The Android's Dream | John Scalzi

A human diplomat creates an interstellar incident when he kills an alien diplomat in a most...unusual...way. To avoid war, Earth's government must find an equally unusual object: A type of sheep ("The Android's Dream"), used in the alien race's coronation ceremony. To find the sheep, the government turns to Harry Creek, ex-cop, war hero and hacker extraordinaire, who with the help of Brian Javna, a childhood friend turned artificial intelligence, scours the earth looking for the rare creature. And they find it, in the unknowing form of Robin Baker, pet store owner, whose genes contain traces of the sheep DNA.But there are others with plans for the sheep as well: Mercenaries employed by the military. Adherents of a secret religion based on the writings of a 21st century science fiction author. And alien races, eager to start a revolution on their home world and a war on Earth. To keep our planet from being enslaved, Harry will have to pull off the greatest diplomatic coup in history, a grand gambit that will take him from the halls of power to the lava-strewn battlefields of alien worlds. There's only one chance to get it right, to save the life of Robin Baker -- and to protect the future of humanity.

A fun sci-fi romp! And it was nice to read something not at all holiday related and to strike it off my tbr.

This is probably my least favorite Scalzi. Overall, it was an enjoyable read. The ending was a bit much.

My kind of sci-fi: weirdness opens up discussion on important topics, i.e. animal rights and AI - whether sentient beings can be property, genetic modification. I love when politics enmeshed with militant machinations are the backbone of a story with a veteran protagonist because who better to prove there's more to people than violence, knows the real value of human life, the real cost of war. Smart, action-packed. [Warning: Gore, animal death.]

1. The Book Loft in Columbus, Ohio
2. That's tough. Even being a librarian, I haven't visited many. And I wouldn't say any of the ones I have been to have been good enough to be a fave.
3. Being able to have time to read and have access to the books I want. Especially purchasing them.

One of my favorite things about working in a used bookstore is when my recommendation shelf gets empty, and I have to wander around to see which books happen to be in stock right now. This morning I found a pretty good selection of books I‘ve loved! John Scalzi and Jasmine Guillory are pretty rare around here (probably because they‘re so awesome no one wants to part with their books!), so I was especially happy to find those.

keithmalek I found Spoken Here to be boring. In fact, I didn't finish it. I did, however, enjoy Confederates in the Attic. 5y
howjessicareads @keithmalek - ah bummer! I‘ve enjoyed both of Mark Abley‘s books, but I am a big word nerd. :) 5y

Absolutely loved this book, the way it starts is a little ridiculous but it weaves a really great story from there. I love sci-fi that delves into politics and religion. This book is funny and gripping and the characters are lovable.

FINALLY finished! I don‘t usually like sci-fi, but this was enjoyable. And Wil Wheaton narrating was hilarious (especially the random bit screamed in a Scottish accent).

The only good part of work travel is having time to read. 😀

A friend of mine recommended Scalzi‘s Redshirts, and since reading Redshirts, I‘ve been hooked on all things Scalzi. I love Scalzi‘s writing, his creativity, and his sense of humor. And this book did not disappoint.

bookwrm526 I, too, love Scalzi, but I almost bailed on this one when that early chapter was nothing but one long, elaborate fart joke lol 7y
wanderinglynn @bookwrm526 Yeah, that was a bit juvenile, and I wasn‘t sure where he was going to go with it, but it turned out rather funny. But if this book had been my first introduction to Scalzi, I might have not read it just because of that first chapter. So I‘m glad I started with Redshirts. 7y

I almost gave up on this one after the first chapter, which was essentially a long, elaborate fart joke....but Scalzi hasn't let me down yet, so I stuck with it, and it mostly redeemed itself by the end. An interesting story delivered in his typical humerous style, I ended up being glad I didn't bail. Picture from the web, of an art installation by Rainer Bock.

RaimeyGallant That is an intense picture. 7y
bookwrm526 @RaimeyGallant electric blue sheep play an important role in the story, so I googled that phrase and this is what came up! 7y

I was going to preface this by saying this was just my second Scalzi book but a quick Goodreads search says it's my fourth.

My search also points out that I have only listened to Scalzi books read by Wil Wheaton.

Coincidence? I think not. I am guessing I chose the books for the narrator rather than the author. Now I realize I may need to search out more by Scalzi including Red Shirts which is the only WW narrated book I haven't listened to.

Annl What are you knitting? 8y
carys14 @Annl The pattern is Stranger Things Cowl. I haven't watched the show yet but was drawn to the alphabet. I am using a baby alpaca/silk blend that feels wonderful. 😊 8y
Annl It looks beautiful! I saw the show. I will have to look at the pattern. Thanks! 8y

This political triller scifi hybrid is about a former State Department employee's search for a sheep--and the fate of the Earth depends on it! Yet, it somehow manages not to be silly. #politicalfiction #photoadaynov16
