Gone, Baby, Gone | Dennis Lehane

Boston private detectives Patrick Kenzie and Angela Gennaro are hired to find four-year-old Amanda McCready, abducted from her bed on a warm, Indian summer night. They meet her stoned-out, strangely apathetic mother, her loving aunt and uncle, the mother's dangerous drug-addled friends, and two cops who've found so many abused or dead children they may be too far over the edge to come back. Despite enormous public attention, rabid news coverage, and dogged police work, the investigation repeatedly hits a brick wall. Then a second child disappears....As the two detectives intensify their search, they encounter a media more interested in sensationalizing the abductions than solving them, a midnight ransom drop that explodes into a firefight, a city seething with secrets and rage, and a faceless power determined to keep the children lost forever.

Book 3: Gone,Baby, Gone

This book leaves you with moral questions of right & wrong, social & individual responsibilities, something everyone struggles with everyday. The conflict b/w the 2 PIs on the fate of a 4 year child is most intriguing. The book is complex, serious and beautiful. This book moved me from YA to a more "adult" writing where characters are more developed, have a wider arc. This is a thrilling, gripping ride.

TiredLibrarian Ooh, I loved this book, and I wish Lehane would write more in the Kenzie & Gennaro series! Movie's not bad, either. 5y
Shamzi @TiredLibrarian yes, the movie was good too!! 5y

When a little girl goes missing, Kenzie and Gennaro are called in by the girl‘s aunt and uncle to investigate. The girl‘s mother is more interested in what cash and attention this brings her...she‘s otherwise less than concerned....My first or second Lehane novel and he does not pull his punches! Brutal but compelling. #goneaway #WinterWonderland

TrishB Not read any of this author yet. 6y
CaitlinR I enjoy Lehane. 6y
Ruthiella @TrishB I‘ve only read three from him but they were all good IMO.😀 6y

Lehane's stories are grim but his writing is often lyrical and compelling. These are better than either the standard thriller or usual PI novel. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️and a half.

Really enjoyed this mystery. It had interesting side plots and twists. The part when the PI's were told they had no idea what was really going on rang so true on many levels but you would know the truth of it until the end. Then end was horribly true... It was the reality of the laws and what really happens mixed with sadness of the realisation of these laws and who do they really help and protect. Many mixed emotions in this one.

Sheryl63 I have loved this series and I‘ve seen the movie “Gone, Baby Gone” many times. I‘ve don‘t watch a lot of movies but I watched all of his. I love Boston; I had the pleasure of living in upstate MA in 1993. My husband was going to be moved up there temporarily; we just had our daughter and he said not without my family. I loved New England; I tried to convince him to move up there, but he wasn't having it so have to back TX we came. 7y
AmandaRae @Sheryl63 I would love to go to Boston! I haven't seen the movie but you have inspired me to watch it. 7y

I loved the movie so much that I had to get my hands on the book. Of course, I ended up liking the book 100,000x more. The characters are so vibrant (Angie's character is totally butchered in the movie. It makes me sad that they left so much of her out, unnecessarily.) and the storyline is more logical. If you like hardboiled detectives, horrific crime, and moral dilemmas, check this one out.

Gayan I have had this on my TBR forever, looks like I need to move it up. 8y
winemom @Gayan Pls do! I got a slow start on it, reading a little here and there for a few months, but once I got to chapter 14, I couldn't put it down for a whole day, until I finished. Dennis Lehane just has that hook. 8y
Gayan It's moving up! 8y

"...holes in the fabric of the universe where they will never be heard from again."
I don't know why I thought reading this and watching The Killing Season at the same time would be a good idea. That being said, I highly recommend The Killing Season for my true crime addicts! While the filmmakers are overly melodramatic during some scenes, it's a crime doc done well. ?

Watching Gone Baby Gone again. Read and loved the book but the movie was pretty good. It was amazingly close to the book and done in very realistic way. Only downfall is the female character's attitude got combined into Casey Afflecks character in the movie. I didn't live in Boston when I read it and saw the movie the first time. (in Mass but not Boston) interesting to see it now that I am much more intimate with the city; -)

#somethingforsept : In honor of the first 🔥🔥🔥🔥 trailer for Live By Night and it's equally 🔥🔥🔥 poster dropping, I thought I would highlight the other Dennis Lehane works #madeintoamovie ! Lehane is rare in that there hasn't been a bad movie yet made out of his work (I have not seen The Drop). My favorite is probably Gone Baby Gone - I want more Kenzie/Gennaro movies! And I love the subdued nature of Mystic River and the OTT Shutter Island.

Suzze Loved Mystic River (book and movie). Loved the book Shutter Island, haven't seen the movie. 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage So many good choices' 8y
britt_brooke Really enjoyed Shutter Island, book and movie. 8y
