Kingdom of Lies
Kingdom of Lies: Unnerving Adventures in the World of Cybercrime | Kate Fazzini
4 posts | 1 read | 2 to read
"Kingdom of Lies is a brilliant and bold debut, as full of suspense as the best crime thrillers. Linda Fairstein, New York Times bestselling author of Blood Oath In the tradition of Michael Lewis and Tom Wolfe, a fascinating and frightening behind-the-scenes look at the interconnected cultures of hackers, security specialists, and law enforcement A 19-year-old Romanian student stumbles into a criminal ransomware ring in her village. Soon she is extorting Silicon Valley billionaires for millions--without knowing the first thing about computers. A veteran cybersecurity specialist has built a deep network of top notch hackers in one of the worlds largest banks. But then the bank brings in a cadre of ex-military personnel to help. A cynical Russian only leaves his tiny New Jersey apartment to hack sports cars at a high performance shop in Newark. But he opens his door to a consultant who needs his help. A hotel doorman in China once served in the Peoples Army, stealing intellectual property from American companies. Now he uses his skills to build up a private side-business selling the data he takes from travelers to Shanghais commercial center. Kingdom of Lies follows the intertwined stories of cybercriminals and ethical hackers as they jump from criminal trend to criminal trend, crisis to crisis. A cybersecurity professional turned journalist, Kate Fazzini illuminates the many lies companies and governments tell us about our security, the lies criminals tell to get ahead, and the lies security leaders tell to make us think they are better at their jobs than they are. Like Traffic set in the cybercrime world, Kingdom of Lies is as entertaining as it is eye opening.

Mehso-so

This is the first audiobook I‘ve ever listened to that includes the glossary. It‘s less than 6 hours w/o it. Fazzini offers up portraits of people involved in different aspects of cybercrime/cybersecurity. Some of their paths cross, others don‘t. It‘s a brief overview of the field that feels unfinished.

This seems like the perfect follow up to The Age of Surveillance Capitalism. Let‘s see....

I know this is yet another late #BFCr2 check-in, but I didn‘t check in at all last week, and I couldn‘t let that happen again! I got 75 minutes of cardio this week and 30 minutes of stretching. I‘m not hitting my goals, but I‘m still doing more than I did before #BFC, so I‘m happy about that. I also finished the tagged book; my first of four. Not quite what I was looking for, but still a good read. (Pic from a walk this week.) #smallsteppers

TheBookAddict 🙌🏽 That‘s great, keep it up. For me it‘s been about staying active, which is usually what I struggle with. I‘ve had to change my goals a bit, but as long as I‘m moving it‘s all good. Hope you keep on staying active as well. Will you bee joining round 3? 5y
Laughterhp Great job! You‘re still getting out there so that‘s great! Thanks for checking in! 😊 5y
TheWordJar @TheBookAddict Thanks! I came into this just looking to be active more consistently as well. I thought about changing my goals, but I‘m not sure what I‘d change them to right now, and the goals I did make keep me moving, so I still find them useful. I will be signing up for round 3! You? I think I‘m going to see what kind of goals others have to get some good ideas. 5y

Sorry for the late #BFCr2 Week 2 check-in. It was another crazy week! Some unexpected travel and some expected houseguests. Not sure how much cardio I got, but I golfed 18 holes with my husband, which we haven‘t done for years, because kids, so happiness meter filled. (We first met each other on the golf course!) Looking forward to a much slower-paced second half of this week! I hope to finish tagged and pictured book this week. #SmallSteppers
