Poems: Just Give Me a Cool Drink of Water 'Fore I Diiie/Oh Pray My Wings Are Gonna Fit Me Well/And Still I Rise/Shaker, Why D | Maya Angelou
8 posts | 12 read | 5 to read
Tenderly, joyously, sometimes in sadness, sometimes in pain, Maya Angelou writes from the heart and celebrates life as only she has discovered it. In this moving volume of poetry, we hear the multi-faceted voice of one of the most powerful and vibrant writers of our time. "The wisdom, rue and humor of her storytelling are borne on a lilting rhythm completely her own, the product of a born writer's senses nourished on black church singing and preaching, soft mother talk and salty street talk, and on literature: James Weldon Johnson, Langston Hughes, Richard Wright, Shakespeare and Gorki." -- "The New York Times Book Review.""Black, bitter and beautiful, she speaks of our survival." -- James Baldwin.

"Men themselves have wondered
What they see in me.
They try so much
But they can't touch
My inner mystery.
When I try to show them
They say they still can't see.
I say,
It's in the arch of my back,
The sun of my smile,
The ride of my breasts,
The grace of my style.
I'm a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That's me."

Courageous and irreverent, Maya was such an amazing and impressive woman. Her son is as amazing as his mother. Great documentary.

I began 2018 with reading Maya Angelou‘s memoir, “I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings”. 🕊 So I wanted my first book of 2019 to also be a Maya Angelou book. I am a huge poetry reader (and writer) and Maya Angelou has long been one of my biggest inspirations! So I try to really savor every book of hers that I read, as I know she is no longer on Earth to create more. A wonderful book by a phenomenal woman. ❤️ #MayaAngelou #poetry

Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day! All of "I Have A Dream" is on YouTube, and it's an inspiration.

In his pièce de résistance, MLK says, "We refuse to believe that there are insufficient funds in the great vaults of opportunity of this nation." Notice his outlook. He refused to believe that he lacked the opportunity to act. Many disagreed with his cause, but he did not ask permission to move forward.

What opportunity will you take hold of today?

I absolutely love reading this! I've lost count as to how many times I've read this. Maya Angelou among other poets have influenced my writing and made my love of poetry that much stronger. If you haven't read this do yourself a favor and READ IT!!!
