I lead an IRL book club for fellow parents and friends wanting to read more middle grade books! Each month I select 3 middle grade (MG) books (sometimes throw in a few young adult-YA) based on a theme. Members pick one, two, or all three to read. I thought some of you might want to join in! This month's theme is Bullying; the 3 books are shown above (2 middle grade, 1 YA). If you read along with us, just tag me and the event #MGBookWhisperer

This was a horrible book, it was all over the place. It started on one character, went into a flash back, and then we read as another character!

This book I find really cool its a modern remake of 1950s comics which is a cool concept most of these comics are hunting based and I like that about it.
For some reason I can't tag this book sorry

Chase Ambrose is the captain of the football team, the school's superstar athlete, and the most feared bully in the school, but this all changes after he falls off his roof and is diagnosed with amnesia. He can rember basic things like walking or eating, but he doesn‘t even remember his mother. Chase's old friends (Aaron and Bear) try to help Chase get back to his old life of causing fear and havoc wherever they go.

MackenzieS At lunch one day, Chase meets video club nerd Brendan Espinoza, and he shows Chase how his friends' actions (and his old ones) have affected the people around him. Chase has to battle with trying to find his new identity and change his reputation, so he can be the person he wants to become with the pressure of others trying to make him the person he was. 4y
MackenzieS Soon Chase's question changes from “who was I?” to “who am I going to be?” because not everyone gets a chance to restart. If you enjoy books that have a moral teaching to them, have a bit of mystery, and have the cliche highschool clique atmosphere, I would recommend this for you. 4y
MackenzieS This book is written in third-person omniscient point of view, and the author does this by writing each chapter from the point of view from different characters in the book.

I love the concept of this book and the idea of how other people might see you. This is sometimes a difficult concept for teens to grasp. The notion that your persona is not set in stone and that change is possible is as important as the themes of forgiveness and acceptance. A great book for middle schoolers with some excellent creative writing prompts

Restart is about Chase who lost his previous memory‘s about his family, friends, and things he enjoyed. He has to live his life and figure out who he is and where he belongs. He had some problems with other people that he had to resolve. He gets in trouble and he was the best football player at his school. I like it, I would recommend reading Restart if you haven‘t already.

This book is so good! It‘s about a boy who falls off a roof and gets amnesia. He can‘t remember the bully that he used to be. In fact, he can‘t remember anything! I liked this book because of the lesson it taught. People CAN change and sometimes you just have to look for the good in people. Great book, 8.5/10.

Cfischbuch One of my favourites. I loved the way you summed it up - people can change. So true. 4y

This was a pretty average middle grade novel with very average writing and some pretty big holes in the plot but..... it held my attention among the craziness and that‘s enough for me right now. Hoping to move onto something with a bit more substance next. This was also my March #bookspin and another one ticked off my TBR. @TheAromaofBooks

Chase gets what a lot of us have wished for — a chance to have a fresh start. He can‘t remember anyone, doesn‘t remember who he is. But his efforts to be a new person, the person he wants to be, are thwarted by his old friends and the things he‘s done.

A well-told story of redemption, forgiveness, and the difficulties of making the right choices.

LibrarianRyan I have been reading so many Letters about Lit for this book. Oh so many 5y

This book is amazing!!! I have been sucked into it from page one! I originally had to read this for school and I was still amped up for it because so love to read but this book is perfect for anyone transitioning into 6th,7th, or 8th. Korman uses the best descriptive language and is always ready to surprise you! I would have you read it immediately!

Have you ever wanted a second chance at life? Chase gets one after a fall from his roof causes amnesia. Unfortunately, everyone else remembers him or at least how he was before. A great story with fabulous characters. It has the heart of a Korman novel but is a bit more serious.

9/10 YA fiction is a good change of pace. Simple story with an interesting premise, this would be a fantastic jumping point for other short stories. Well written, charming without being smarmy and cynical.

I read this to lead an empathy book club with adults with intellectual disabilities at my internship. Besides the fact that the book club has been a great experience, the book was pretty good too! Chase falls off the roof and gets amnesia. Once he tries to resume his normal life, he finds out that he was a bully. He has to decide what kind of person he is now. Great for making you think about empathy and how to treat others

Compassion, change, and identity in school are all tackled here for preteens. Parts felt like listening to great episodes of my favorite podcast, Story Corps. It captured students' experiences from various viewpoints and a medal of honor recipient sharing his mixed feelings on war. It was great to see stereotypes of older people broken down a bit for this audience.

I really enjoyed this middle grade novel by Gordon Korman. I am going to do a book talk about it this week to recommend it to my 7th grade class. The main character, Chase, has an accident, wakes up with amnesia, and is unable to remember anything about himself. The book follows him as he comes to terms with what he learns about himself.

Daisey I liked this one, and I just finished another book by Korman that included amnesia as an important plot point. Interesting, I hadn't thought to connect the two until I saw your post. 6y
Melkyl @Daisey That one looks interesting. I put it on my “To Read” list. Thanks! 6y
Tamra My son (11) got this one because the premise is very interesting. I‘d like to read it with him! 6y

My eleven year old passed along Gordon Korman‘s Restart to me. What a great book! The protagonist, Chase, wakes up one day in the hospital, with no memory of his life. As he returns to school, he begins to learn about who he was and to consider whether that‘s who he still wants to be. The novel is a fabulous springboard to considering how our identities are created by the choices we make and whether we have the power to change.

Question 12 #mgbuddyread

Amie I'm probably the only person who didn't really care for the book, but realistic fiction is one of my least favorite genres so it's probably just not the book for me. I found it really boring and ended up skipping a big chunk of it - which probably a lot of important stuff happened so I'm sure that affected my opinion too. I appreciated how Chase took responsibility even though he didn't remember his actions, but ⬇️ 7y
Amie I would have preferred a story where he changed due to a conscious realization that his actions were wrong rather than changing because of a head injury. 7y
TheBookHippie @amie I find in books where the bully changes on his own the kids reject the book entirely ...Blubber is still a favorite because the bully remains, nothing changes. I'm interested to see what my kiddos think of this one. 7y
See All 7 Comments
TheBookHippie Thanks for hosting these! It's good for me to get new books for bookclubs, Library and my personal use. I can't wait for kids I know to read this. 7y
Amie @TheBookHippie that's a good point - I'm probably not looking at it like a kid would. 7y
TheBookHippie @amie I'm at the point where they are: bullying really does not get handled ..so you get a little jaded 😭 I'm very interested to see what happens when this gets read. 7y
Peddler410 I really liked this story.....more so for the other characters and how they interacted with Chase. Again, I did not finish my reread, but @amie I think by the time Chase took responsibility in the end he did have some of those memories back. I'm still planning to finish reading this one with my daughter. 7y

Question 11 #mgbuddyread

TheBookHippie I think so. Sometimes this would be good, sometimes bad and with Alzheimer's and traumatic brain injuries it's very very heartbreaking. 7y
Daisey I think it can be, but there are too many causes and variables to say it is. 7y
Peddler410 I do believe losing your memory does change your life. Regardless of the situation. Even when the change has positive elements, it would have to be heartbreaking to lose yourself. 7y

Question 10 #mgbuddyread

TheBookHippie Him admitting he feels differently but doesn't know for sure IF he is, is the sign he's changed I think. 7y
Daisey @TheBookHippie I agree! He seems to admit that he knows he‘s going to have consciously work to be different, so he doesn‘t fall back into what he was. That seems important to me for there to be real change. 7y
Peddler410 I agree. I think I would like a companion novel. 7y
Lmstraubie @Peddler410 Interesting... would you want it to show more of Chase before or Chase after? 7y
