There was a story within a story and unfortunately that smaller story lost me… too many people dragging around a plot that lost my interest. I‘ve hear good things tho and I think it might be worth another try later on, but for rn it‘s going in my list as a DNF.
Ok, started strong with some big horror elements, but did not expect where we ended up. 3.5 ⭐️ , wish it would‘ve stayed more zombie woman raised from the dead and actually discussed more about The Fisherman. I can see LOTS of cool stories within this story. I hope John writes more. Also this BEGS to be a film adaptation.
There is a whole lot packed into this relatively short book, including a whole other story within the story. Really well-written and creepy as hell in places, but still somehow just a guy telling some fishing stories. Brilliant.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
THE FISHERMAN by John Langan
Abe takes up fishing after his wife passes. When his co-worker, Dan, suffers great tragedy, they begin fishing together.
One morning over breakfast in a diner, Abe and Dan are told a strange and incredible story (a book within the book) about the little-known creek they plan to fish that day.
This tale is an absolute Lovecraftian nightmare. The worldbuilding is so wonderfully crafted. It‘s beautifully disturbing🎣💀
I'm listening to this as an audiobook, and the narrator (Danny Campbell) has a voice perfect for the story. I love when that happens 😊
Just getting started and it‘s a tiny bit of a slog but it might be one of those books that describes every detail up front so that when stuff starts happening it‘s super dramatic. I‘ll let y‘all know
I beat last year by 7 books! My most common genres from this year seem to be horror, thriller, and non-fiction. The tagged book was one of my favorites.
Excited to get started on reading for 2021!
It's a real wobbly pick, but I have decided to be charitable. Just.
What's more "literary" than a dead wife? How about 5 of 'em?
I just reached the long ago teased reason for Rainer getting run out of his university and it's Pretty Silly: a colleague of his TURNS TO DUST in the middle of a lecture he's giving. It's supposed to be creepy, but whoops I'm laughin'
Between some stuff coming in at my local bookstore and my Night Worms package coming in it has been a very bookful Friday!
Absolutely incredible. The universal definition of grief and loss is heavy here. Langan's imagery is beyond description. This story will sit with me forever. I'll never look into the water the same way ever again.
This book was just so damn...satisfying! It‘s the best of both worlds - a horror novel that‘s also literary. The way Langan writes made me feel like I was curled up next to a cozy fire in a cabin, while someone told me a truly devastating, horrific and unbelievable story about the vast emptiness that grief left in two men. It was terrifying, and I loved it. I‘ll be reading more by Langan!
Thank you SO MUCH @Callemarie for this awesome #allhallowsreadswap package! I love everything and I‘m so excited about the books... the two from my wishlist and the Joe Hill! You are incredible. Happy Halloween! 🎃🎃🎃
Every year for the past 10 years I give my daughter scary books for Halloween, this is one of this years picks #AllHallowsRead #GiveAScaryBook
I can‘t wait to read it when she‘s done.
Well I enjoyed this book. Took me a long time to read it kinda like a slow burn.
There's no Tada moment but definitely creepy.

@thereadingowlvina this book is on its way to you also the other book is for you 🙏
@BookishTrish @LiterRohde @TheReadingMermaid
Richard Kadrey suggested this book awhile ago and he couldn‘t have been more right about how utterly beautiful and moving Langan‘s story of a protagonist who lost his wife is forced to come to terms with that loss due to some very nasty occurrences. Quite a great contemporary gothic style horror story with plenty of heart and some of the best imagery I‘ve seen in a climax of a novel.
@LiterRohde Your pick is on it‘s way to UK @kaysworld1 It should arrive by Christmas. #TeamHellboundHeart
This was @LiterRohde pick for #TeamHellboundheart and it did not disappoint. I preferred reading about Dan and Abe to the middle section - which dragged a tad too long - but I‘d certainly read more by Langan.
This book takes its sweet time setting up Abe and Dan, two men grappling with grief, before things get dark and weird.
This was a 3 out of 5 for me. I never shook the feeling that there was something pacing- or plot-wise that I needed and wasn‘t getting, but it was still a solid horror novel.
For the record I am down for more by Langan. The more fantastical elements were great and I‘d love him to go full-on fantasy.
Decent audio narration.
#riotgrams #day15 - Books More People Need to Read
If the disparity between the small publisher and the big-name blurb provider is any indication, Langan seems destined to be one of those genre authors more respected than renowned. Which is a shame, given that this story can easily be stacked up against the likes of classic King (an unavoidable comparison). At it's core, it's a story about the horror inherent to the telling of stories themselves.
#riotgrams #day1 - #currentread
Couldn't think of a better way to kick off #october than with this recently procured horror novel. First chapter makes it seem much more intimate than I was expecting, though I'm anticipating things take a turn at some point.
This some serious #darkfolklore #darkfiction! Excellent atmospheric read for those who like to explore new worlds within worlds.
I really really enjoyed this book. The telling is similar to his first book, "House of Windows", but it's far more gripping. It's a story and it's told brilliantly, like a story should be. You can imagine sitting in a booth in a dark bar and listening to an old man spin his tale. I'm a sucker for all things Lovecraftian and this is full of it. Spooky, dark and very enjoyable.
Sometimes I get an audiobook to share with my husband when we are going to be in a car for an extended period of time. I try to find something he will like, he did like this a bit more than I did.
Fishing is life! Literally! Surprising commonalities between a mythic horror novel and a bleak dystopia. Read on!

How about this? I've been listening to The Fisherman on audiobook and I just started Audrey's Door yesterday for a buddy read only to realize the authors have the same last name. Mind. Blown.
