Reading Historical Fiction
Reading Historical Fiction: The Revenant and Remembered Past | Kate Mitchell, Nicola Parsons
4 posts | 1 to read
This collection of essays that examines historical fiction from the eighteenth century to the present. In doing so, it provides a clear sense of both the shifts and continuities in the way historical recollection, strategies of representation, and reading practices intersect.

I like the time period up until the world wars. 1500s to 1900, probably. I also like it when real events and people are part of the plot, like Sansom and Bowen do it. Follett is also amazing. So many good authors out there! I also prefer series. I like to dig deep! Also exploring new to me authors I want to, no need to, read! #subjectofthemonth #historicalfiction

StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego At the moment I'm really enjoying Ruts Sepetys' books. I also like Conn Iggulden's Conqueror series, about Genghis Khan. 6y
Tove_Reads @StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego I‘m looking forward to reading her. On hold at the library. 6y
TrishB I like up to 1485. I can read later - normally 20th century. Like series historical fiction and I don‘t mind authors filling the gaps but hate inaccuracies. (edited) 6y

annahenke Honestly, I love it all! I love to learn from it! (I check the facts) 6y
sprainedbrain I think I really like it all... a few years ago I would have said 400s-1800s, but I‘ve read a lot of WWI and WWII historical fiction relatively recently that I just loved. As long as it well done and not grossly inaccurate! 6y
JacqMac I love all of it, too. It‘s by far my favourite genre. And I love looking up the real history while I read. 6y
melissanorr If you like historical mystery, the Sebastian St. Cyr series is one I highly recommend (if you haven't read it yet). 6y

I‘m involved in a few round robins, sending off books to the next recipient and reading some fun books, a few of which I would not pick up on my own.

I was wondering...any interest in a historical fiction round robin? Pick a book, grab a journal, jot down thoughts of the book, then send to the next person. If there is interest, I‘ll create a Google form and start collecting names. I‘m thinking to start this in the fall. Let me know! #hfswap

CouronneDhiver International or US only? 6y
BookishTrish Available to Canadians? 6y
erzascarletbookgasm If there‘s enough interest for international, I‘m in. 6y

Librarybelle @CouronneDhiver @BookishTrish @erzascarletbookgasm I think it would depend upon interest level. I would think there could be a US Only group and an international group, since it would be nice for everyone who wanted to to participate, but knowing the cost of mailing items internationally could be very expensive. Just gauging interest at the moment! (edited) 6y

Librarybelle Yes, @cathysaid ...similar. I‘m already in a mystery group, a teen group and a classics group. The more the merrier?!? (edited) 6y

I would rather...

1. Never crack the spines
2. Always drink tea
3. Be a character in a historical fiction novel
4. Only read in the evenings
5. Be an author (which I working on)

CrowCAH @Kalalalatja thanks! It's taken many years to get to the point I'm at, a complete first draft of book one, in my historical pirate adventure trilogy series. I'm currently working on editing it, which is ugh, but it will be well worth it, once I'm done. 7y
Kalalalatja I could imagine! Still, good job! I am so impressed with anybody just having the idea for a book, let alone a trilogy 😄 7y
CrowCAH @Kalalalatja and I know a great avenue for readers...Litsy! Can't have authors and books without readers of them! 7y
Kalalalatja Of course! It is the holy three 😄 7y
