All Tomorrow's Parties
All Tomorrow's Parties | Rob Spillman
20 posts | 9 read | 14 to read
Rob Spillman--the award-winning, charismatic cofounding editor of the legendary Tin House magazine--has devoted his life to the rebellious pursuit of artistic authenticity. Born in Germany to two driven musicians, his childhood was spent among the West Berlin cognoscenti, in a city two hundred miles behind the Iron Curtain. There, the Berlin Wall stood as a stark reminder of the split between East and West, between suppressed dreams and freedom of expression. After an unsettled youth moving between divorced parents in disparate cities, Spillman would eventually find his way into the literary world of New York City, only to abandon it to return to Berlin just months after the Wall came down. Twenty-five and newly married, Spillman and his wife, the writer Elissa Schappell, moved to the anarchic streets of East Berlin in search of the bohemian lifestyle of their idols. But Spillman soon discovered he was chasing the one thing that had always eluded him: a place, or person, to call home. In his intimate, entertaining, and heartfelt memoir, Spillman narrates a colorful, music-filled coming-of-age portrait of an artists life that is also a cultural exploration of a shifting Berlin.

Last reminder (don‘t forget the gift swap too, if you want to participate)! I‘ve got a count of 10 for tomorrow and I can‘t wait to see each of you!

#ctlitsymeetup

ScientistSam Can't wait to see everyone! Quick question for the Yankee swap. I assume we wrap the books? 6y
KatieDid927 @ScientistSam That was my question too! And do we just bring one or can we bring a few if we have books we‘re willing to share? @CareBear 6y
See All 21 Comments
CareBear @KatieDid927 so the gift swap can be 1 or 2 wrapped gifts - I know a few of us are also bringing books we have that we‘re willing to share or trade or whatever. So you can do that as well, but no need to wrap those and they wouldn‘t be part of the Yankee swap! 6y
Crazeedi Have fun y'all!! Sounds like an awesome get together!😍 6y
Amiable I‘ll be there! Looking forward to it! Since I‘ve never been to a meetup before, how will I know which group is you guys? 😀 6y
j9brown Can't wait! 😁 6y
KatieDid927 @CareBear Coolio, thanks! 👍🏼 6y
CareBear @Amiable so the cafe is in the back of the bookstore and small - it‘ll be hard to miss us. If you‘re unsure I‘ll have the group name under “Carrie” or “Litsy” so you can ask a server to point us out. @ScientistSam and I will be there a little early just to make sure everything goes smoothly 6y
riversong153 I read it as clitsy lol and had to do a double take 😂😂😂 6y
CareBear @riversong153 🤣🤣🤣🤣 6y
umbrellagirl @riversong153 that would be a different sort of get together 😆 6y
Ncostell I‘ll be there, looking forward to it! 6y

kspenmoll The author coming coming May 23. The info is on East Granby Library website http://www.egpl.org/ 6y

So this book is 👍, but here‘s my quibble: the narrative switches between two timelines, which is fine but there‘s no way to tell when it switches. I thought the epigraph-&-theme-song convention might be the key—quote/song contemporary with whatever timeline you are in—but no. It‘s arbitrary, and the shifting is constant and confusing. 😕

Every chapter of this memoir has both an epigraph and a theme song. I can‘t decide if I love this or if it will get 🙄

House for our friend weekend in Rye, NH. Like the Real World but with married 35 year old nerds.

DivineDiana What fun! Enjoy! 8y
Reviewsbylola Sounds like a lot of fun! 8y
saresmoore 😂 Beautiful getaway space! I'm imagining strip Scrabble? Drinking games based on words appearing in your individual books? A Dr. Who marathon?? No, wait. I know. Settlers of Catan with shots for every sheep trade! 8y

Ericmanciniwriter @saresmoore yep - nailed it 😄 8y
MyNamesParadise Nice!! Are there spaces between the steps? Those have always terrified me! 8y
Ericmanciniwriter @MyNamesParadise yes, huge ones. Not a fan either 😩 8y
Ericmanciniwriter @saresmoore it's actually based on ore 8y
saresmoore Probably a wiser choice. Then you don't get drunk until near the end of the game. 8y
mauveandrosysky Oh I'm so jealous. Rye is one of my favorite places. 8y
Zelma Sounds even better than The Real World. And 😂😂😂👍 to Settlers of Catan drinking rules. @Eamann @saresmoore 8y
Ericmanciniwriter @mauveandrosysky it's funny we 'settled' for Rye when we couldn't find anything in Portsmouth but it was SO PERFECT 8y
mauveandrosysky Haha no one "settles" for Rye! ? 8y

Alright Littens, I'm giving you homework (even though I have no right to do so). Next time you read a good book, I want you to email the author and tell them. Especially if they're not super-famous. It's the simplest thing but I guarantee it will make their day. If you want, comment here and tell me who you wrote to!

Hollie That's an awesome idea! 8y
cariashley What an amazing idea!! 8y
ReadingEnvy But what if they don't write back? I'm looking at YOU, Catherynne Valente.... Sad. 😢 8y

Texreader Awesome idea! 8y
minkyb I like it. I have been tempted especially with playwrights but I have never followed through. 8y
Ericmanciniwriter @ReadingEnvy naming names! I'm sorry that happened to you - maybe it got buried. 8y
CrowCAH Ok. Next book I finish I will email the author how I liked/disliked their book. Great challenge! As a creative writer, with no published novels yet, I would appreciate fan mail too and respond back! 8y
mauveandrosysky Challenge accepted. 8y
ptkpepe98 @EAMann...I'm still reading One American Robin. I'll definitely let you know. Without spoiling for anyone, it's been a good read so far, but it's finals/start of a new term, so I get very little reading done as I prepare addenda, etc. When I read it, time escapes me, which is good and bad, right?🙃 8y
Suet624 I did that several years ago. Wrote to Ted Thompson after reading his book. I couldn't stop myself from taking the time to track him down. He wrote back thanking me and mentioned how much it meant to him and that my note had arrived at just the right time. So yes, I agree. It matters. I've sent a few others and have not received responses but I'm good with that. I know it's the right thing to do. 8y
Ericmanciniwriter @ptkpepe98 I'm honored that you'd make time in your busy schedule to read my book! Please don't fail any classes on my account😀 8y
Ericmanciniwriter @Suet624 great story! I think past a certain fame level writers may pay others to read their mail/email to protect from lawsuits - say if I sent a story idea to Stephen King and he wrote a similar sounding book. 8y
Ericmanciniwriter @CrowCAH where can we find your stuff? Online anywhere? 8y
CrowCAH @Eamann at this time I don't have anything out there. Thank you for asking and being interested in my work! 😊 I'm currently in the early stages of editing my pirate novel. 8y
ptkpepe98 @Eamann ... Not in danger of failing...I'm the professor! My work never ends! LOL 8y
Ericmanciniwriter @CrowCAH good luck with your editing - that's exciting! 8y
CrowCAH @Eamann thank! It's a challenging and daunting task, but it will be worth the reward ☺️ 8y
TheLudicReader Many years ago I wrote a letter to one of my favourite authors, Carolyn Slaughter, and she sent me back a three page reply. I recently wrote an email to ask an author a question about her book; she responded straight away and once, at bookclub, we live tweeted with the author of the book we read...so awesome. 8y
Ericmanciniwriter @TheLudicReader that's such a great story! 8y

Just wanted to prove that @saresmoore isn't the only Litten who can post an adorable dance class photo. She goes into class on her own now, and I was able to get started on Spillman's very good memoir.

I'm addicted to books set in or about Berlin so this memoir was perfect for me. Spillman's writing is fantastic & he alternates between his childhood in West Berlin & the US with less than typical parents & his return to Berlin when East Germany collapsed. It makes me wish I too could have partied at raves held in the subway under the abandoned wall! This is absolutely going on my top 5 for the year.

This was a terrific read especially if you're taste in music includes the Velvet Underground, Talking Heads, Smiths, New Order, etc. This is a man's life divided between growing up and adult years (back and forth chapters) mainly in Berlin (east and west), Baltimore, MD, and Aspen, CO. Each chapter begins with a quote from an artist/writer/musician and a song lyric. Quick read about an interesting life.

Day 2, Book 2 of #biblioweekend! Keeping pretty much on schedule I'd say-finished Carry On yesterday and started this last night. I was going to have a blueberry smoothie, but we made a bunch of our own tomato juice this week, so I figured a Bloody Mary was appropriate! 🍹📖

Did you know Rob Spillman once hurdled traffic cones down the middle of the Queensboro Bridge? Because Queens can be like the Bermuda Triangle and there are no rules.
