The Day the Crayons Came Home
The Day the Crayons Came Home | Drew Daywalt
23 posts | 54 read | 13 to read
The companion to the #1 blockbuster bestseller, The Day the Crayons Quit! Highly anticipated (yes, even for adults) Entertainment Weekly I'm not sure what it is about this kid Duncan, but his crayons sure are a colorful bunch of characters! Having soothed the hurt feelings of one group who threatened to quit, Duncan now faces a whole new group of crayons asking to be rescued. From Maroon Crayon, who was lost beneath the sofa cushions and then broken in two after Dad sat on him; to poor Turquoise, whose head is now stuck to one of Duncan's stinky socks after they both ended up in the dryer together; to Pea Green, who knows darn well that no kid likes peas and who ran awayeach and every crayon has a woeful tale to tell and a plea to be brought home to the crayon box. Praise for The Day the Crayons Came Home "Mr. Daywalts text blends with Mr. Jefferss illustrations to make a picture book that will have children clamoring for more crayon adventures."The Wall Street Journal * "A masterwork of humor and design . . . This is the sequel to the book The Day the Crayons Quit, this book is all about where the crayons went and how they are making their way back to Duncan. However, all the crayons have a story of what happened when they were away from Duncan.

This is the cutest, entertaining F book for young learners. Each color is a unique character that needs to be saved by their owner, Duncan. This is such a good book for a PR in the classroom, AND it also glows in the dark which makes it even better!
This book is the winner of over 60 national and international awards, including the coveted E.B. White Read-Aloud Award.

Laugh out loud funny for children and adults!

While it is a sequel book to The Day the Crayons Quit, it can also 100% stand alone, and can also be read more than once! My class has heard it at least ten times, and still do not tire of it.

The crayons are all frustrated with the way Duncan has treated them but have decided they want to be home... illustrations in this children‘s book are top notch!

WanderingBookaneer One of my all-time favorite picture books. 6y
BookishMadHatter My daughters adore this book, and the first one too. 6y

I HAD to read the sequel, The Day the Crayons Came Home (F, Goodreads Choice Award) by Drew Daywalt and illustrated by Oliver Jeffers. I love how this follows the same letter-writing format, but follows the same bunch of crayons over a storyline. So I figured, why not have my students do it? #LAE3414sp19

cwright http://www.readwritethink.org/files/resources/printouts/narrative-pyramid.pdf After a RA, I would have mixed-level small groups write either as themselves or a related group of objects, animals, etc. to one recipient about a unified problem, filling out the pyramid together. Then, they would come up with three events leading up to the same conclusion. For each event, each student would write one letter. ESOL 2, 7, 16 UDL 7.1, 8.3, 3.2 (edited) 6y
giont I need to read this! I loved the first book. I love your idea of having different groups write to each other. I feel like this would be so much fun for students, I‘m also curious as to what they come up with! I‘m gonna keep this idea in mind, thanks for sharing :) 6y
Ms.Bursey I HAD to write about this book on my litsy post it‘s just so needed! I love this book so much. It‘s just so cute, funny and entertaining. 6y
DrSpalding You need to be sure to explain the principles and strategies. What a wonderful resource that could be used with many books. 6y

#TimbitTunes Day 16: #CarryMeHome says these wandering crayons. The story consists of a series of postcards sent by crayons who happen to be missing, left to melt out in the sun, or lost in the basement. I like the idea of an ode to the forgotten, the misplaced, the broken crayons who are asking to be rediscovered. My review: https://wp.me/pDlzr-j2m

Cinfhen I read this to my niece,LuLu last year!! She loved it and it‘s absolutely adorable 🖍🧡great pick 6y

I found this book after really enjoying hearing the first one in class. This is a sequel to the book The Day the Crayons Quit. I love this book and finding out more about why certain crayons weren‘t happy with Duncan. Read the story to find out about new crayons like Neon Red and Pea Green and what they‘ve been up to since leaving Duncan‘s crayon box. It‘s such a cute follow up to the first book. #UCFLAE3414

sboynt This would be a great pick for a classroom RA. Along with other strategies like S, RT, IR and PR. TPT has a great lesson for teachers to do a writing lesson related to this story. https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/The-Day-the-Crayons-Came-Home-204442... 7y
sboynt ESOL 30 and encouraging the use of drawing to identify concepts and relationships could be very helpful for understanding this story. UDL 1.2 and offering alternatives for auditory information can be utilized through the pictures in the story that display the text that is being read in the RA. 7y
kylamarie5 I love this book and the day the crayons quit! They are awesome books for kids to read. I just love how funny they are. 7y
SadiqaH I love this book and I think it is great for RA. They way crayons expressed themselves is very funny. Great choice. 7y

I would use this Modern Fantasy (F) book for a Read Aloud (RA). It‘s a story about crayons who got lost, forgotten and broken that now want to go back home to their owner. This is such a cute book that can show students feelings in a fun way. It goes along with the book The Day the Crayons Quit. This book has won the Goodreads Choice Awards Best Picture Book.

kylamarie5 This is a video of the book being read aloud. The speaker has some great questions for students before they read the book. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=KTNJnOQLJ0Q

UDL: 3.1- Activate or supply background knowledge and 3.3- Guide information processing, visualization, and manipulation
EL: 11- Place language in meaningful context and 14- Simplify your speech by making it slower and redundant
7y
WendyV I‘ve never heard of this book before but I actually added it to my list of books the other day to find, along with The Day the Crayons Quit. Thanks for adding the YouTube video, it was a great link! 7y
DrSpalding Nice resource that includes pre-reading strategies. I will share the prequel to the story. Excellent choice! It has been on the New York Times bestseller‘s list. 7y
morganhillman This sounds like an awesome book!! I loved the link you provided because it was really interactive and had some great pre-questions. Your UDL and ELs are perfect for this book! 7y

This is such a cute fiction PB about crayons that won the goodreads choice award best picture books. These crayons are all over the world writing to their owner Duncan who has either used them to much or haven‘t used the color at all. They all want to be used and respected for the color that they are. This would be the perfect book for storytelling because while telling the story you can give each of the crayons their own voice.

Samantha.K The UDL I would use is 1.2 offer alternatives for auditory information. The ESOL strategy I would use is 16 integrate speaking, listening, reading, and writing activities. http://www.teachingideas.co.uk/library/books/the-day-the-crayons-came-home this takes you to a page that has many activities that you could do in all the subject areas. #ucflae3414f17 (edited) 7y

The Day the Crayons Came Home is an amazing follow up to The Day the Crayons Quit. It is written by Drew Daywalt and illustrated by Oliver Jeffers. This Goodreads Choice Awards Best Picture Books winner is about the crayons coming back home and all of the things that they have experienced will away. This book would be great to read aloud (RA) to the class. #UCFLAE3414F17

laurie_jayy http://www.teachingideas.co.uk/library/books/the-day-the-crayons-came-home links to a lesson plan that includes math, science, and technology.
UDL 3.1 “Activate or supply background knowledge.” The background knowledge that the students would be provided with is The Day the Crayons Quit.
7y
laurie_jayy EL 45. “Use Venn diagrams to contrast and compare activities” is a great EL to use because students can calorie and contrast this book with it‘s predecessor. 7y
EricaG I love this book and I love your idea to use it to compare and contrast with the first book! 7y

The Day the Crayons Came Home is a sequel to The Day the Crayons Quit. It is a F PB written and illustrated by Drew Daywalt and Oliver Jeffers that I would use as a RA. This book was definitely just as fun as the first one and I think it would be a great book to have in the classroom. I love the personification and so will the students.

jasminep This website http://www.crayonspicturebooks.com/day-crayons-quit-activities/ takes you to the authors‘ website where they have lesson plans and activities that go with the book. The UDL I would use is 3.2  which is highlight patterns, critical features, big ideas, and relationships because although the pages cover different topics they all have big ideas and there‘s definitely a pattern in the writing. 7y
jasminep I would use ESOL strategy 24 which is incorporate the culture and the language of second language learners in your curriculum because this books covers a lot of colors which is are easy translate in just about any language. Then the EL learners would learn as well the English speaking students.  #UCFLAE3414F17 7y

Book mail woohoo! Only one thing for me... nah who am I kidding whilst I'm reading the bed time stories I'm choosing the bed time stories! Excited to see what the crayons have been up to, what Julia and Axel's new book is like and I think my little boy will be very excited by the real letters and postcards inside Dear Dinosaur (that ones going away for Xmas!) Even more excited about Ghosts it's been on my TBR for ages!!

Ada: "The crayons leave home, but then they feel bad and go back. A lot of funny stuff happens while they try to go home. The neon red crayon doesn't know much about other cities, so she doesn't know where she is. I've been to other places before – like grandma's house in Idaho. If I could go anywhere, I would go to Spain."

I was never a big fan of the Day the Crayons Quit, but this book might make me a convert. Duncan‘s crayons have sent him postcards because they want to come home. These postcards are pretty funny too. The only downturn for this book is that it's a little too long to read for story time. However, I could see a great program with old post cards and crayons.
