Life on Air
Life on Air: Memoirs of a Broadcaster | David Attenborough
11 posts | 10 read | 8 to read
David Attenborough is one of the most influential and admired figures in English television. When 26, he applied for a job in the BBC - which then meant radio - and was promptly turned down. But someone saw his rejected application and asked, would he like to try television? He would, and sixty years later, he is still at it. Elegantly told, often very funny, here is his story. At home there is his rise to controlling BBC2, introducing colour television to Britain, encounters with Montgomery, Anthony Eden, singers, athletes, explorers, the Queen, Benjamin Britten. Abroad there are people just as remarkable, journeys up tropical rivers, to the interior of New Guinea or the Australian outback, dragons, birds of paradise, flying snakes and walls of cockroaches. Now updated to cover his work since 2009, Life on Air is a remarkable account of David Attenborough's passion for the natural world and his lifelong quest to understand it. .

#gratefulreads I must take this #memoir down from the shelves soon... Sir David was a constant TV presence in our house while I was growing up.... Groundbreaking programmes at the time, many memorable moments
Knew he was Commissioner but didn't realise he commissioned Monty Python.

I have no words for how amazing Sir David Attenborough is. Legend is used to describe too many people nowadays, but Sir David is one who entirely deserves the title. This book is a rare opportunity to understand the achievements of a person who doesn‘t enjoy talking about his life on a day to day basis. It‘s anecdotal, funny, wondrous & sad. I can‘t comprehend all that this man has done & seen, but this book does a good job of describing it to us.

Autobiography of Sir David Attenborough which I discovered in my late father's possessions (my unread book.... The old rogue had knicked it 😍😍). So it's a priceless paperback to me now as he's scribbled his thoughts in it too. #autobiography #marchinbooks @maich

Zelma What a great find, especially with the notes inside. 💜 7y

I made my first drop this morning for #booksontherail in Sydney. And let me tell you I was anything but stealthy. Has anyone else done this or its equivalent (like #booksonthesubway)? Can you teach me stealth?

Lindy Is stealth important? Emma Watson used social media to alert transit riders to her book drops in NYC subway stations. 8y
Heather_Reads @Lindy I posted on Instagram to say, "hey, keep a look out for this book". But I lacked stealth in actually leaving it. I wanted to leave it without people seeing me - so hard at a busy train station. 8y
Lindy @Heather_Reads I guess if you try to set it down casually and then walk away, good Samaritans might run after you to give it back! 8y
Heather_Reads @Lindy That was one of my main concerns. I had to hang around and wait between trains so there wouldn't be so many people around. I was about 15mins late for work today 😳 8y
Lindy Congratulations on being a book fairy! 8y

I admire this man so very much. I really should make time to get to know him on a more personal level through one of his books...
