I picked up my first Kenzie book when I was only 19 years old. Gone, Baby, Gone changed my life and Lehane‘s writing turned me into a crime enthusiast. I wish I could say this was the end of an era that was worth it but the characters I love fall flat and the new characters within it are contrived and unbelievable. And worse, unlikeable. Lehane‘s writing is still amazing as always, but for a diehard Kenzie fan, this book didn‘t satiate me at all.
No one knows noir like Lehane. He made me fall in love with grit and crime and neon signs in a black and white world. Nostalgia tastes so good when I read him.
Dollar General did not have cookie cutters as I had hoped, but they DID have a $3 Lehane book so the trip was well worth it! #ihaveabookbuyingproblem
Sadly, I am giving up on this one. It's as though someone told Lehane he needed to make the series "more relatable" (ugh! Hate that concept) or less old fashioned or something and he tried and it just completely wrecked Kenzie's voice. I so enjoyed the series to this point ???
I've always wondered if this was the reference and now I know! (See what I said about them being addictive?)
2017 is becoming a year of firsts. My first Nick Hornby 😕 and now my first Dennis Lehane 👍🏻 which is also making 3 off my TBR shelf so far. This is a good start and I am loving this book!
The last Kenzie and Gennaro book (for now?) and, mercifully, our beloved purveyors of the snappiest banter since Nick and Norah, come through (mostly) unscathed.
Great revisit of their best and most morally complex story, Gone Baby Gone, and it just felt good to see them together and happy.
