From the critically acclaimed author of Aminas Voice comes a new story inspired by Louisa May Alcotts beloved classic, Little Women, featuring four sisters from a modern American Muslim family living in Georgia. When Jameela Mirza is picked to be feature editor of her middle school newspaper, shes one step closer to being an award-winning journalist like her late grandfather. The problem is her editor-in-chief keeps shooting down her article ideas. Jameelas assigned to write about the new boy in school, who has a cool British accent but doesnt share much, and wonders how shell make his story gripping enough to enter into a national media contest. Jameela, along with her three sisters, is devastated when their father needs to take a job overseas, away from their cozy Georgia home for six months. Missing him makes Jameela determined to write an epic articleone to make her dad extra proud. But when her younger sister gets seriously ill, Jameelas world turns upside down. And as her hunger for fame looks like it might cost her a blossoming friendship, Jameela questions what matters most, and whether shes cut out to be a journalist at all...

These two books are both retellings of Little Women! In So Many Beginnings the family lives in the freepeople's colony of Roanoke Island during the American Civil War. In More to the Story the family is a modern Muslim family in Atlanta Georgia. I thought they both held true to the original characters, but I liked the second better- it hooked me in faster.

Karisimo I enjoyed what Beginnings had to say about the freepeople colony, but it was maybe too much to combine with a re-telling? 1y

This is the second Little Women retelling I‘ve read, and ironically, I‘m yet to read the original. I like comparing the differences and similarities in each retelling I read, since this varied from the last one I read ( Meg, Beth, Jo, and Amy) so much. It was nice and quick, but it didn‘t feel rushed. The only bad thing I have to say is that it is a little weird for an eighth grade boy to be staring at a freshman girl. 5⭐️

This book mimics the trials and tribulations of the beloved “Little Women“ by Louisa May Alcott as played out by a Muslim American family. But, of course, it has been updated to the current day with different and bigger difficulties - 21st Century problems. It is really well done. As a matter fact took me a while before I realized it was a retelling of “Little Women“. Excellent book for middle graders and above.

Current read-aloud with my daughter (11). We read Little Women last year and saw the recent movie.
We are both enjoying this retelling 😊

when i picked up More to the Story i had no idea this would end up being exactly what i needed in a book at the moment. as a writer myself, reading about a young aspiring reporter was very neat. the culture of the characters taught me more than what i previously knew, which i always love in a book. the story was intriguing when it took a turn, and i really enjoyed this book!

Book 57 of 2019! 🌟I usually stay away from retelling of my favorite classics. HOWEVER, this book is AMAZING! A Little Women retelling, set in present day America, and tells the story of a modern American Muslim family. Jameel ( Jo March‘s counterpart ) tells of the joys and trials her family faces. We NEED more Diverse Children/ Middle Grade books, and Khan delivers an amazing retelling of the classic.

Scochrane26 That looks cute. 5y

My daughter (Olivia, 8yo) and I loved this book. It‘s inspired by Little Women, with 4 sisters learning about the world, but with a modern-day Pakistani-American family. One of the younger sisters is diagnosed with cancer, and the family pulls together and also creates a support system with their community. The sister who narrates, Jameela, wants to be a journalist and she learns a lot. I recommend this middle grade novel, and so does Olivia!

tjwill Just wanted to add that my daughter also told me last night that she might just want to read one chapter tonight because she didn‘t want it to end. We finished it anyway because we couldn‘t stop. 5y
