Tiny House Living
Tiny House Living: Ideas For Building and Living Well In Less than 400 Square Feet | Ryan Mitchell
5 posts | 3 read | 3 to read
Tiny House, Large Lifestyle! Tiny homes are popping up across America, captivating people with their novel approach not only to housing, but to life. Once considered little more than a charming oddity, the tiny house movement continues to gain momentum among those who thirst for a simpler, "greener," more meaningful life in the face of society's "more is better" mindset. This book explores the philosophies behind the tiny house lifestyle, helps you determine whether it's a good fit for you, and guides you through the transition to a smaller space. For inspiration, you'll meet tiny house pioneers and hear how they built their dwellings (and their lives) in unconventional, creative and purposeful ways. They'll invite you in, show you around their cozy abodes, and share lessons they learned along the way. Inside you'll find everything you need to design a tiny home of your own: Worksheets and exercises to help you home in on your true needs, define personal goals, and develop a tiny house layout that's just right for you. Practical strategies for cutting through clutter and paring down your possessions. Guidance through the world of building codes and zoning laws. Design tricks for making the most of every square foot, including multi-function features and ways to maximize vertical space. Tours of 11 tiny houses and the unique story behind each. Tiny House Living is about distilling life down to that which you value most...freeing yourself from clutter, mortgages and home maintenance...and, in doing so, making more room in everyday life for the really important things, like relationships, passions and community. Whether you downsize to a 400-square-foot home or simply scale back the amount of stuff you have in your current home, this book shows you how to live well with less.

Day 21: Use less stuff day

This made me think of the tiny home movement. 🏠

MoonWitch94 One of my friends and his partner live in a tiny house 🏠 in NC! It‘s a whole court of them. It‘s so cute! But personally I‘m too claustrophobic for one lol 4y
TheSpineView I am like you. I could do smaller say 800 sq ft. To me a one bedroom with a large deck that is partially screened in would be the way to go. 4y
TheAromaofBooks The main problem with tiny houses is they never seem to have enough bookshelf room! 😂 We've rented houses of all different sizes, but our current house feels about right - it's small (1BR/1BA) but not claustrophobic. A smaller house does help me get rid of stuff that I don't really use or need, though, so I can understand the movement! 4y
TheSpineView @TheAromaofBooks Never enough book shelves! 📚📚📚 4y
Eggs The Tiny House is definitely in my future 4y

I am fascinated by tiny houses. Lots of nice photographs in this book.

LeslieO Me too! I love thinking about what I would take, what I would give up, and how my husband would live in his own tiny house next door cuz we both could not live in one. 7y
Zelma I could live in one easily as a single person with no pets. I've lived in a small studio and Mr. Z once lived on a ferry boat. But not with a partner or cats; way too crowded. 7y
CouronneDhiver Me too! I'd love it 7y

Taking a break from some heavy reading to watch Tiny House Hunters. This show makes me laugh and works my eye muscles. #guiltypleasure

julesG Cute! 8y
DGRachel I truly don't understand how people can live in such small houses. I mean, more power to them for being able to downsize that much, but there is no way I could do it. 8y
josie281 @DGRachel my parents are getting one to use as a cabin. That I understand. 8y

DGRachel @josie281 I could see that - a little vacation place, escape from reality for a few days - but as my primary residence, I just couldn't. 8y
josie281 I joke with my family that I want a tiny house... in the backyard for only me. They can live in the main house 😉 8y
Books_Wine_Repeat @DGRachel @josie281 I agree! It would be nice as a vacation home but definitely not as a permanent thing. I need a tiny home just for my kids' toys. 😜 8y
Laura317 I'd want a tiny home just to get away from the house and read! 8y

This is one of the best quotes I have ever read about tiny houses. McMansions are a huge thing here in Utah. Families of 4 or so, living in 4000-6000 square foot homes. We are a family of 7. We live in 1500 square feet. And people legitimately think we must be poverty-stricken. Sometimes I'd like a bigger kitchen, or one more bathroom. But mostly, we're fine. Less to clean. :)

Bookzombie I'm all about less to clean! That's my first thought when I see large homes. 😁 8y
josie281 I like living in a space where my family overlaps. No hiding out forever. 8y
AnnieReads I like living in a smaller space. Less to clean. 7y
