Pride, Prejudice and Poison
Pride, Prejudice and Poison: A Jane Austen Society Mystery | Elizabeth Blake
7 posts | 7 read | 1 reading | 9 to read
Perfect for fans of Laura Levine and Stephanie Barron, Elizabeth Blake's Jane Austen Society mystery debut is a mirthfully morbid merger of manners and murder. In this Austen-tatious debut, antiquarian bookstore proprietor Erin Coleridge uses her sense and sensibility to deduce who killed the president of the local Jane Austen Society. Erin Coleridge's used bookstore in Kirkbymoorside, North Yorkshire, England is a meeting place for the villagers and, in particular, for the local Jane Austen Society. At the Society's monthly meeting, matters come to a head between the old guard and its young turks. After the meeting breaks for tea, persuasion gives way to murder--with extreme prejudice--when president Sylvia Pemberthy falls dead to the floor. Poisoned? Presumably...but by whom? And was Sylvia the only target? Handsome--but shy--Detective Inspector Peter Hadley and charismatic Sergeant Rashid Jarral arrive at the scene. The long suspect list includes Sylvia's lover Kurt Becker and his tightly wound wife Suzanne. Or, perhaps, the killer was Sylvia's own cuckolded husband, Jerome. Among the many Society members who may have had her in their sights is dashing Jonathan Alder, who was heard having a royal battle of words with the late president the night before. Then, when Jonathan Alder narrowly avoids becoming the next victim, Farnsworth (the town's "cat lady") persuades a seriously time-crunched Erin to help DI Hadley. But the killer is more devious than anyone imagines.

Erin Coleridge owns a bookstore in Yorkshire & is a member of a local Jane Austen Society. The society is in turmoil - member infighting and power struggles - and the murder of the president! Was her death related to the society, her prickly personality, or something she knows about one of the many villagers hiding secrets? Erin‘s avid interest in crime leads her to investigate, to the consternation of the police.

mabell On a positive note, these pumpkin cupcakes were yummy! The book - Not my favorite. The physical descriptions began to get on my nerves, and certain themes were so emphasized that they negatively affected the flow of the narrative, such as multiple examples of atheism (just odd) and, for the MC, almost every situation, scent, or sight brought to mind her father or the loss of her mother. ⬇️ 2y
mabell I‘m probably being overly critical, and I‘m sure it was just the cumulative effect of once you notice, you can‘t un-notice. But I‘m not too interested in reading on. 2y
Librarybelle At least the pumpkin cupcakes were good! 2y

Enjoyable Cozy Mystery featuring members of Jane Austen Society in Yorkshire. Particularly loved all the cats named after Austen Characters.

I listened on audio. Excellent Narrator but it just dragged on a bit to long. If I had been reading the Print or Kindle copy I could have read faster.

Definitely going to read next in Series. Want to see how romance between DI Hadley and Bookstore owner Erin progresses.

You know my love for cozy mysteries, so of course I recently purchased this Jane Austen themed-ish first in the series (yet to read, though). Set in a village of Northern Yorkshire, the local Jane Austen Society try to find the murderer when one of their own is found dead. Sounds like one I will enjoy, for sure! #Country #200PnPCovers

JuliaTheBookNerd Oooo I haven‘t heard of this series, I love all things Jane Austen. I will definitely have to check this out 😊 3y

My Hot & Sour Soup made & posted on the blog yesterday but didn't finish this NetGalley #ARC until after #24in48 ended so I'm posting both today. Recipe link👇🏻

1st in a new #cozy series with a book seller who is a member of the Jane Austen Society in a small Scottish town. Erin is likable & smart & I enjoyed her & potential ❤️'Darcy'-Inspector Hadley & Farnsworth, Erin's friend & cat lady who names her cats after Austen characters. Good fun.

DebinHawaii Link to my adaptation of Mark Bittman's really yummy 😋 hot & sour soup recipe: http://kahakaikitchen.blogspot.com/2019/07/hot-and-sour-soup-for-souper-soup-sal... 5y
