4 years since this book was published and it‘s still being widely read. I was in a long queue waiting for this copy from the library. Subject matter makes it not an easy read. Kept thinking this could be our young Aussie Grace Tames story . Though a difficult read it‘s very enlightening. The author has come out and said it‘s written from personal experience. That‘s how it felt to me even before I knew this. Brave young woman.

LeeRHarry This book has definitely stayed with me. 9mo
Rissreads I picked up a copy of this for $2! Hopefully I‘ll get to it soon 9mo
Jeg Great feeling when a book you want to read pops up in an op shop or book sale or even in a little library. I don‘t usually remember books but this one is certainly staying with me so far. 9mo

When your nails match your book 💅🏻. This book was excellent. Rich, nuanced and dark. I needed to be in the right headspace given the subject matter.
I‘m really sorry to have to tell you all that men are the worst. Revelatory I know 🤣. But we keep on loving our biggest predator 🤷🏻‍♀️.
My only criticism is that it could‘ve done with an edit, particularly the last third. Such a good book though 👏👏👏👏.

LeeRHarry I thought this was an excellent read too - I thought about it for ages afterwards. 11mo

Yesterday‘s scores from my building‘s book exchange. As you can see the weather has been gorgeous. I spent some time at the beach after my yoga and ballet class. My partner finally took me out to dinner to celebrate my distinction in my Repertoire ballet exam. I had my favourite, zucchini flowers. Then came home for a bath, Shiraz and The Notebook movie.

SamAnne Beautiful view! 2y
LapReader It is @SamAnne I am very lucky to live here. I regularly get inundated with visitors because of it. This coming weekend is the Australian Supercars race. I live right on the track which is a blessing and a curse. You get free tickets but every man and his dog wants to watch it from my balcony. The first year we had 15 visitors. I refuse to cook for that many this year! I want to relax too. 2y

The depth and nuance the author used to articulate a subject that most (myself included) would like to think of as fairly black and white made this story way more compelling than I expected!

I feel like this is an important read.

And on a lighter note (if there is one) I always love books that reference so much other literature 📚🤓

#booksandbooze

Ruthiella Agree. I found this book difficult to read due to its subject matter but appreciate how it showed how abuse messes with a victim‘s perspective. 2y

It‘s gonna take me a while to articulate how I felt reading this book. Maybe I‘ll never be able to. All I can say is thank you to the author, for putting words to the unspeakable and facing vitriol in the face of her bravery.

And to all my fellow nymphettes: I see you. I love you. You are not alone.

Complex exploration of the abuse of power by a teacher & statutory rape that‘s too intense for me. Prose so vivid that it‘s disquieting. “Trigger warning,” is an overused phrase (feeling sad or angry is not getting triggered y‘all) but the tone & spot-on dialogue between the teacher & the teen are so realistic that survivors might want to skip this one. Narration is too good. A plot twist is coming, but I‘m bowing out. #statutoryrape #sexualabuse

I‘ve been reading A LOT. Lucy is my constant companion, and a very good girl. Finished tagged this morning and I had some feelings! Vanessa had a tears long relationship with her teacher that began when she was 15, now accusations about his behaviour are coming out. I really enjoyed this book and perhaps enjoyed is not the right word but it was a very good book. For me, I thought a lot about how we view victims in the aftermath of these things ⬇️

Reagan And if victims sometimes feel an obligation to come forward and the unfairness of that. The ending was very good, open ended but I thought it left things in a tidy-ish / satisfying spot. It‘s a very hard read but a worthwhile journey. 3y

This was an interesting read. Moments very difficult to listen to. But that I think is the point, difficult conversation and event for someone to go through. To see abuse from the side of the abused with a different mindset. So hard to hear and very sad. The longtime effects of abuse

Thank you @LapReader for this #nywd2022 rec! @monalyisha

Hard to review. This book is clearly incredible, important and beautifully written, but I also can‘t say I ‘enjoyed‘ reading it. I like dark books but… wow. Having said that, the ending which I won‘t spoil was simple and cathartic enough that I‘d say it made it worth it. Now time to go read something very light and frothy with absolutely no important themes.

monalyisha Oof! It sounds like you can be proud of yourself for having consumed “L”iterature…and that the author can be proud for having created something so crafted and of such substance. Now, something sweet! 📖✨🍬 3y

Incredibly disturbing, but realistic & believable. Reads like a memoir despite being fiction. Insightful & well-written. Highlights sexualization of females & the power of gaslighting in abusive relationships. The fact that this grooming & manipulation undoubtedly occurs for girls this age intensified the cringe factor & impact. Not for the lighthearted, but recommended. Tread lightly & be prepared, both to be disgusted & enlightened.

I was really enthralled by this book. Don't get me wrong, I was horrified by some of the scenes, but I thought it captured perfectly how damaging sexual abuse is, and the contortions Vanessa went through, to help her cope/ rationalise what had happened to her. I really couldn't put it down, and spent most of the day yesterday reading so I could finish it. It's hard to like Vanessa as a character, but I felt an enormous amount of sympathy for her.

When will you let this go?
I remember being questioned similarly and more than a decade later that still haunts me.
Why do we ask anyone that question? If anyone could choose to let something go that they didn't want to carry anymore, as if a bag of groceries, they would. Obviously it's not that simple.
This audio has an 1hr interview with the author but I'm not sure I want to listen. It could make the book better or worse. Should I listen?

Insightsintobooks I just bought this because it was on sale. I have a question though before I start it... I was 19 when I was first trafficked... my trafficker was considerably older than I was.... do you think I might be triggered by this book? 3y
Andrea4 @Insightsintobooks well I think the whole book is a TW for anyone with any kind of sexual assault experience. She is not trafficked but the premise is she was 15 with someone almost 3x her age. And it contains details of the grooming and of the assaults. 3y
Andrea4 @Insightsintobooks I guess it depends where you are at, mentally and emotionally. I'd say read it cautiously and if it begins to overwhelm, no one says you have to finish it right? 3y

Insightsintobooks @Andrea4 that is true. Thank you. 3y
Andrea4 @Insightsintobooks of course, any time! I understand wanting to know. I find the worst for me is when it's not expected in a book and I'm completely unprepared for it. 3y
Andrea4 @Insightsintobooks oh but *really* importantly for this novel, that situation is not the end of her story.♥️ 3y
Insightsintobooks @Andrea4 That is good to know. That the situation isn't the end. Thank you. 3y

This story moves in and out of years, in the beginning it's a very obvious shift but as the story moves it becomes less so (maybe an audio more than visual issue). The author does a good job in showing how survivors can easily slip back into memories. They can overtake. A lot of this book makes me want to jump back to the present moment, where something can happen/change. It feels like you're slowly drowning in the past. And that's perfect really.

Exactly half way. This book is like watching a fatal pile up of cars that is horrifying but you can't turn away from.
Previously I would've loathed 32yo, inert Vanessa but after much of my own work and hearing the stories of so many others, I feel a bit of kinship, mostly sadness, and like I'd like to lend her a strength to move beyond her self blame/hatred, to move her to DO something to help herself, and yes, others.

Just started this morning and already I feel this huge sadness and empathy for a woman-child who is essentially torn in two. You can see one side of her trying to cling to rationalizing while another part fights that. And while she presents her teacher in a rationalizing, sympathetic way, if you "read between the lines" you see how he saw her, how he targeted her, groomed her.

Unfortunately, this one didn‘t stand up to #reread. It was my favorite fiction of March 2020, but this time the length and repetition were extremely tedious, and now I‘ve read other books I enjoyed much more. (Tagged below) Bummer.

Also, I really hated the narrator of the #audiobook this time.

Megabooks This translation from French is fantastic! 3y

Megabooks @youneverarrived yeah, I was really surprised by my feelings this time, but tastes evolve, and because I‘m reading so much, there have been about 350-400 books since my last read, and I‘ve definitely read more fiction and nonfiction on this topic. Maybe that‘s why?? 3y

I really expected to hate this, not least because it‘s about the abuse of a teenage girl by her teacher, but it was so well written, so impeccably plotted, so painfully believable, that I was just really impressed by it in the end. That being said, my skin was CRAWLING the entire time.

What an uncomfortable read. I needed a whiskey while finishing it. I‘ve never encountered a novel that so perfectly captures the complex relationship and feelings between an abuser and the target of the abuse. Wow. I do agree with the criticism that it could have been shorter and wandered a bit. But I couldn‘t put it down.

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I‘m reading this one now… 🖤🤍 3y
marleed I came across a hardback copy of this book in an LFL last weekend and my hot little hand quickly reached in to call it mine. I‘ll likely wait until the end of summer to read it. But I have 2 other books pulled out for the LFL. That‘s my rule take 1 replace with two - goodness knows I have enough books to do that with ease! 3y
SamAnne @marleed I went thrifting last weekend and came home with a stack of books, when I already have several stacks of unread books.🙄. I‘ve been taking more to the used bookstore (for credit towards more books....). I justify them to my sweetie that we will need all those extra books for the shelves in the house we will be turning into an AirbnB. I plan to have a take and leave library in it. (edited) 3y

The fictional story of Vanessa, groomed by her teacher at 15, and the years-long relationship that follows, this is incredibly disturbing but also gripping. The nuances and complexities of Vanessa‘s story are fascinating. I listened to an interview where the author described how she wanted the reader to experience confusion as to whether Vanessa was ever empowered or in control, which is something you grapple with throughout.

This is a confronting read. I know this is a work of fiction but I found it interesting to take note of the language that predators use to manipulate and coerce their victims. This was ROUGH! Trigger warnings for sexual assualt/abuse, particularly teens abused by someone older.

This book does a great job at looking how power dynamics play into sexual abuse, but man is it ever a tough go. A necessary topic, but it was uncomfortable to the point that I almost quit reading at least 5 times - and I don't shy away from tough subjects. In the end I am glad I continued though. This made me squirm but also think.

Schlinkles I felt the exact same way. It was a tough one to get through, but beautifully written and really worth it. 4y

💛💛💛💛💛 Very dark and disturbing, but equally unputdownable. The book confronts the uncomfortable subject of a teenager and teacher having a relationship, whereby the manipulation of vanessa both as a child and into her adult years can be quite difficult to read.
