The Stories of Ray Bradbury
The Stories of Ray Bradbury | Ray Bradbury
15 posts | 13 read | 14 to read
p-Included here are famous tales like 'Sound of Thunder', in which the carelessness of a group of time-travellers leads to disastrous consequences, and 'The Veldt', in which two seemingly innocent young children transform their nursery into a lethal trap. Here are the Martian stories, tales that vividly animate the red planet with its brittle cities and double-mooned sky. Here are stories which speak of a special nostalgia for Green Town, Illinois, the perfect setting for a seemingly cloudless childhood - except for the unknown terror lurking in the ravine. Here are the Irish stories and the Mexican stories, linked across their separate geographies by Bradbury's astonishing inventiveness. Here, too, are thrilling, terrifying stories such as 'The Fog Horn' - perfect for reading under the covers. Read for the first time, these stories are a feast for the imagination; read again - and again - they reveal new, dazzling facets of a master storyteller's extraordinary art.

I bought this from the library sale a bunch of years ago. I can't pass up a huge hardcover collection for a quarter, even if it's slightly damaged! My 7th grader read All Summer In A Day, which I had confused with There Will Come Soft Rains so I just read both of them tonight. 😁 Anyone else remember the short film for All Summer In A Day from the 80s?

Hi.

As it‘s no longer winter jacket time ( 🎉 ), I‘ve changed my profile picture.

This is so true. I am defo reading less contemporary and award winning fiction this year. 👍

https://austinkleon.com/2020/12/24/20-great-books-i-read-in-2020/

julesG Interesting. Thanks for sharing. 4y
Caroline2 @julesG I‘ve read a lot of mediocre books this year and I think this sums it up quite well. I need to ignore hype more!!! 😆 4y
julesG So with you. I'm trying to avoid the hyped books, or approach them with caution. That said, I'm looking forward to our discussion tonight. Starless Sea was hyped a bit, and I did a re-read of it... Makes me wonder whether I should read books twice on a regular basis. 4y

youneverarrived A lot of contemporary books are quite samey at the minute; similar themes, styles of writing etc. 4y
squirrelbrain Interesting! What a great viewpoint @Milara...... 4y
Crazeedi And have you noticed if one is a best seller, the covers of a lot of books start looking the same as that best seller?? 4y
Caroline2 @Milara That is a really good point. Plus it is so hard for new, up and coming writers to have something new to say when so many amazing books have been written already. 4y
Caroline2 @youneverarrived Totally agree. Some books are just out there to make money off the back of popular books. (edited) 4y
Caroline2 @Crazeedi Yep! 😆 I‘ve noticed that too! 4y
Caroline2 @squirrelbrain Gets you thinking doesn‘t it. 🤔 4y
Caroline2 @julesG I am so looking forward to our discussions tonight about that book! 😃 4y
julesG @Milara I suppose that the sheer numbers of books published has increased since the invention of the printing press. More books on the market does not necessarily mean more good books, too. I'd like to dive into this rabbit hole to look at percentages. 4y
Caroline2 @Milara Yes, yes and Yes!!! Totally agree. How can you write a book about love and marriage that compares to books like Anna Karenina?! And so many are written for TV! I couldn‘t agree more. This is all so fascinating! We should write a book on it!!!! 😆 💡 @jules 4y
marleed This is such an interesting thread of input that I took a snapshot so I can find it again to keep following the thread! 4y

When I saw that the Author-A-Month for September was to be a celebration of Ray Bradbury I became immediately excited because I knew that I owned a treasure book of his brilliant imagination, The Stories of Ray Bradbury. I‘ve read several stories out of this book over the years, yet I have many more to go. It‘s a really BIG book! This is my endeavor for #AuthorAMonth with R.B. in mind...👇🏽

Nute (Cont) to read several more stories from this collection, then checkout the celebrity reading of Fahrenheit 451 and possibly read a book of his that incredibly I have never purchased or read, The Martian Chronicles. We‘ll see how it goes.😀 (edited) 4y
TheBookDream Where is this author-a-month thing? 4y
Nute @TheBookDream This year long challenge is being hosted by @Soubhiville (many thanks💕). If you go to her feed and scroll back about six days then you will see a reposting of the challenge. I wish I had found my to it at the start of the year, but I‘m coming on board now. If you are like me you find yourself posting ‘better late than never‘ anyway!😅 (edited) 4y
TheBookDream Thank you! 4y

#AuthorAMonth - September- Ray Bradbury: I was happy to start my Author-A-Month participation in the month of September because of honoring Mr. Bradbury. It seem fitting because Ray and I, we go a long way back. It must be junior high or maybe elementary school...somewhere in there I came across his determination to fill the literary world with strange, peculiar...utterly odd and brilliantly imaginative stories of a far out mind. He was a wonder!

Soubhiville Great quote! 4y

Getting ready for adult story time at my library. Unfortunately, it seems a fitting time to revisit “There Will Come Soft Rains”...

No reading today. My brother, sister, and I were going through my Dad's books. I have some real treasures that I will post in the future, but they are still in my car. This one I brought inside right away. A Sound of Thunder is one of my favorite short stories. I'm so happy my dad passed on his love of reading. #biblioweekend

Happy Birthday to the incredible Ray Bradbury. ❤️❤️❤️

Though I've enjoyed so much of his writing over the years, I have to say that his short stories have always been my favorite. Here are a few great ones that you can read today online in no time if you're interested (you should be able to find the PDFs):

- The Fog Horn
- A Sound of Thunder
- The Veldt
- All Summer In a Day

LeahBergen Oh, The Veldt! Yes!!! 👍🏼👍🏼 8y
Melkyl I love teaching these short stories! 8y

When I think of #innocence, it's hard not to flash to #bookishbirthday Ray Bradbury, whose work is infused with an American optimism and innocence (in both children and adults) that flourished in the post-war era: a belief that anything was possible. And Something Wicked is that balance between innocence and darkness, and the time when that all shifts under your feet. These are some of the finest stories of the 20th century. #AugustBookChallenge

rachelm Bradbury for the win? 8y
rachelm And that was supposed to be an exclamation mark. But I guess in true SciFi fashion there should be a lingering question... 8y

Fun Photo Friday II: Literate Boogaloo. This is my home supernatural/weird fiction/occult collection. There's 1/4 shelf more above this. These are all short story anthologies for the most part. It's a life goal of mine to build an epic short story collection...collection.

Liberty Awesome! I just got the new Penzler collection - it's about Jack the Ripper! 9y

Good morning! Hoping to spend a lazy Saturday reading (and housework). On this day in 1917, the Pulitzer Prizes were first awarded. It's a goal of mine to read every winner/finalist, but here are some recent favorites across several categories! (Kavalier & Clay is maybe my favorite of all time.)

rachelm Love K&C! 9y
jeff Second on K&C. Sooo good. 9y
Spiderfelt That is a laudable goal. 9y
