#IDLR #InDeathLongReadalong I really enjoyed this contribution to the series. What‘s interesting is I read that this series was originally meant to be a trilogy. It would have ended with the wedding! Instead we‘re up to…what, book 65 or something?? I can‘t wait to see what further growth the characters have and who else joins this crazy cast of characters. A few points to discuss are in the comments:

StayCurious Summerset has a layered and tragic past. Do we think his dislike of Eve stems from the fact that she‘s a cop or from the fact that he could lose a part of Roarke to her? 8mo
StayCurious Eve has a select number of friends that are like family to her. We see how protective she became of Mavis. Do you think if she had to she would have skirted the law and hidden Mavis away using Roarke‘s power? Or would she have stuck by her badge to the end? 8mo
StayCurious Peabody was sorely used in this book by the killer. How do you think she‘ll handle that so early in her career? 8mo
See All 14 Comments
StayCurious Immortality and youth is something that so many people crave, even, it seems, in this futuristic world. Do you think humans should have a finite time on earth? Would you take the drug immortality if you were offered its benefits? 8mo
ShananigansReads @StayCurious I think she would have stuck by the badge. In a way she is the badge and Roarke is helping her figure out she is more than that. But I also think not being able to save Mavis would have broken her in a new and terrible way. 8mo
MrsV I think Summerset‘s dislike is because Eve is a cop, but with him knowing her past, I think he‘ll soften a bit towards her. Eve, I feel would have begrudgingly stuck by the badge with Mavis, and I agree it would have gutted her to do so. (edited) 8mo
Librarybelle I would not take Immortality…it seems the risks outweigh the benefits, if benefits is the right word. I‘d like to think Summerset will thaw over the series. He did have that moment when Eve remembered. As to Mavis, whatever decision Eve would have to make to protect Mavis if she had to skirt the law would be detrimental to Eve. I am so loving this series!! 8mo
willaful !t's so wild that it was supposed to be just three. Though TBH, I think it's gone on way too long!

Summerset shows he has a good heart here. I suspect their relationship will stay pretty much the same but with less real heat under it.

I don't know what Eve would've done. She's shown a willingness to bypass the rules in favor of justice, and letting Mavis take the fall would certainly not be justice. But it would break her either way.
8mo
ShananigansReads @StayCurious I‘d pass on immortality. 8mo
willaful I do believe in a finite time on earth, but then of course I have no choice. Maybe I would feel differently if I did. Certainly I am loathing getting old and facing mortality. 🤬

Poor Peabody. I suspect it will toughen her up but I hope Eve keeps her from feeling like a bad cop. I think she knew all along that he wasn't super interested in her and she wasn't that invested, so that should help.
8mo
StayCurious @willaful I suppose we‘ll see if she keeps covering the same ground or if she keeps it fresh. She has said she‘s not ready to say goodbye to the characters yet - and I guess her publishers bow to her wishes. She is Nora after all haha (edited) 8mo
LiseWorks I don't think Eve would have broken the law to save Mavis, but she would keep trying to help her. I think Summersett has a thing against all cops that is why he distrust her. And that has to do with his daughter. Roarke found who killed her and dealt with it. I am glad Roberts kept writing this series. I am not for immortality. 8mo
TheAromaofBooks That's really interesting about this originally being a trilogy. I can see that now that you say it, because a lot of threads did feel like they got tidied up. I'm interested to see where these characters go next!! I really loved Peabody in this book and felt so bad for her. Casto felt smarmy to me from the beginning because of the way he was flirting with both women. 😑 8mo

Another superb entry in the In Death series! Eve confronts parts of her past and has to prove her bff‘s innocence. I laughed out loud in a couple of parts, and I‘m enjoying how much Eve and even Roarke have grown so far. Cannot wait to see what is in store for them next. #InDeathLongReadalong

#InDeathLongReadalong #IDLR: Mavis gets fired, poor thing and Eve‘s house is taken over by fashionable characters for a night as they target her hair and wardrobe before the wedding.

Eve has a terrible nightmare/memory and finally relives what happened on that final fateful night.

Peabody gets closer to Casto, even though he has shown a bit of flirty interest in Eve.
Eve finds her unknown - the immortal flower -deadly, beautiful and illegal⬇️

StayCurious They nail down Redford - he was planning to make the immortal drug and owned a specimen of the flower. But did he kill Pandora over a deal gone sour? 8mo
ShananigansReads I think Mavis will be okay, but I cannot imagine the nonsense going on at Roarke's house. They must be driving Summerset crazy. Eve's recovered memories caught me off guard for some reason. I'm glad she did what she did, that bastard deserved worse. I do not trust Casto, but I never trust new characters.
8mo

Librarybelle I‘m glad Eve recovered her memory…she can now begin the slow process of healing. How horrifying what she lived through as a child! Overall, I am anxious to finish. Another great addition to the series. 8mo
LiseWorks We are starting to see a little of Peabody 's Character. It is sad that Mavis lost her job. Just goes to show how the employer thought of her. 8mo
MrsV I figured that was going to be the way in regards to Eve‘s past. If she wasn‘t the one, Roarke definitely would. I‘m also glad it brought a little bit more understanding with Somerset, maybe that stick won‘t be so far up his butt now with her. 8mo
TheAromaofBooks I'm really enjoying this one. Like ShananigansReads I'm not sure if I trust Casto, mainly because he seems to be flirting shamelessly with both Eve and Peabody so 😑 A lot of emotions in this week's chapters, but it feels like maybe Eve can finally start to move forward. I loved how supportive everyone was for her. Side note, I think five chapters a week is a great pace for this buddy read!! 8mo

#InDeathLongReadalong #IDLR Ch.6-10: - we finally learn why Roarke keeps Summerset around and it‘s a sad story. I liked catching a glimpse into Roarke‘s past.
At least Mavis is smart enough to have faith in Eve and not blame her for having to arrest her. Hopefully that‘ll hold. ⬇️

StayCurious The illegals cops are eager to make a bust while Eve is looking for the truth. Can she work side by side with Casto? Can she trust him?
More of Eve‘s past is surfacing but she‘s smart enough to talk to Mira about it. Eve knows her two homicides are linked by the mysterious drug. But how to prove it was the same killer and not Mavis?
8mo
willaful Summerset's past is surprising; he seems so haughty. 8mo
See All 10 Comments
CatLass007 @willaful Remember that Summerset was a con man. Con men play a role and this is the role he‘s adopted. 8mo
CatLass007 I can‘t believe Eve finally talked to Mira. Yay Eve. Evidence that personal growth is achieved. (edited) 8mo
LiseWorks How come Casto showed up? I always wonder whe other departments show up on cases 8mo
Librarybelle It was good to read a little bit about Roarke‘s past and Eve‘s visit to Mira. 8mo
willaful @CatLass007 good point! 8mo
TheAromaofBooks I'm really enjoying getting to know these characters better as they reveal more about themselves and their pasts. Even random little things like Eve has never been off-planet and seems a bit terrified of doing so (I would, too!). While I do believe in Eve's integrity, it still seems weird to me that she would be allowed to continue running as primary on a case where she has such a glaring personal connection. 8mo
StayCurious @TheAromaofBooks it‘s almost as if Whitney wants to make up for what happened in the last book 8mo

#IDLR #InDeathLongReadalong ch.1-5 So far, this book has me hooked! Eve is planning her wedding (a bit reluctantly since it requires dress shopping with Mavis) and soon she finds herself in the middle of two complex cases - one where her informant was killed over a new potent and poisonous drug - and one where a tricky love triangle that involves Mavis leaves one woman dead and the other a prime suspect! Whew-we‘re thrown right into it aren‘t we?

LiseWorks We sure are 8mo
Librarybelle I‘m finishing up Glory…hopefully I‘ll be caught up for our next check in next Sunday!! 8mo
See All 14 Comments
MrsV Yep, just like the 1st two books, I‘m hooked pretty early on! 8mo
willaful I think we found the sweet spot in terms of reading/checking in.

What do people think of Eve not recusing herself from Mavis' case. As the reader, we know that she's honorable, but it's pretty iffy.

Also, Eve is slowly getting corrupted -- not by Roarke's money, but by his connection and access. Do you think the series will ever truly reckon with this?
(edited) 8mo
StayCurious @willaful she is starting to cross lines it‘s true. Is getting justice worth the risk? And I think in terms of Mavis‘ case, she‘s desperate to prove her innocence but realistically she‘s too close to it. 8mo
LiseWorks @willaful I don't think Eve is getting corrupted because of Rourke. It's more Roarke is getting straighter as he made sure to get rid of iffy business dealings early on in the relationship in book 2. In Mavis' case, she is really making sure she is by the book. Even Whitney can see the reason she wants to stay on the case. Again, I am referring to book 2 with the last case. 8mo
TheAromaofBooks I'm with Eve on the wedding planning... my husband and I eloped 😂 The mystery really hooked me right away this time. I'm worried for Mavis!! 8mo
CatLass007 I‘m about a third of the way into this book. I‘m not usually good at figuring things out along with the detective but I have a theory about who the killer was. 8mo
CatLass007 I think it was the Illegals cop who is so hot to look at. I think he killed both victims so he could get his hands on the new drug. 8mo
CatLass007 @StayCurious after book 7, Holiday in Death, there is a book 7.5, Midnight in Death. Will we be reading and discussing the “in-between” books also? 8mo
StayCurious @CatLass007 yes we had planned on it. 8mo
CatLass007 Okay. Cool. I wasn‘t sure. I‘m over halfway through Immortal In Death and I‘m already in possession of next month‘s book. I‘m definitely enjoying this third book in the series. Lots of character growth. 8mo
CatLass007 Welp, I just finished this book and my theory about the identity of the killer was correct. I don‘t solve mysteries very often so I like to brag about it when I do. 📣 Yay me! 8mo

This is the third book in this series, and the last one available at the library, so I‘m going to have to stop here for a while. It‘s been so many years since I read this series that it‘s like new! I had forgotten that it starts off in the year 2058, so that adds a fun twist as well. The three I‘ve read have helped me enormously this month, as I‘ve had a hard time concentrating the last couple weeks. Great series, which I‘ll definitely continue.

Low pick for this one because I enjoyed my time with it but the characters are flattening out and not having as much growth. The mystery was solid but easy to guess because like tv shows you know the guest star is probably the one who did it. I will read on in the series though because I enjoy the characters and the world.

These are good reads but I don‘t quite see the hype.

wanderinglynn I think they‘re hyped because it‘s Nora Roberts. But these books are formulaic and unrealistic (that she *always* solves every case & every case seems to be high profile). They‘re super easy reads. I still find them fun & I like seeing the relationships develop. (edited) 3y
Andrew65 @wanderinglynn I wondered if it was this. I wish she‘d lay off the sex as that isn‘t needed IMHO. 3y
wanderinglynn She has to fill the pages 😉😆 I agree & usually skim those paragraphs. 3y

rubyslippersreads I knew a woman who loved this series so much, she would buy the book after work on the release date, and then call in sick the next day so she could spend all reading it. 😂 3y
KellyK I binged the series after my book club read Connections in Death a few years ago. They are easy reads and I enjoy the different personalities of the characters but they definitely aren‘t great literary works. 🤦🏻 3y
BookwormM I love them for the humour and the developing relationships also is there a fictional detective who doesn‘t solve every case can‘t recall that happening in any of the series I read @wanderinglynn I am genuinely interested not being sarcastic 3y

I didn‘t dislike Rourke nearly as much in this one as I did in the previous two books. The book was good. This was probably a similar rating as what I gave the first two books, I think. Decent story, but nothing overly special. I was surprised at the ending. Will I continue the series? I suppose I probably will, at least for now. They are quick to read.
