The Midnight Lie
The Midnight Lie | Marie Rutkoski
30 posts | 18 read | 43 to read
Where Nirrim lives, crime abounds, a harsh tribunal rules, and society’s pleasures are reserved for the High Kith. Life in the Ward is grim and punishing. People of her low status are forbidden from sampling sweets or wearing colors. You either follow the rules, or pay a tithe and suffer the consequences.
Nirrim keeps her head down and a dangerous secret close to her chest.
But then she encounters Sid, a rakish traveler from far away who whispers rumors that the High Caste possesses magic. Sid tempts Nirrim to seek that magic for herself. But to do that, Nirrim must surrender her old life. She must place her trust in this sly stranger who asks, above all, not to be trusted.
Set in the world of the New York Times–bestselling Winner’s Trilogy, beloved author Marie Rutkoski returns with an epic LGBTQ romantic fantasy about learning to free ourselves from the lies others tell us—and the lies we tell ourselves.

I made a lil glass 🌵while I finished this. I almost bailed. The world building seemed a bit… lazy… but the characters were pretty good, so I finished. Predicable ending though.

I don‘t love a lot of YA. Dystopian society, lower class girl uncovers the conspiracy that holds back her kind, discovers who she really is blah blah

thereadingpal Very cute glass 🌵!! 2y
5feet.of.fury @thereadingpal thanks! I‘m just learning but I really wanted to make one! 🌵❤️ 2y
bthegood glass work is cute - I had to take a break from the YA dystopian for a bit🙂 2y

I am learning how to do stained glass art but I get so childishly frustrated when I‘m not immediately good at something 😅

Anyway, I‘m a couple hours into this book, it‘s got some solid 🏳️‍🌈 rep but.. the story itself isn‘t thrilling me. And it is one of those examples of a white lady writing a dystopian universe based on things that already happened to Black or Brown people (in this case caste systems and human hair trafficking) 😬

Suet624 I understand the frustration. Why can't I be excellent immediately??? 2y
5feet.of.fury @Suet624 right? Why would I not have a natural talent for soldering?? 🤨😅 2y

I really enjoyed this. But maybe not so much that I'm ready for the next book. I think they got me with the beautiful cover art on these.

Nirrim has lived her whole life behind the wall. When she meets Sid she begins to want something more. She also sees the people around her for what they are, though that takes significantly longer.

What is a midnight lie? It‘s a small lie we tell to protect those we love from coming to harm...

I didn‘t expect to like this one so much! In a highly stratified society, Nirrim lives in the “Ward”-a place with no birds, no trees and a highly proscribed existence. She is coming to realize that she might have options; that people aren‘t always what they seem and that she may not have to accept “it is as it is” anymore. Add god-birds, a magical mystery, and a new love to equal a winner! #lbgtqia+

21/03/29 A breathtaking book. Would 100% read again. A story about two lovers on a mission to find the magic. A storys about lesbian love and the magic of the gods you are sure to enjoy. The characters have personality and keep you intrigued. This is a book I could not put down. would recommend for 13+ due to some gore and minor graphic things. Amazing read. The ending is painful. When Sid and Nirrim are forced apart and love stolen from them.

This was my Illumicrate read in December, I think the first in a trilogy. It is a LFBTQ+ fantasy. Set in a world where if eat certain food or where certain colours you have to pay tithe, so you have to follow the rules. Nirrim lives and tries to follow these rules but she meets Sid who tempts her to flaunt the rules, by saying magic is possible. I found it a fast flowing, interesting read and would definitely like to read the next book. #books

"Kissing him is better than dealing with his hurt if I don't. I am afraid of his hurt. It was so tiring to be afraid all the time."

This book is phenomenal. Not only does it have a beautifully described world, complex characters, and an LGBTQ relationship between the two protagonists, but it also shows how insidious and toxic abusive relationships are. Incredible! #catsoflitsy #littenkitten #roxas

Went for a walk this afternoon even though it's 95° here today. Whew! 😥 Despite the soupy heat it was beautiful. Lots of sunshine and birds, beautiful clouds in a crystal blue sky. And a great book by my side! 💕📚 Autumn is my favorite season hands down, but there is definitely something magical about summer. ☀️🌿

ItsAnotherJen I get up at 5:30 to walk to try to beat the heat. Somedays it works, others it doesn't and it's already hot! 4y

#66 of my year 🌹 I‘m listening to White Caps by Stonefox 🥰

Caffeinated_Reader Well that was an exciting book. Nirrim was a great solid and strong character who holds up until about the end lol then she makes a deal that shows even the pure of heart can turn ugly with greed and pride. I love the complexities and the surprising love story woven into the story. I love the mission of finding why magic and why a wall. It was quick paced and had just enough sexual tension and encounters to keep it interesting. 4y
Caffeinated_Reader The story of the Gods was very well done. Her dreams and visions were a give away. I knew she had magic I just didn‘t know she was half God! That was cool. Also sad how they treat those that are half God like, making them forget their powers...not cool man lol to say the least. I enjoyed reading this one for sure! 4y

Honestly, this is worth the read just for the ending. It was unexpected and so evil, I loved it! I was surprised to see a lot of reviews saying the main focus of the book was the relationship between Nirrim and Sid - instead I thought it was a coming of age story for Nirrim as she navigates a world that has been lying to her, an abusive caregiver and new love. Also, the cover is gorgeous. I can't wait for book 2! #yafantasy #themidnightlie

I started The Midnight Lie last night and I am not totally sure what is going on yet but enjoying it so far! I enjoyed the Winners trilogy so I have high hopes for this book.

These are my other books I checked out from the library on my TBR. Have you read any of these? What should I read next? I can't wait to get to all of them! 📚 #TheMidnightLie #YAfantasy #TBR

AvidReader25 I was a fan of Recursion! 5y

When I found out this was set in the world of The Winners Trilogy, I got really excited since The Winners Trilogy is one of my favorite series ever. However, this was disappointing to me. It was boring and I could not connect to the characters.

I love this cover, colorful, creative, beautiful. Unfortunately, the story I did not. It just fell flat for me and in the end was not actually interesting; Nirrim is a weak character, allowing herself to be played by everyone, believing any lie before her.

How are you doing? Despite the UK being on lockdown, we've been able to go out and enjoy the sunshine the past couple of days, which has been nice. I have a huge TBR pile to get through which is good, because every website seems to be overloaded at the moment. 😭

I'm going to be reeling over this book for quite some time. Set in the same world as The Winner's Curse, this book managed to shock me, expand the world and change the Winner's Curse for me forever. Absolutely incredible. I was not ready for that ending.

InBooksILive I didn‘t know this was set in the same world. I need to read the 2nd and 3rd books in the Winner‘s trilogy first before I read this then! I want to be in the loop and not miss any references if there is any lol 5y
Erinsuereads That cover is stunning 5y
Vee_Bookish @InBooksILive oh trust me, I'm pretty sure you'll need to finish the Winner's first but spoilers 👀 5y

March TBR! I have a few books to catch up on, a TBR to cut down on and a ton of library books to wade through but these are the March releases that I will be picking up and devouring!

Jess_Franzino I have “Haven Fall” coming in my BOTM package. It looks so cool! I hope it‘s good. 5y
Vee_Bookish @Jess_Franzino I pre ordered it purely because Bloomsbury give you a free gift if you do and fill in a form. It's a key and a door hanger! Hopefully I'm not too late. 5y
Jess_Franzino @Vee_Bookish I‘m getting mine through the YA BOTM subscription box. Not sure if that counts amongst Pre-orders. I do loooove some fancy keys, though, so will check it out. Thanks for the heads up 😃 5y
Vee_Bookish @Jess_Franzino UK Only I believe! No idea if there's a US incentive. 5y
