Tell me again why it‘s popular to tell stories in the present tense?

Best time travel story ever! I read this for the first time back when the paperback was $1.75. That was many moons ago. As I‘ve traveled through time (the slow way, and always forward) I‘ve returned to it often. It‘s got a cat! Guess what door it‘s searching for? #oldschoolscifi

Nine Stories | J D Salinger

‘The Laughing Man‘ was the best, imo. Can‘t read any of JD‘s stuff anymore, ‘tho. Joyce Maynard‘s account of her time with him kind of ruined it for me. How can a guy who wrote with such seeming empathy act in such a despicable manner towards another human being. Don‘t trust your heroes, literary or otherwise.

For anyone who found it tough reading, or even boring, but willing to give another go, try the Scott Brick narration.

Meanwhile, anyone care to comment on Marlowe‘s ‘16 stone‘ traveling companion in this passage? He‘s not mentioned again and, when Marlowe reaches the Central, no one there inquires about him.

The movie is forgettable. The book is great. I envy you your first read.

❤️ The further in you go, the bigger it gets.

VioletBramble Welcome to Litsy! As you can probably tell by my user name, this is one of my favorite books. 6y
LitterRat Thanks, V. Indeed, I got the name reference and figured, yeh, another die-hard fan like me. Not everyone gets it; they say, “faeries?..” and do an eye roll, even some fantasy readers with whom I‘ve tried to share. Perhaps the non-fans have been wearing mink coats...and thereby, you know, “..taking on the propensities of the animal.” ?I can‘t explain how well the story works, which is probably the sign of any good yarn. 6y
