But it does finish letter C in the #litsyatoz challenge

The picture has no point. I just don't like posting without adding a pic of some kind and my daughter is very cute. :)

I love Caleb Carr. The Alienist is one of my favorite books of all time. However, I never really noticed how verbose and...for lack of a better word...Sherlockian his writing is when reading The Alienist or Angel of Darkness. Those books take place in the past and somehow the language fit. In this new book, set in modern times, the language is more noticeable and almost distracting though. Especially since I tend to read when sleepy.

Guys. I've been struggling with this today. Caleb Carr is one of my favorite authors, but this book....so bloated and full of nonsense like this - "We entered a quiet chapel of dreary tragedy, centered on a nave of heartbreak." I've been reading all day and have only made it to page 66. I want to throw it at the wall.

NikkiA I really struggled with this one too! The super-wordy writing does get better towards the end, if that helps..? 8y
MrBook Hmmm, interesting. Some people feel that way about Salman Rushdie's prose. Is this like his? 8y
NikkiA @MrBook I felt like the writing style just didn't fit with the story - it's a contemporary crime novel with this weirdly historical tone & super flowery language. If that makes sense? His writing works really well in The Alienist but here, not so much... 8y
