Dear Girls
Dear Girls: Intimate Tales, Untold Secrets, and Advice for Living Your Best Life | Ali Wong
Ali Wong's heartfelt and hilarious letters to her daughters (the two she put to work while they were still in utero) cover everything they need to know in life, like the unpleasant details of dating, how to be a working mom in a male-dominated profession, and how she trapped their dad. In her hit Netflix comedy special Baby Cobra, an eight-month pregnant Ali Wong resonated so strongly that she even became a popular Halloween costume. Wong told the world her remarkably unfiltered thoughts on marriage, sex, Asian culture, working women, and why you never see new mom comics on stage but you sure see plenty of new dads. The sharp insights and humor are even more personal in this completely original collection. She shares the wisdom she's learned from a life in comedy and reveals stories from her life off stage, including the brutal single life in New York (i.e. the inevitable confrontation with erectile dysfunction), reconnecting with her roots (and drinking snake blood) in Vietnam, tales of being a wild child growing up in San Francisco, and parenting war stories. Though addressed to her daughters, Ali Wong's letters are absurdly funny, surprisingly moving, and enlightening (and gross) for all.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ Wanted a funny #reread while wrapping presents earlier this month. Here‘s my OG review: A letter to her girls, but, as she states early on, probably not until they‘re like 21 years old. Yes, it‘s funny and brash as expected, but what I really enjoyed were the stories about growing up with her parents; a Vietnamese mom and Chinese dad. We can all benefit from hearing about different cultures. ⬇️

britt_brooke I could‘ve done without the epilogue by her husband. It felt like a weird justification of how he gave up his career to support hers. No one thinks your‘re less of a man, bro. It‘s pretty badass. (edited) 12mo
vivastory I haven't read this but I'm really curious to watch the new series she's in with Steven Yeun “Beef.“ I've heard great things. I hope that your holidays were great, 🌲 12mo
Bookzombie I also enjoyed this one and could have done without the epilogue. Now that they have split up it seems even less important. 12mo
britt_brooke @Bookzombie Shows how much I know! I didn‘t know they split. Dang. 12mo
britt_brooke @vivastory She‘s pretty damn funny! 12mo

Scores from the Dubbo book swap. As usual I took more than I replaced because I have book addiction issues. I went home to the country for my favourite cousin‘s 21st birthday. It was a Wild West theme we got ready at my sister‘s town house and also slept there that night. A booze bus was hired to ferry us between both locations. I‘m heading back home now and excited to read the magazines on the way. They usually help the trip to go faster.

I didn't know what to expect going into this, but I knew it was going to be funny because I was familiar with Ali Wong's stand up. I didn't realize so much of it was focused on motherhood, but I loved hearing about her stories from her childhood as well as the expectations vs. the reality of motherhood. Lots of crass LOL moments. I will be gifting this to a couple of soon to be moms in my life who I think will appreciate the hilarious advice 😂

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Forgot I put this one on hold, but it was great company while working in the yard this afternoon. It‘s a memoir in the form of letters to her two young daughters. If you like her comedy, and celebrity memoirs, it‘s worth picking up. The epilogue from her husband was a little weird, like “I‘m your parent, too!” I just saw that they split up, which is sad and makes me see some of what she wrote in a bit different light. Still good though!

54/150 I didnt think this book would be for me, since I'm neither female, Asian nor have kids, but I found it hysterically funny. Wong is brutally funny, blunt and to the point, not shy to own up to her own faults as much as she points them out in others. I've never seen her stand up, but now I need to go find one of her shows online. TW: she talks a lot about sex and her sexual parts.

I just discovered Ali‘s comedy last weekend and I knew I had to listen to this book. It is a memoir written as a letter to her daughters. If you like her comedy you will enjoy the book.

Quick, funny read. I like her stand ups better than i liked this book… but it was good. I enjoy hearing abt her experiences, not only in comedy but also in the world: being Asian, having kids, interacting with her relatives. Better than so-so.

AileenRR Agree, I liked her stand up specials more than the book 3y
Nalbuque @AileenRR I need to rewatch them, but I remember a lot of laughs! I also liked her movie Be My Maybe! The book felt a bit… I dno, I like the “memoir” part but the humor in it wasn‘t that funny to me. 3y

I thought this was super funny and honest. I really enjoyed this book. This touched on a lot of subjects including race and being a woman. I love how honest and real this book was. She wrote about her life and experience without worrying about judgment or what anyone would think of her. Loved this book and love her!!

I think Ali Wong so I liked this book. She had some interesting points on traveling abroad in college (which I never got the chance to do). How people view successful women & other interesting topics. If you can handle some of her colorful descriptions & familiar with her stand up then you‘d be up to reading this book. This gives me my second bingo, yeah! #bookspinbingo

I know it's a memoir.... But this seemed to be all about Ali Wong on the road, rolling her eyes at guys who think they're funnier than her. I mean, yeah, I'm on board, but you can tell she's still ticked about it and that seems to give those losers too much rent-free space in her head.

jdiehr I bailed on this one, too. I found it very off-putting. 4y

My last book which I finished just at 11pm last night was -The Flight Attendant - which was in between a Pick and So-So for me.
📚📖❤️

First read of 2021 is the tagged book and already hooked and only on the first part. However, crass humour is right up my alley!

#TBRChallenge #AudioBook #ABookThats

Ali Wong was at her brash, bawdy, and unapologetic finest in this book. I love her comedy and was excited to learn more about the woman off the stage - I was not disappointed! I loved the openness she offered about her experiences, the hilarity of her anecdotes and just the all around honesty.

I'm not big into memoirs and the like, but this one was excellent.

Continued ⬇️

TCLinrow One last thing, I've read a few reviews that didn't like the final chapter where her husband Justin offers his perspective, but I found it refreshing and interesting to see the story from his side. To me it was less of a justification as to why he chose to support her career over his own, and more about trying to address the stigma that exists around men supporting powerful women... and that is something that definitely needs addressing more. 4y

Absolutely one of the funniest things I‘ve ever read, I was laughing out loud while my boyfriend was trying to watch TV. Ali Wong is so honest, raunchy, open, and then insightful when you least expect it. Sometimes I was taken by surprise by how much I‘d learnt, about finding the best Vietnamese restaurants or even coping after a miscarriage, in and among some of the funniest writing I‘ve ever read.

Ali Wong is hilarious. Her jokes are raunchy, sometimes immature and everything I love laughing at.

This book is a letter to her daughters. It‘s about her childhood, the struggles and her reflections. She talks about surviving the stand up comedy lifestyle and trapping their father. She does this with honesty and hilarious insights.

I was so pleasantly surprised by this book. Wong wrote a lot about being a mother (obviously, this was written to her daughters) and pregnancy and birth, but also so much about being a broke young adult, living in different countries, eating good food, working as an artist. She is so funny, but also has profound- yet realistic- advice. I loved loved loved reading this.

I know I‘m going to give this another chance later, just not audio and I can pretty much bank on the fact that my original thought of this being great will still be there because even at 40% into it, I knew it was good.

It had some great stories, antidotes but better than that, some pretty solid advice so I definitely recommend this one to anyone that that has no problem with a non filtered adult humor.

Ali Wong didn't disappoint. My month of college entrance pressure and academic problems was made somewhat enjoyable just because of this highly hilarious and crazily informative book. This is a fantastic guide to finding one's inner adventurer, locating a nice Asian restaurant and landing a great guy while simultaneously being gross and not giving two flying fucks about it because it is all default to becoming a human.

Finished this #audiobook at the beach. I was somewhat underwhelmed by this 😔 The pros: Ali narrated the audio, she is super open, seems like a wonderful mother, her tales of her Asian-American family, and her relationship with her husband is sweet, as is he. The downside: I didn't laugh as much as I normally do with these types of #essays and I'm not sure why. I find Ali hysterical but some of the content just fell flat for me.

I instantly fell in love with Ali Wong in Baby Cobra. I like her even more after finishing her familiar yet fresh collection of letters to her daughters. Dear Girls is an exploration of all things human, but some of my favorite moments were the ones she speaks about her husband, family and motherhood. Wong never shies away from the gross. Boy does she dive right into the poo-poo of mommydom. https://onthebl.org/2020/07/25/dear-girls-by-ali-wong/

Finished this a couple of days ago and I kind of liked it but also kind of only thought it was okay. Wong is definitely funny, and the book had sweet moments but her comedy is kind of crass, which I‘m less keen on. It makes me feel like such a prude but I am who I am. The idea of handing down life advice is nice though, I liked her take on it, giving stories of their family‘s history too.

It was not my thing at all, the funniest part was the dedication. Enjoyed the afterward, which is sad to say about a book. Maybe because I don‘t know her act or work or who she is, it wasn‘t funny or entertaining. It is a fast read for sure.

Book club choice. So far not funny, gross and just plain rude. If it was funny I could forgive a lot, but so far, not even a giggle. I‘m bummed I spent money on this.

Been moving house & drawing out a particular 500+ page novel. But in the meantime, I did finish Ali Wong's book. Framed as a series of missives to her 2 young daughters, Wong puts forth the case for being unapologetically yourself, giving your all to what you love, grabbing hold of what the world has to offer, & not settling for anything less than the best in all areas of life. And, of course, it's funny.
