Little, Big
Little, Big | John Crowley
Little, Big tells the epic story of Smoky Barnable -- an anonymous young man who meets and falls in love with Daily Alice Drinkwater, and goes to live with her in Edgewood, a place not found on any map. In an impossible mansion full of her relatives, who all seem to have ties to another world not far away, Smoky fathers a family and tries to learn what tale he has found himself in -- and how it is to end.

Yet again, I've finished reading this book. Yet again, I'm utterly enchanted by it. Yet again, I'm not really certain what it's about. But it's beautiful. And I'll continue to ponder the story for a long time to come....

#20in4 @Andrew65 Finished my fourth partially-read book this weekend. Decided to read the last chapter rather than listen to the audiobook (hence it taking much less than two hours to get through).

Bizarre, whimsical, often very beautiful Tale which reminded me somewhat of Gaiman. I'm not entirely sure that I totally followed the plot or indeed that I was meant to. It was a bit of a slog at times but overall I enjoyed it.

vivastory I came across a mention of this while browsing the following last night & I def want to read it. Crowley sounds like such an interesting writer! 3y
Kammbia1 I attempted to read Little, Big years ago. I had read his novella, Engine Summer, that I really liked at the time. I need to try Little, Big again. It is considered a modern classic of fantasy that doesn‘t get mentioned a lot. 3y
Clare-Dragonfly I love this book! 3y

I have wanted to read this book ever since I read Ka by John Crowley. Thank you so much, @Bookgoil for sending me this #JolabokaflodSwap gift. I‘m already “sampling” the truffles. My fave! Yum!!!

vivastory Wonderful! I've been meaning to read Crowley forever. 3y
Clare-Dragonfly I love this book! But I‘ve never read anything else by Crowley 😅 3y

This was my #bookspin for September. I started it and I loved the start of the book, but a bit later in it was a bit slowgoing, a bit boring, a bit difficult and I knew someone who I wanted to send this book to. So I've decided to give this book to someone in New Zealand and maybe I will someday find this book again. I hope I'm not missing out on a great story though.
TBR since July 5th. 2015; 538 pages.

Another success on my #tbrbingo!

Unfortunately I didn‘t like the book that much and would‘ve probably DNF‘d it if I hadn‘t purchased it. As is it‘s not going to stay in my collection. I‘m learning that I should really only purchase books I already know I love.

Anyway, this one starts off like it‘s going to be a slow burn family saga with fairies and tarot cards but then basically nothing happens till the end.

More thoughts in comments ⤵️

twohectobooks The ending ALMOST saves it. I kind of get what Crowley is doing here, which is portraying what it would really feel like to be a member of a family that‘s chosen by the fairies to take part in a grand tale. No one would really know what was going on and no one would really want to talk about it either. But I just don‘t think that the way it‘s done really works as a book. Or maybe it just wasn‘t for me. I usually love this sort of thing though? 4y
twohectobooks It reminded me a bit of Mythago Wood, which is better. Still bewildering, no fairies, but things actually happen. 4y

In Little, Big the character Violet Bramble has a special deck of tarot cards that tell the members of the Drinkwater family “the story” as it unfolds.

edited to add:this tarot deck is The Herbal Tarot by Michael Tierra and Candis Cantin.

Happy Rugby World Cup day! I'm so excited for this to start - think I'm going to be a bit distracted from books for the next month! 🙊 🇮🇪
(I did manage to start Little Big today though)

VioletBramble I haven‘t seen that cover before. I‘m re-reading this- I‘m stretching it out for the whole year. It‘s one of my favorites, but definitely not for everyone. 5y

LoverofLit Good as Gone was really great. And interesting setup for telling the story following two storylines. One from present forward and one from present backwards, and they eventually come together to answer the questions you're asking the whole book. 6y

Little, Big is the multi-generational story of a family caught up in a mysterious magical world that they scarcely understand. The ending is worth the wild ride.

❤️ The further in you go, the bigger it gets.

VioletBramble Welcome to Litsy! As you can probably tell by my user name, this is one of my favorite books. 6y
LitterRat Thanks, V. Indeed, I got the name reference and figured, yeh, another die-hard fan like me. Not everyone gets it; they say, “faeries?..” and do an eye roll, even some fantasy readers with whom I‘ve tried to share. Perhaps the non-fans have been wearing mink coats...and thereby, you know, “..taking on the propensities of the animal.” ?I can‘t explain how well the story works, which is probably the sign of any good yarn. 6y

My #colorcollage choice was deeply inspired by my morning coffee (as are many things in my life ☕️).

The tagged book is a #chunkster that‘s been sitting on my TBR shelf forever!

The shoes are stupidly expensive so they‘ll remain a wishlist item for longer than that book will be sitting on my TBR, I imagine. 😉 They‘re from the Etsy shop Faerysteps.

The toy is Moxie‘s, made by fishcakes.net

Thanks for a fun prompt, @JoScho!

Stacy_31 Love your tat! It looks like Max‘s crown from Where the Wild Things Are. 6y

monalyisha @Stacy_31 Thanks! It‘s actually a mother/daughter tattoo. We both got crowns (because we/girls “rule” 😉). I obviously went with a literary design. I‘m thinking of adding a few words below it, from a Mary Oliver poem. The poem is “The Summer Day.” The words are “one”, “wild”, & “precious.” The idea is that it‘d be my “wild wrist.” 😅 (edited) 6y

There is a little girl called Lilac in this novel who is stolen by the fairies and sleeps for 25 years. Now that‘s some sleep!
This is a huge labyrinthine novel, beautifully written but at times I was quite lost. Probably the fairies at work again! And the amazing parts made up for that anyway 😊If you loved the fairy parts of Jonathan Strange this could be just what you need.

Day19 #riotgrams #opposites. The vastest point, the center, the infinity - Faery, where the gigantic heroes ride across endless landscapes and sail sea upon sea and there is no end to possibility - that circle is so tiny it has no doors at all. - Little,Big. This is one of my favorite, non-series, fantasy novels. I love it so much I took my user name, VioletBramble, from one of its characters.

rwmg I thought the name was familiar ☺ 7y

TobeyTheScavengerMonk The cover of my copy is so somber and sepia toned. This one I found online is soooo trippy. It makes it look like this quiet fairy tale is all about Daily Alice and Smokey Barnable just lounging around dropping acid. 8y
