I finished another chapter of THE PHOENIX GUARDS while I ate dumplings & braised chard. It felt appropriate to have spicy food while I read about a conflict over a hot pepper field.

I‘m about 130 pages from the end now, and while I doubt I‘ll finish the book tonight, I should manage to do it tomorrow. It‘s so much fun. You can tell Brust finds this all hilarious, but it‘s super serious to the characters and to the narrator. That‘s a nice balance.

Singout A conflict over a hot pepper field definitely sounds intriguing... 4y

Brust channels the hell out of Dumas with THE PHOENIX GUARDS. It‘s packed full of verbose irony and bits like this, where the narrator tells us he‘ll be brief before he proceeds to take way more than two words to get his point across. It‘s delightful, but it‘s also loooooooong, so I‘ve been pausing every 200 pages to read something else before I pop back in again.

I‘m glad THE PHOENIX GUARDS is on Scribd so I don‘t have to spend ages tracking down a used copy, but I‘m bummed it doesn‘t have its proper cover. How am I supposed to stage photos to go with my progress updates?

I‘m also glad I had the ingredients for hot chocolate on hand, but I‘m bummed it‘s cold enough to warrant it today. I woke up to 5°, and it‘s only climbed to 11. Autumn is shit. Please don‘t comment to tell me how much you love it.

Sace This post makes me laugh. I'm not a fan of summer and I do prefer fall, but this is hilarious! "I hate autumn. Come at me, bro." ? 4y
xicanti @Sace I‘ve found that a huge number of people on the internet read, “I hate the cold” as, “I invite you to tell me how much you love it.” To be honest, I find it REALLY upsetting, like when someone gushes about a person who‘s only ever been horribly cruel to you, so I try to be clear that I have NOT issued that invitation. 4y

Bklover Your cocoa looks quite yummy and completely distracts one from the lack of book cover! Lovely! 4y
xicanti @QuietlyLaura @Bklover it was so good. I added a little generic Irish Cream. 4y
Lreads I need to find a way to make nondairy hot chocolate, maybe with almond milk. 4y
xicanti @QuietlyLaura I‘m sure almond milk would be delicious! It‘s made with water in Mexico, too, so perhaps you could find a good Mexican recipe. 4y
Lreads Thanks for the info! I‘m perfectly fine with water. 4y

Pickpick

Paarfi of Roundwood is my favorite narrator hands down. This is the beginning of a pretty epic series and I really recommend it. Brust has a really clever way of writing. if you like the 3 musketeers, you'll enjoy this.
