The cadence and depth of this book were absolutely gripping. It delved into some uncomfortable, even ugly truths that made me cringe at times, yet it was impossible to look away. The rawness of the narrative only made its impact stronger, leaving me with a lingering sense of reflection. It's a powerful read, one that doesn't shy away from difficult realities, and it sticks with you long after you turn the last page.

Taddeo‘s book is a memoir of 3 women who are experiencing a personal crisis. It‘s heart breaking. It spoke to me, as a women, about all the unspoken messages we are given about our lives, our wants, how we should behave, etc. read it!
Warning though- very adult subject matter

Loved this one far more than I initially thought I would.
Although it is non-fiction, this book is incredibly well written and engrossing. It is striking how thoroughly and honestly women's complex emotions are illustrated through the stories of just three women. In a way, this novel can be enlightening both for men and women regarding the state of womanhood and sex in the American society and not only.

This book was infuriating to read. Don‘t get me wrong, I liked it. But the content had me fuming. Especially Maggie‘s story. I don‘t know, THE PAIN that was inflicted on these women by the men was something I felt so deeply while reading this. “Women‘s desires” is an interesting choice to describe the book. It read more like “suffering at the hands of men” but ok. Lots more I can say about it!

Uncomfortable. Rattled. Ick. Some of my responses to this vivid, non-fiction read. A friend found this copy in a Bali holiday house. She picked it up & couldn‘t put it down. She messaged us from her tropical paradise, imploring us to read it. So I did. It interests me that the two books referred to in these true stories are Twilight & 50 Shades 🤢. I felt a bit like I was reading true versions of these. Sex scenes abound. Men are gross. The end.

It‘s hard being a woman. Even the reviews for this book show that. We‘re rightfully mad when movies don‘t pass the Bechdel Test, but we take for granted that our culture rarely passes it because as women, we are viewed as a provider - to our kids, to men, to our aging parents. If we dare exist in the world outside of these norms, we are shamed, even if we are not the driving force that pushed us outside those norms in first place.

It has been on my TBR since so long, but I never knew this to be a non-fic. The writer follows the events (special focus on sex life) and life of three women namely Sloane, Maggie and Lina.
I expected so much more, considering the fact the author did 8yrs research for it. Also, I expected the book to be more feminist, but contradictory to the title their lives are majorly controlled by the men in their lives. An average read, sadly.

This was incredibly good writing.
I liked this book, although I‘m aware it may not be for everyone.

I think this is a love or hate type of book and I LOVED it! First five star read of the year. The audio was amazing 🙌 the amount of time the author spent with these women shows - you get brutal honesty, desire and insight.

From the Book Swap a while back on the way home from ballet. I started the tagged book on audio but much prefer a hard copy. I‘ll use the old text book at work. My school can‘t afford new books so we usually buy 2nd hand from other schools. My nephew has an Aboriginal culture teacher at his preschool that he worships so I‘m trying to foster his interest in it especially as he will probably grow up to be a farmer and will need to care for country.

I‘ve had this one on my TBR for a while so I thought I would read it! I really enjoyed it. I don‘t normally read nonfiction but it really interested me. I definitely plan on reading other books by Lisa Taddeo after reading this one!

Three Women provides an honest look at the sex lives of three American women. While it was interesting at times, I was ultimately disappointed and frustrated with it for several reasons. I expected it to dig deeper, make conclusions (or at least provide some analysis), and feature stories that haven‘t been told before. These women share a lot of similarities and are all manipulated (if not abused) by men. It is more about trauma than desire. ⬇️

The hours invested in thorough research and deep conversations and the observations that come out of both are evident in Taddeo's well-written book that reads like fiction with it's lyrical prose. The book tells the stories of three different women and describes the longings, frustrations, and insecurities that propel them. It is incredibly honest as it tells their stories without holding back and without casting judgment.

The author spent years getting to know three women, and their sexual experiences and desires, and then put it into what can really only be described as a novelization. I read a review in which a woman said that she didn't like that the author didn't draw any conclusions but I think that's what I liked most about it; I was free to draw my own conclusions about how their experiences shaped their needs and desires. *sexually explicit content*

I‘m rereading nearly two years since my first read, this time for book club, and while I may be more aware this time about the limits of this book—the three women are all white, in opposite-sex partnerships, and American—I still found myself engrossed in the narrative force of these women‘s lives—at times, they read like fiction, the sex and love and betrayal, but always with the underlying and even unsettling resonance of recognition.

Journalist Taddeo immersed herself in the lives of three American women to research and write the fascinating, complex stories of their desire.

Almost gave upon this book and wish I had but I saw the comment on the front by Leigh Sales so I kept reading. Not sure what the whole point was. I mostly felt sorry for Maggie and all young women out there who have experienced what she did.

It‘s hard. I like this. It was a quicker read than the length had me expect. But it‘s not something I‘d say you have to go pick up. I get the hype. It‘s good, maybe just not my style. Probably something older (straight, white) women can appreciate.
This is my 36th read of 2020. I have officially hit my goal almost a full month early. Say good job jess

Oh dear. The metaphors provoked guffaws. If you‘re into voyeuristic text however this may be for you. Wish I had those hours back.

Enjoying some quiet reading time at the park today. I checked this book out on a whim (honestly because it fulfills North Dakota for my states reading challenge) and didn‘t anticipate liking it, but I‘m completely hooked.

This book is shocking, heartfelt, sexual, fraught—- the state of American sex and womanhood through the lives of three stories. The audio is great, and definitely NSFW so make sure you‘ve got headphones around sensitive ears. Recommended!!

Starting this audiobook today. Nonfiction about the lives of three women— ins and outs. Really interesting so far!

I‘m glad the author‘s note came at the outset; it‘s crucial to realise that this is non fiction although it reads like a novel. It‘s gripping, gossipy, raw and very often uncomfortable reading. The author spent thousands of hours with the three women and this is their account of their desires and invisibility. “In the end it is these three women who are in charge of their narratives. There are many sides to all stories, but this is theirs.”

Women shouldn't judge each others lives, if we haven't been through one another's fires.

“What would happen if one woman told the truth about her life? The world would split open”. This is how the book ends with a beautiful quotation by Muriel Rukeyser. If you want to find out the truth about how three women feel about their experiences than read this book

Reading #threewomen for an online book club. I'm not usually into book clubs but this book got my attention. So here we are. Also I have help.

I last posted four months ago, and in that time I‘ve started 24 books, 22 of which I finished and 2 of which I abandoned. I am going to make four posts to review all 24, and this book stands apart. I need to make special mention of this book; it‘s not the typical type of book I gravitate towards, but it was wonderful and interesting to read.

This nonfic book explores women‘s sexuality, and I highly recommend to women, and also to men. Plz read!!

Starting this one today

This was almost a pan for me, but I feel like there are women, and men, who could probably learn a lot from this book. Personally, I didn't understand how this book could be marketed as a book about a woman's desire when the whole book is about women striving to please men.

I do appreciate what the author was trying to do here, but I feel it missed the mark. The stories of these women, to me, were just heartbreaking.

This book weaved a much more complicated story of three women than I anticipated. The author does a good job of stating upfront what each woman desires. It grabs the your attention and gives the author the ability to piece together a story that is much less sexy and much more heartbreaking and compelling. I'm left with a range of emotions and thoughts that are thought provoking and unsettling about how men and women both desire and interpret sex.

I can‘t help but thinking, was the best theme to focus on a woman‘s “desire” in men? We are defined by more than our relationship with men. For this reason I can‘t get through this book no matter how hard I‘ve tried. Perhaps other‘s have found a strength in reading this that I‘m just struggling to see?
