A Most Extraordinary Pursuit
A Most Extraordinary Pursuit | Juliana Gray
11 posts | 14 read | 22 to read
Known for her original plots, deft characterization, and lyrical voice, Juliana Gray presents an extraordinary novel of an uncommon pursuit February, 1906. As the personal secretary of the recently departed Duke of Olympiaand a woman of scrupulous characterMiss Emmeline Rose Truelove never expected her duties to involve steaming through the Mediterranean on a private yacht, under the prodigal eye of one Lord Silverton, the most charmingly corrupt bachelor in London. But here they are, improperly bound on a quest to find the dukes enigmatic heir, current whereabouts unknown. An expert on anachronisms, Maximilian Haywood was last seen at an archaeological dig on the island of Crete. And from the moment Truelove and Silverton disembark, they are met with incidents of a suspicious nature: a ransacked flat, a murdered government employee, an assassination attempt. As they travel from port to port on Maxs trail, piecing together the strange events of the days before his disappearance, Truelove will discover the folly of her misconceptionsabout the whims of the heart, the motives of men, and the nature of time itself From the Trade Paperback edition.

Mehso-so

This was a different type of mystery, with elements that confused me (though I‘ve been reading this for a few months with breaks, so I may have forgotten why certain things happen). Truelove reminds me of Amelia Peabody, though I like Peabody a bit more. The ghost of Queen Victoria speaking to Truelove was odd. So-so book for me.

A fun mystery set in the late 19th century. Ms Truelove is sent to Greece to find a missing heir accompanied by the frivolous rake Lord Silverton. Truelove can speak to ghosts and there is an element of magical realism that runs through this book that makes really fun.

I would like to finish re-reading this book this afternoon because I want to get to the 2nd book in the series that came out this past week. I'll see how far I get before Sunday afternoon napping takes over!

Miss Emmeline Truelove (How English is that name?!?) finds herself sent abroad after her employer, the Duke of Olympia, passes away. Her mission? Locate and bring back the new heir who has disappeared on an archaeological dig. Toss in the charming Lord Silverton, a chaperone who's not all that he seems, and an eensy bit of time travel and you'll find yourself deep in this light, fast-paced, banter filled cozy mystery. [First in the series]

'But you're forgetting the main point, Lord Silverton." I said. "The only point. She was in love with Theseus." "Ah, well." He sucked on the pipe. "I can't answer that. But it seems to me if a fellow hasn't the good sense to return a woman's love, she should the devil find herself another chap who will." ❤️ the story & look forward to next installment. I confess myself a bit put out with Lord Silverton in the end.

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks How are these books? I know this is Beatriz William's pseudonym... I love her, but haven't read any of these. Just wondered how they compare... 7y
Christy2318 @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks The only other book of hers I've read so far is Overseas. I think this is more mystery than her other works... 7y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Overseas is the only one I haven't read... did you like it? @Christy2318 (edited) 7y
Christy2318 @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks It was like but not love. I didn't totally love the hero & there were elements of the time travel story that didn't quite work. It was a fun read though. 7y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @Christy2318 it's really low on my list!!! 7y

This is reminding me so much of an Amelia Peabody book. Not as good, of course, but nicely evocative fun.

I'm not sure how to categorize this quirky book. Historical fiction with mystery and intrigue, a bit of romance, a couple of ghosts, and time travel. Overall, enjoyable, and I hope to see more in the series.

What a fun, quirky little read. I love when authors take all the stuff they love and throw it in a book. Adventure, myth, mystery, and romance and it all blends together perfectly. I don't want to say too much because I don't want to spoil the fun, but if you're a fan of Deanna Raybourn, Lauren Willig, and Elizabeth Peters you will totally be charmed by this delightful, quirky little book.

The store's book group meets tonight. While they discuss their books, I get to sit in a corner and read. It's one of the few times this bookseller gets to read at work.

annahenke I just read a PW review of this today. What do you think?? 8y
johnnie_cakes @annahenke I'm about halfway through and it's super fun. It's smack dab in the middle of my historical fiction wheelhouse. 8y
