1. Hmmm... Japan, the British Isles, Central/Middle America. Or right here, where I am. Like south Germany a lot better now I've got my darlings here.

2. In a book? From what I remember, 'Zuhause' (At home) by Icelandic author Kristof Magnusson had a great description of coming home after a long absence.

3. Tagged. Haven't read it yet, but it's set on partly around the East Frisian Islands, where I holiday often and feel at home somehow...

This is a really hard one to rate because I read it as an ebook, and the publishers of said ebook didn't bother to keep any of the charts/maps that were in the original book and that the author CONSTANTLY referred to (“as you can see from the attached chart...“ No, actually, I CANNOT see from the attached chart because IT IS NO LONGER THERE!), which honestly did make it difficult to follow the story. Huge parts of the plot are dependent on the ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) characters making their way through specific narrow channels and tidal flats, and conclusions are based on how close certain islands are to this or that, etc. Originally published in 1903, although this is considered a thriller, it wasn't the type that keeps you on the edge of your seat, as for a lot of the book the two main characters aren't even sure exactly what they are looking for or even if there is anything to be found! Still, I ⬇ 3y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) did enjoy this one - it rather gave me Swallows & Amazons vibes as there is a great deal of time spent talking about ropes and sails and tides - but I would only recommend this one if you can find the needed charts (I tried to find them online but it was very difficult to match them up, and one that I found clearly labeled for this book had NOTHING to do with this book, which definitely added to the confusion) or if you're particularly ⬇ 3y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) interested in English/German relationships around 1900 haha A fun read and interesting for historical value, but not one I see myself revisiting.

jb72 Wow….great job! You know it‘s 2022 you‘d think ebooks would be digitally perfect today. That is one of the things that really annoy me. I recently couldn‘t read a cookbook because all the measurements weren‘t there. 3y
TheAromaofBooks @jb72 - Oh my gosh, that's so annoying! This book referred to the charts and maps probably once or twice a chapter, so the lack of them was beyond just “I wish I had a map“ to “the map is a critical part of the story“. I have no idea why so many ebooks only upload text and zero images. 3y
Yuki_Onna Will gladly try to mail you the maps, if you like!
I have the German edition, but maybe they'll help nevertheless?
As I have spent many holidays on the East Frisian Islands, where much of the book takes place, I felt compelled to get my own copy of the book although I'm not that interested in spy stories... The book seems to be recommended lit for holiday guests and islanders in East Frisia, so... 💁‍♀️😊
3y
TheAromaofBooks @Yuki_Onna - Thank you so much for your offer!! You don't have to send them, though - the only way I will reread this one is if I find a physical copy with the maps where they belong!! 😂 That is so cool that you have visited the East Frisian Islands, though! It would be awesome to really get a sense of the distance and atmosphere. 3y
Yuki_Onna I spend many holidays as a child/teen on either Borkum, Norderney, Langeoog or Wangerooge... 😁 The seven islands are tiny - in average about 3 miles long... The feeling could be likened a bit to Cape Cod.
Spent all summer holidays since 2019 (due to Covid we had to stay in Germany) on Langeoog as well... The link shows the bookstore there where I bought my copy of the book, btw. ... 😊

#BookReport looking pretty good this week, actually! I had a few evenings where readings sounded more engaging than RDR2 (lol) so that helped. Really enjoyed Scythe and Illusions of Fate; The Inn at Eagle Point was a solid if unexciting romance; Winter Garden was really good but really sad; Pride was okay but not really my cup of tea. I started the tagged book last night - a Kindle reprint of a 1903 spy thriller, except they did NOT reprint the ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) maps! I've had to dig about the internet to figure out where in the world these guys are going! 😂

paperwitchs Loveeee RDR2 3y
TheAromaofBooks @Bookzombie - I wasn't expecting to enjoy it as much as I did, but now I can't wait to dive into the second book!! 3y
TheAromaofBooks @paperwitchs - I have a serious addiction - between my husband and me, this is our third play-through. I'm trying to get 100% completion... finally found my final cigarette card last night 😂 3y
paperwitchs @TheAromaofBooks omg I‘ve been looking for the last of those cards for years 😭😭 3y
TheAromaofBooks @paperwitchs - Well I did “cheat“ and look up some of them. There is no way I would have found them all on my own!!! 3y

Pickpick

I‘m giving this a pick, but it‘s not a strong one. I don‘t read many of this genre, but I went in expecting much more tension and action. Much of the story is heavy on the technical details of sailing and the specific location (I wanted maps and illustrations as I listened). Overall, I did find it interesting, but it wasn‘t quite what I was expecting.

More thoughts in the comments. ⬇️

Daisey As I read more books on the #1001books list, I realize that the books chosen are not necessarily great books. They are often books that show the development of literature, and genres continue to develop and often improve to our perspective. This book, considered one of the first spy novels, is a perfect example of that aspect. It made a real historical and literary impact. I appreciate it for that reason and am glad to have read it. 3y
Daisey @BarbaraBB I finished it and definitely have thoughts. I think I could have really enjoyed this if I was well versed in sailing and more familiar with the geography of this area of the North Sea. However, as a spy novel, it was incredibly lacking in tension. 3y
BarbaraBB You are right about the #1001books list I think. That makes it fascinating but at times hard too. I have read many books like this one (first in its genre) that left me underwhelmed because I AM looking for a great book! 3y

Daisey @BarbaraBB Yes, I know exactly what you mean. The list has been frustrating for me for this very reason. As I‘ve realized this though, I try to use initial reviews to better prepare myself for the type of book from the list I‘m about to read and appreciate them for what they are. (edited) 3y
JazzFeathers I see what you're saying. I had the same feeling when l read The 39 Steps. But l think perspective should help us. This is on my TBR and now I'm even more curious. 3y
Daisey @JazzFeathers Yes, I can completely appreciate these kind of books for what they are as long as I know what I'm getting as I go into them. If you read this one, just be prepared for lots of description about sailing and small channels that become impassable at low tide rather than much actual intrigue. 3y
Daisey @JazzFeathers I looked up 39 steps today and it‘s also on the list. It seems like it would be interesting compare to this one, but I don‘t think I can fit it in soon, if I even found a copy. 3y
JazzFeathers @Daisey l read it on Serial Reader. It's in the public domain 😁 3y

#CurrentlyListening to this #audiobook that is considered one of the first spy novels and on the #1001books list during my evening walks. I‘m almost halfway through and I‘d have to say I expected a bit more action by this point. I‘ve also had to look up some maps of this area along the North Sea. #audiowalk

BarbaraBB I never dares try this one so far. Such mixed reviews. I‘ll be waiting for your review! 3y

Pickpick

Set before World War I, 2 sailors, Davies and Carruthers, are set against the secret forces of Germany. They uncover a plot which threatens personal as well as national security. UK has since developed a naval base at Rosyth. Davies suspects the Germans are doing something sinister in the German Frisian islands. This is said to be the first spy novel and was published in 1903. The information about yachting was a bit too detailed. Recommended

A spy novel has to contain deception and #lies surely. Set in the 1890s when upper class men called each other by their surnames e.g. the two lead characters are Carruthers and Davies.
