My Family and Other Animals | Gerald Durrell, Jocelyn Potter

For a week or so the wind played with the island, patting it, stroking it, humming to itself among the bare branches. Then there was a lull, a few days' strange calm; suddenly, when you least expected it, the wind would be back. But it was a changed wind, a mad, hooting, bellowing wind that leaped down on the island and tried to blow it into the sea.

SFM13 I loved reading Gerald's humorous anecdotes, my favorite was the blow-by-blow account of a battle between a gecko named Geronimo and Cecily, a feisty praying mantis. His enchanting way of describing island scenery really brought the story to life for me. Here is an example of his writing style … easily relatable considering the mountain winds that blew outside my window as I lay reading, snug in my warm cozy bed. 5y

Pickpick

January began with reflections from Gerald Durrell (b. Jan. 7, 1925) in his book My Family and Other Animals. During my reading adventure, I discovered “The Durrells in Corfu,” a PBS series available on Amazon Prime Video. If you haven't seen this yet, it is worth checking out. The series is classified a comedy drama, which is also an accurate description of Gerald Durrell's writing style.
