Horton Hatches the Egg
Horton Hatches the Egg | Dr. Seuss
12 posts | 54 read | 1 to read
Meet Horton the elephant, one of the most commendable heroes in children's books. "I meant what I said, and I said what I meant. . . . An elephant's faithful, one hundred per cent!" Horton is kind and trustworthy, but unfortunately, the lazy bird Mayzie takes advantage of his good nature when she leaves Horton to watch her unhatched egg. Told with Dr. Seuss's signature rhymes and trademark illustrations, this is a tale that will be enjoyed over and over, by reader and listener alike. And don't miss another delightful tale about this beloved pachyderm: Horton Hears a Who! From the Hardcover edition.

Scochrane26 I‘ve used this book for years with therapy kids. It was recommended by an expert on attachment to use with certain kids. 4y

Any of the other parents on here identify with Mayzie?

Said Mayzie, a lazy bird hatching an egg:
"I'm tired and I'm bored
and I've kinks in my leg
From sitting just sitting here day after day
It's work! How I hate it!
I'd much rather play!
I'd take a vacation, fly off for a rest
If I could find someone to stay on my nest!
If I could find someone, I'd fly away - free..."

Last post of #boardbookbonanza and I couldn't pick just one. I think the Horton books are some of the most important stories for kids. Responsibility, empathy, compassion, awareness of others, all things that Horton teaches. These are staple books for my kids.

An extremist pro-life screed, wherein an innocent Republican (“Elephant”) ignores logic, turning instead to blind religion (“faithful 100%!”). Along the way, we learn that an unborn embryo is more valuable than even the life of the parent — with a literal gun to his head — for whom a split-section choice implies a full-term commitment (“I meant what I said and I said what I meant!”)

I bet Horton won‘t even get to file for child support.

DivineDiana Wow! I need to reread this! 7y

2BR02B This is my boyfriend's favorite Dr. Seuss. I'm going to have to share this interpretation with him and get his take (he's not pro-birth, at all.) 7y
ProfessorBeanbag Hey! Don't write off the Seuss as right wing, the star bellied sneeches is about racism and consumerist exploitation. Awesome perspective though haha 7y

My daughter is auditioning for “Seussical” — the musical at her Middle School — this afternoon, so we were engaging in some character analysis.

Specifically, Horton Hatches The Egg and Thidwick The Bog-Hearted Moose have diametrically opposed morals about what to do when hunters threaten you and the small creatures you are protecting.

My Mother-In-Law has a huge collection of Dr. Seuss books but she's missing Horton Hatches an Egg. I will have to rectify that for Christmas! In the meantime, deviled eggs are my contribution for Thanksgiving dinner. #LitsyCooks

Like The Scopes Trial, attacking Darwinian evolutionary theory from the Right, Horton Hatches The Egg mounts a bizarre broadside in favor of Lamarckism. You won't teach your kids Intelligent Design, but have no problem saying an elephant can imbue its genes on the egg it's sitting on?

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Hahahaha! Maybe it's more nurture than nature? 9y
Carol 😂😂😂😂😂 9y
SistaPip I had a coworker who died her hair red for so long that she was 100% convinced her baby would be a redhead. She wasn't. Nature vs nurture? 9y
Gadfly One of my childhood favourites. Even then I knew the ending was silly but that's a big part of why I loved it. 9y
