There was a lot of info here. Luckily, Goldberg writes in a very engaging, witty, and humorous way; other wise it would've read like a dry history text. The individual POVs from each side were interesting and enlightening and sometimes frustrating. Overall, a very worthy read.

This completed a second bingo for the month; yayyy!

"On the morning of the fine spring day, full of sunshine, that ended with my arrest in Gaza, I woke early from an uneven sleep, dressed, and pushed back to its proper place the desk meant to barricade the door of my hotel room."

Ok, a #BookSpinBingo book for another bingo that I actually have not read ?

My second Eisenhower quote. The man was underrated as a president.

Another depressing prison library story.

This one involved racially motivated censorship. Bullshit. Absolute bullshit. The prison removed several books including Frederick Douglass' memoire and The Souls of Black Folk. They even went as far as tearing the pages out of some books. I mean come on.

gradcat Sometimes I just want to sit down & cry at the way this country is headed...no, the way the world is headed. A simple question: Just what is WRONG with people? Why are they (and I know this quite the understatement) behaving so badly? 😢 5y
Suet624 @gradcat I‘m with you. 5y
Patchshank @gradcat in my opinion it all comes down to ignorance, greed, and power. The ignorant allow the greedy and powerful to suppress others. It makes them feel less suppressed. 5y

tpixie Appalling! Interesting I researched some - the Democratic Governor of Illinois appointed the Warden of the prison, & the City of Danville has Democratic leaders in Government. So this was all done by Democrats. Banning books should never be allowed anywhere! 📚♥️📚 @gradcat @Suet624 @Patchshank 5y
Chrissyreadit @tpixie I‘m a hard core progressive- and completely blame Clinton for the prison pipeline we face. As usual the most vulnerable and least resources are further targeted and punished. It breaks my heart when we do not have true Civically minded leaders in the Democratic Party. Also- thank you for researching -👏🙌 (edited) 5y
TrishB @gradcat agree! 5y
Chrissyreadit @gradcat @Suet624 @Patchshank I agree! Books and readers represent power and that scares people. Education and hope are vital resources that everyone must have access to. 5y
gradcat @tpixie Yes, I‘m with @Chrissyreadit ... good job on the research. I‘m a flaming socialist, I think, but really, more than that, I‘m just one of those liberal dinosaurs that still believes in humanism. But I am being sorely tested in my beliefs with things going on everywhere. China & Hong Kong, for example, are on the other side of the world, but I‘m so bothered about what‘s happening between humans right there on the street! Such violence! 5y
gradcat @Suet624 @Patchshank @TrishB @tpixie @Chrissyreadit I guess what I‘m saying is ... do your politics have to govern your behavior? I think a huge dose of empathy is in order. How much more do we want to take from prisoners? Isn‘t loss of freedom enough? But I‘ll get off of my soapbox now...sorry guys! I‘ve truly bent your ears today, I know! 5y
tpixie @gradcat @Chrissyreadit i totally agree with what you both said so well ! We really do need to get this as part of the prison reform that is going on! ( starting) as for China - well i think they are in a chemical warfare with us ( fentanyl) lol so don't get me started!! I'm trying to ' de- couple' myself from China the best i can! 5y
Chrissyreadit @gradcat unfortunately people are easily swayed to believe what they are told- I worry but then I see the changes that are coming too- and without discord the bad could continue unchallenged. I‘m definitely a humanist and believe we will be the change in the world. 5y
Chrissyreadit @tpixie @gradcat I think China will also have to face change in the long game. As far as politics governing behavior- oddly there are some correlations there. What is more distressing is the idea that there is an unspoken third party of greed that operates out of our two parties and keeps our choices limited and framed in a false narrative. 5y
gradcat @Chrissyreadit You hit the nail on the head with that “unspoken third party.” I could not agree more! 5y

https://reason.com/2019/11/22/west-virginia-inmates-will-be-charged-by-the-minut...
Charging by the minute? I find it disgusting. Private prisons should be illegal. They try to squeeze every cent out of prisoners they can. Why punish them for trying to broaden their minds? Prison libraries are lacking enough as it is. Ebooks should be utilized.

Freespirit That's sad..and greedy 5y
Texreader Horrible!! 5y
tpixie This is all so strange. So I wonder if apps are free ? They could download serial reader! Or have someone email photos of the book. Time consuming but a tricky way around it! 5y

megnews This is ridiculous!! 5y
Patchshank @tpixie I think they charge per minute to use the tablet in general. Which is bullshit in itself. But to charge for something as basic as reading is just completely uncalled for. 5y
Chrissyreadit @Freespirit @Texreader @tpixie @megnews @Patchshank I‘m surprised they even have access to tablets. WV is punishment heavy and many of the laws on our books do not allow people to ever escape the system. I work with very vulnerable people here- but they keep electing officials who openly cause them harm and contempt. This is why the free library I keep at my clinic is so important to me. I‘m constantly encouraging people to take books home. 5y
tpixie @Patchshank I totally agree!! I wonder why this trend started. If anything other than greed? We need to encourage rehabilitation. 5y
tpixie @Chrissyreadit keep up your great work!!! 5y
Chrissyreadit @tpixie thanks friend! 5y
