I loved every single page of this marvelous book. Reminiscent of some of the best CanLit, I couldn't help but think of Margaret Laurence and Ann-Marie MacDonald while reading.

One November day in 1967, two women disappear from a small community in BC. The book that follows is about the lives lived in the wake of that disappearance. It is beautiful and melancholy, with just enough glimpses of beauty and joy to maintain balance.

TheKidUpstairs This will no doubt find its place on my best reads of 2025 lists, just as Higdon's second book was one of my favourites of 2024! (Tagged) Can't wait to see what she does next! 4mo

This was one of my reading spots for the past week. We were at a cabin in Ontario's Near North, with essentially no internet or phone connections to the outside world. I spent a lot of time on the lake, and a lot of time reading on rocks. 6 books down for the week, all great reads, tagged was one of the best. Reviews to come!

This little novel in verse tells a big story. What a love story to communication, caring adults, friends, nature, and poetry.

I will read anything Ann Clare LeZotte writes; this one is a modern story. Her Martha's Vineyard trilogy left me feeling so educated as a reader. I'm not obtuse to what it's like for deaf children to be born to hearing parents who don't desire to learn sign language. This book, written in verse gave me Matilda vibes (minus the magic).

Dusti Bowling‘s books tend to tackle some tough topics and this one is no exception. Avalyn deals with life threatening asthma and allergies while also trying to get to know Adam, a new student in her class (TW in comments) who somehow seems connected to the dust storms. Avalyn loves words and is studying for the spelling bee. Each chapter includes interesting and relevant words she practices.

Daisey TW: Although it‘s never stated explicitly, Avalyn realizes Adam is being sexually abused by his uncle that he now lives with after the death of other family members. Additionally, there is quite a lot of bullying. (edited) 1y
