Fiction. Women's Studies. "Joanna Walsh's haunting and unforgettable stories enact a literal vertigo the feeling that if I fall I will fall not toward the earth but into space by probing the spaces between things. Waiting for news in a children's hospital, pondering her husband's multiple online flirtations or observing the tourists and locals at a third-world archeological site, her narrator approaches the suppressed state of panic coursing beneath things that are normally tamed by our blunted perceptions of ordinary life. VERTIGO is an original and breathtaking book." Chris Kraus "With wry humor and profound sensitivity, Walsh takes what is mundane and transforms it into something otherworldly with sentences that can make your heart stop. A feat of language." Kirkus, starred review "Walsh's penetrating short story collection evokes the titular feeling of dizziness... these stories offer a compelling pitch into the inner life." Publishers Weekly"

Of late, I have been drawn to more “literary” or “challenging” books and this one certainly challenged me! These stories are spare and minimalist and require work of the reader. All of them deal with the lives and experiences of women and the way they interact with the world, in ways both big and small. While some of the stories were opaque in their meaning, I think this is a book that would be served well by being re-read.

Suet624 Sounds intriguing. 5d

So after a crazy day yesterday (where I ended up at the ER for a couple hours suffering from vertigo), I was able to have a relaxing day full of rest. Unfortunately no reading since I didn't want to push it even with feeling better. I did get an audio copy of Jane Eyre though so I can hopefully get caught up on the #janeeyrebuddyread

Mollyanna Feel better soon! 7y
TheDaysGoBy @Mollyanna Thank you! 7y
dariazeoli Hope you‘re feeling better! 5ish years ago I fainted at work. A few hours in the ER and they were stumped; the next day my doc diagnosed vertigo. Not fun! 7y

TheDaysGoBy @dariazeoli Thank you! It's not too bad. The meds are helping but I'm still feeling off center. Anything is better than before though. I had my coworkers all worried just leaving early - I can only imagine how yours reacted when you fainted 😧 Yours sounded scarier than mine lol 7y
megt Hope you‘re feeling better soon! Vertigo sucks. ☹️ 7y
TheDaysGoBy @megt Thank you! I am feeling better. Slowly but surely 7y

I have such severe vertigo from Lyme Disease that I can't focus on anything without getting sick. Looks like I may be stuck on audiobooks for a while.😢

Reviewsbylola Oh no! I've had a very mild case of vertigo recently. I can't imagine how much worse it could be. I hope you find relief soon! 7y
awishman I'm sorry to hear that. My mom has an eye condition that prevents reading except for audio books. Do you have access to some good ones? 7y
monkeygirlsmama Oh, what a horrible thing to deal with. ((( Huge hugs ))) On the plus side, at least you have the audiobook option. Loads of good ones out there; hope you find some! Prayers, btw, for the vertigo to lessen and quit giving you such hassle. 💟 7y

cephareads @awishman I started using the Libby app to see what my library has. It's not the most stellar selection but it'll do! 7y

cephareads @Suet624 thank you! I was diagnosed in 2012 but haven't had treatment in a few years thanks to terrible health insurance. 👎 7y

Am I posting too much? Lazy reading day and I like the fragmented style of this author.

saresmoore This is so stream-of-consciousness, but also ridiculously true to life. I think I would love this. 8y
ReadingEnvy @saresmoore almost all of it is internal dialogue which I tend to like! 8y
batsy The writing is so good but I didn't love this & I don't know why. 8y

First book done! This is a glacial collection of stories that are admirable in their intelligence, coolness, and reserve. But these are minimalist, tidy, self-contained stories, and while they are worth reading for the writing and the manner in which they coolly probe the anxieties that underlies social relations, they were not capacious or generous. And so while I admired this book, I did not love it. #LitsyAtoZ #deweys24hourreadathon
