Dead Man's Mirror: A Hercule Poirot Story | Agatha Christie
28 posts | 50 read | 9 to read
Previously published in the print anthology Murder in the Mews: Four Cases of Hercule Poirot. Hercule Poirot attends an auction and gets much more than he bid on: a disputed will, gunshots, and ancient Egyptian spirits. This might be Poirot's strangest case yet.

One and a half weeks of school after the October break and I am not able to read anymore. I am only able to listen to audiobooks. This is another Poirot in which I did not see the ending coming. Poirot‘s risky and mischievous plan worked well.

I should have written the tiny print before I started listening to this one. Imagine my surprise, two hrs into the audio and the mystery almost solved and there‘s four hrs left. This is a collection of four stories: Murder in the Mews (naturally), The Incredible Theft, Dead Man‘s Mirror and Triangle at Rhodes. Once I got over the fact that this was four stories, I quite enjoyed them.

Hugh Fraser also did the audio for three of the stories.

BarbaraJean I did the same thing with this audiobook—I was so confused when everything seemed to be wrapping up so quickly! 14mo

Another fantastic Poirot collection.

These four stories were Murder in the Mews, The Incredible Theft, Dead Man's Mirror, & Triangle at Rhodes.

Interestingly, I really enjoyed The Incredible Theft, because unlike the others, I wasn't overly familiar with the TV adaptation. Our family tend to avoid the ones about kidnapping the prime minister or stealing submarine plans etc, so I got to read it with relatively fresh eyes.

Good stuff.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

#BookReport

I continued reading The Sum of Us and listening to Murder in the Mews

I finished The Fraud andI have just finished Poor Things.

I‘m about to start Learned by Heart.

Cinfhen I just bailed on the new Donahue- I couldn‘t get into it 🤷🏼‍♀️I‘ll be curious to hear your thoughts 1y
AnneCecilie I‘m not that far in yet (50p), but so far I‘m enjoying the dynamics between the girls and how they are trying to figure each other out. 1y

#WeeklyForecast

Continue my reading of The Sum of Us

Finish The Fraud and continue my listening of Murder in the Mews

I want to read Poor Things and hopefully get a start on Learned by Heart

Cinfhen Are you enjoying the new Smith??? It‘s a chunkster!! 1y
AnneCecilie @Cinfhen I‘m enjoying it, the fraud case is based on a real case from London at the time, but I think the rest is fiction. Not much is happening, so it feels more like a character study, but I‘ve just passed the halfway mark, so things might change. 1y

3. These stories are closer to novellas than her typical short stories. Did you think this was successful? Would you have preferred them to be longer or shorter?

#agathachristieclubR2

TheAromaofBooks I'm not a short story person, so the longer the better haha I did feel like there was a little more room to develop some characters beyond names, especially in the story where the guy gets shot in the locked study - there's a whole house party there, and these slightly longer stories helped me feel like I had time to learn a little more about them. 2y
ferskner @TheAromaofBooks I also don't always love short stories and prefer the novels, although I do really like the Christie short story adaptations. These had a nice balance to them to make everything feel a little more fleshed out, and I thought made the solutions less obvious. In a lot of the stories, there are so few clues that any piece of info is glaringly important, and I didn't have that feeling here. The novels hide so much more! 2y
TheAromaofBooks That is definitely true, although I hadn't thought about it that way before - the novels do allow a lot more time/opportunities for red herrings and confusion! 2y

2. Which story was your favorite, and why?

#agathachristieclubR2

TheAromaofBooks I enjoyed them all and none of them particularly leaped out at me, but probably Dead Man's Mirror just because I love a locked-room murder. 2y
ferskner @TheAromaofBooks that's interesting because I think that was my least favorite! I was like "the bullet hit the gong and only one person heard it?!?!?" I agree on the locked room element, but I felt like she was stretching to make it work. I think maybe Murder in the Mews was my favorite? I liked that it was committing a crime by using another person's death (which is messed up for many reasons!). 2y

Hi #agathachristieclubR2 friends! I'm drowning in book-judging duties this right now and of course behind on posting, so I'm going to do this quick so I can clear my mind!

1. Did you enjoy this book? Why or why not?

Laughterhp I read this one a long time ago but then tried to reread it. I wasn‘t feeling the audiobook, so I stopped my reread. From what I remember, I did like this one, but wasn‘t my favorite. 2y
TheAromaofBooks These weren't my all-time favorites, but that's partially because I'm not a big short-story reader. Still, Christie does fool me every time, so there's that 😂 @Laughterhp 2y

ferskner @Laughterhp @TheAromaofBooks agreed, I liked this overall but I don't think the stories are her most memorable. But meh Poirot is still pretty great! (Unless it's The Big Four - that book is dead to me.) 2y
TheAromaofBooks @ferskner - LOL Now I kind of need to know what about The Big Four emotionally devastated you! 😂 2y
ferskner @TheAromaofBooks @Laughterhp haha I just remember reading The Big Four for the first time and feeling so betrayed. Like I thought all Christies were perfect and so to realize that there could be one I didn't like was so devastating! Now I know there are several I don't like, but that one is the worst. 2y

This was an enjoyable collection of short Poirot cases. A murder staged as a suicide, a suicide that looks like murder, a theft of top secret documents, and a dangerous love triangle - all solved with Poirot's usual wit and curiosity.

Overall I enjoyed these short mysteries, but two of them I had read before in my collection of Poirot short stories. I didn‘t remember the endings, but the overall story seemed familiar to me. It was fun to read with my #lmpbc group though! And a quick read since they were short stories. Overall a pick!

This was fun: four cases featuring Poirot. I was thrown off by the first story—I‘d forgotten there were 4 separate stories & was disappointed that the solution seemed so obvious so early on. Then I realized it was a short story & I‘d reached the conclusion...🤦🏻‍♀️😂 I enjoyed these much more than other Poirot short stories I‘ve read (partly b/c there was no Hastings), but I do prefer the greater complexity of Christie‘s novel-length mysteries.

A terrific lunchtime read - 4 Poirot cases in one volume. They may be short stories, but in each one the mystery and characters are perfectly developed.

I didn‘t realize it when I first picked up the book, but this is actually four short Poirot stories. Dead Man‘s Mirror was my favorite of the four because I found it had the most twists than the others. I did enjoy each short mystery, but my favor still rests with Christie‘s long mystery novels. Still a pic!

While I did enjoy these Poirot short stories, it didn't quite capture me the same way as the full length mysteries do. But definitely enjoyable nevertheless.

At my parents for a few days and found some old books I had stored there. I knew I went through an Agatha Christie phase and wasn't sure what books I had of hers. (Ignore the filter - used the one that highlighted the books the best)

All great characters are capable of entertaining us again and again, but only the very greatest are new every time we read them. Hercules Poirot is a member of this very small club. Timothy Hallinan. l
