This was such a fun book! Elizabeth runs a girls school but secretly writes penny dreadfuls under a penname & no one can find out or risk her school. Fletcher is an author of penny dreadfuls but also a member of the mysterious Dread Penny Society, which secretly offers help to urchins & the less fortunate. Chapters of each of their penny dreadfuls are interspersed throughout their adventures as they work together but each try to keep their secrets

peanutnine I'm glad I spotted this at the library and picked it up on a whim! Already looking forward to the next in the series! #SeriesLove2023 @Andrew65 @TheSpineView 1y

This is what happens when a mood reader who's in a mini book slump enters a library... I've given up on my July TBR and am embracing the distractions 😅
Foxglove King was on hold and the reason for my visit + two already on my radar + tagged that just sounds fun

The story was rather uninspired. A Victorian romance with the typical tropes of class difference, a secret society, a woman who knows her mind.

The "interesting" bits were the penny dreadful installments of the two competing authors at the beginning of each chapter.

The narrator was ?. Year, tear?, hear, ear, here, near rhymed with bare and blackguard was pronounced black-guard.? And not consistent w/ speech impediments like lisps.

Andrew65 Well done 👏👏👏 2y
melzen God job! sad that the narrator wasn‘t as pleasing as the book. Thank you for the recommendation 🥰 2y
julesG @melmes I guess I would have liked it better had I read it instead of listening to the audiobook. 2y

I was looking for a new cozy mystery series and found this one on Audible Plus. I love the time period and the separate stories throughout, or Penny Dreadfuls I should say. Although the addition of the Penny Dreadful chapters can get a little confusing on audiobook. There‘s also plenty of humor and I read this and quickly went through books 2 and 3 as well. 4⭐️

Finished this one last week. It was a fun historical romance. A very clean romance. Elizabeth is a writer of literature and penny dreadfuls. She also runs a school for girls. She has to write the penny‘s secretly or it will ruin her reputation. She meets Fletcher who is trying to uncover the author who is now outselling him. You also get to read both of their current stories, which wasn‘t as confusing as I thought it would be. I‘ll read more.

My first finish for #33by33. This was a good beginning to a series. It is set in the time of Penny dreadfuls and silver fork novels. Although a romance at heart, it touches on some serious topics: poverty, education equality and gender equality.

I look forward to the next in the series.

A sweet Victorian romance between two writers of “Penny Dreadful” stories. #romantsy

This was a nice historical romance. I loved how chapters from the characters' penny dreadfuls were interspersed and contributed to the plot. It was a fun read that I couldn't put down.

This is a Victorian-era sweet romance involving the Dread Penny Society, a secret society made up of authors who wrote penny dreadfuls (cheap serials aimed at middle/lower class readers). This society used their funds and resources to help the oppressed street children of London. The leader, Fletcher, grew up on the streets himself. Elizabeth has her own school for middle-class girls, is a silver-fork author and anonymously pens penny dreadfuls.🔽

robinb The book alternates between real-life stories of saving children from villains, penny dreadful stories penned by Fletcher and Elizabeth and a burgeoning romance. While sweet, this was really between a pick and a so-so for me. I was not as engaged with the story as I could have been. 3/5⭐️ #NetGalley #ShadowMountain (edited) 5y
