We‘re all familiar with what happened during the Holocaust, but what about what happened to the survivors in the first few years after the war ended? This novel, based on actual events, tells the stories of a group of survivors who were imprisoned in a British detention camp in Palestine shortly after the war. Friendships are formed, families are made, people live and die, and the conflict between the Israelis and the Palestinians is born.

A fictionalization of the October 1945 rescue of 200+ Jewish prisoners, all WWII survivors, from the Atlit internment camp, a prison for “illegal immigrants.” Told through the eyes of 4 young women: Shayndel, a Polish Zionist; Leonie, a Parisian beauty; Tedi, a hidden Dutch Jew; and Zorah, a concentration camp survivor. Seemed fitting, tonight begins Israel‘s National Holocaust Remembrance Day. I visited Atlit earlier this year 😮😥😡#NeverForget

Just starting this book. Anita Diamant's Red Tent was a treasure so I have high hopes for this one.

After suffering through some mediocre books,it was wonderful to find a wonderful historical novel based closely on actual events. Diamanté put me right in the middle of a detention camp for Jews in Palestine right after the end World War II. We learn about the horrific past experiences and current struggles of four women as they try to live their lives again after losing everyone they loved.
Great story with memorable characters.

Historical fiction at its best. I love when books are about true events and true places with fictional characters who bring these places alive once again.
