The Sunday Philosophy Club
The Sunday Philosophy Club | Alexander McCall Smith
Introducing the new series from the international bestselling author of The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency books the Sunday Philosophy Club series is set in Edinburgh, Scotland, and stars Isabel Dalhousie, editor of The Review of Applied Ethics and part-time detective. Isabel enjoys wading through the mysteries of life, everything from the mornings crossword to higher philosophical dilemmas, often with the advice of her ethically upright housekeeper, Grace. In this first novel of the series, Isabel witnesses a young man plunge to his death from the upper balcony of the Edinburgh Concert Hall. When Isabel discovers that the young victim had uncovered illicit activities at the brokerage house where he worked, the hunt for answers, and the killer, is on. This new series is a delightful look at a reasonable and logical woman who keeps getting involved in mysteries despite all reason and logic. From the Hardcover edition.

What else could a girl possibly require than a Scotsman who looked Mediterranean and could sing? The answer came to her unbidden, like an awkward truth that nudges one at the wrong moment...We do not like those are completely available, who make themselves over to us entirely. They crowd us out. They make us feel uneasy.

quote

The Sunday Philosophy Club | Alexander McCall Smith

When the beautiful died, it was the same as when the less well blessed died; that was obvious. But why did it seem more tragic that Rupert Brooke, or Byron for that matter, should die, than other young men? Perhaps it was because we love the beautiful more; or because Death's momentary victory is all the greater. Nobody, he says, smiling, is too beautiful not to be taken by me.

quote

America went to his head. He said that it freed him up. I've heard that normally cautious people can go quite mad there, just from feeling free of whatever it was that was holding them back at home. He was like that. He drank more, he had more girlfriends, and he was more impetuous.

quote
tokorowilliamwallace
The Sunday Philosophy Club | Alexander McCall Smith

Grace's world was very clear: there was Edinburgh, and the values which Edinburgh endorsed; and then there were the rest. It went without saying that Edinburgh was right, and that the best that could be hoped for was that those who looked at things differently would eventually come round to the right way of thinking...still firmly planted in...the world of douce Edinburgh, erected on rigid hierarchies, deep convictions of Scottish Presbyterianism.

quote
tokorowilliamwallace
The Sunday Philosophy Club | Alexander McCall Smith

She was used to notes like that from Grace: messages would be conveyed with a gloss on the character of those involved...Grace was rarely wrong about character, and her judgments were devastating. They were often of the one-word variety: cheat, she would say about somebody, or crook, or drunkard. If her views were positive, they might be slightly longer---most generous, or really kind---but these plaudits were hard to earn.

Day 7: #20series20days #top20series

My favorite Alexander McCall Smith series. I love Isabel, Jamie, Eddie, even Isabel‘s niece, Cat. These are listed as a mystery, but they are more than that. Isabel‘s internal dialogues are intriguing and thought provoking.

Andrew65 Not read these yet but love his other series. You may have just prompted me! 4y
Mollyanna @Andrew65 I really like the No. 1 Ladies Detective series too. This one just has something... Isabel drives a lot of people crazy, but I get her ☺️ 4y
Andrew65 I also enjoy the 44 Scotland Street Series. 4y

Mollyanna @Andrew65 I‘ll have to add that one to my list 😊 4y
Andrew65 @Mollyanna Hope you enjoy it. It is set in Edinburgh and first book or two was initially written to be serialised each day in a Scottish newspaper. 4y
Mollyanna @Andrew65 Sounds very interesting! I‘m looking forward to reading them. 4y

I liked this better the second time round: first time he needled me with negative comment about my old university! I think all Alexander McCall Smith‘s books are a vehicle for his gentle observations on how society‘s changed (often not for the better). Isabel Dalhousie‘s world is rarified and it‘s hard not to be a bit jealous of her, so it‘s almost brave but honest of AMS to have her as a protagonist. Interesting he chooses women as protagonists.

#QuotsyJune19 Day 4: sharp-tongued #spinster is the way to be.
I have a stack of Alexander McCall Smith novels that I have yet to read. For those who have read him, which book do you recommend I start with?

AlaMich The only series of his I enjoy is No. 1 Ladies...Isabel Dalhousie is boring, IMO, though 44 Scotland Street isn‘t bad. 5y
gradcat I like all of his books, in varying degrees. But I must admit I did read three of the Isabel Dalhousie series, so I guess I liked them well enough! 😂 5y

This is the first in the Isabel Dalhousie mystery series and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I realized, belatedly, and distractedly, that it is actually set in modern day Scotland (early 2000s), but because of the writing style, one can be easily convinced, at first, that this takes place in the early 1900s. Nonetheless, it is a good mystery with a small twist at the end. Series ❤️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #BoB23IGPhoto #24B4Monday @TheReadingMermaid

#backpackeurope travelogue @JenP *fictional*

Country 2: next up on my list was Scotland. While I didn't see any murders in Edinburgh like the heroine of my book did, I saw plenty of tartan and wool! I decided against the haggis. I also listened a bit to Harry Potter on audiobook and imagined taking the Hogwarts Express through the Scottish countryside.
I love Alexander McCall Smith but this book wasnt my cup of tea. Dalhousie needed more to do.

#backtoreading #anditsaugust #recommendationsday Day 21.

I seem to have acquired a lot of Alexander McCall Smith's books over the years. I love all of his series, except the Scotland Streets ones and only because I haven't read them. I heartily recommend this author to you. He's also an extremely engaging speaker and man.

Any Germans here, who can shed some light on this, or will I have to spend the evening googling "Germany potato cutlery 1800s"? ? And for that matter, why shouldn't one use a knife on a bread roll?

julesG That's baffling. Never heard about not using a knife on a potato. But will try my best to find out. 8y
tricours I found this: "In Germany, one never dines with his hands. Utensils, such as a fork and knife, is always used at mealtimes. Also, do not insult your host by using a knife to cut the boiled potates – instead, use the side of a fork, for usage of the knife would imply that the boiled potatoes are not tender and well-cooked. Put this into practice when you dine in Germany!" @Sarah83 ? 8y
Moray_Reads @tricours good find! That actually makes a kind of weird sense 8y
See All 16 Comments
julesG @tricours - similar to what I found but I've also found a more reasonable explanation. Most cutlery, especially with the more well-off, was made of silver. Silver would tarnish when you cut potatoes with it, hence you were supposed to use the side of the fork. As for using your hands. In the 18th and 19th century using the hands was frowned upon, even when trying to eat a chicken leg. 8y
julesG @Moray_Reads @tricours I think my grandmother failed to drum this into me. I'm quite sure she tried her best, though. 8y
Sarah83 @tricours @julesG @Moray_Reads I found the same as Julia. And I also remember, that we did it like that at my grandma's dinners. But I don't find in the web, why the forks where made of another material than knives. 🙁 8y
Sarah83 @tricours @julesG @Moray_Reads And the story with the bread is this one: Bread isn't cut into pieces but you take the bread and break it with your hands. The knife is only for the butter and the cheese (as Knigge says). 😉 8y
Leniverse Huh. Thanks! Lots of interesting info! Now I'm obsessed with knowing why only knives were silver. 😂 And, speaking as a Norwegian, a butter knife is a separate piece of cutlery again, frequently made of wood and definitely too blunt to cut anything! Also, sometimes potatoes should have a bit of resistance to them, and not mash too easily! (National potato and (butter) knife differences) 😂 @julesG @tricours @Moray_Reads @Sarah83 8y
Moray_Reads @Leniverse @Sarah83 @tricours @julesG maybe because you put the fork in your mouth but not the knife? Would that make a silver fork more likely to tarnish? 8y
Leniverse @Moray_Reads Oh. Yes, that makes sense. Seems a bit silly to use silver at all... don't get it near your mouth, don't let it touch the potatoes! And probably a series of other foodstuffs. 8y
Sarah83 @tricours @Moray_Reads @julesG Well I think I should read Knigge and then translate it to you. 😉 8y
Sarah83 Another funny fact is, that I ordered the book you are reading two hours ago. 😆 8y
Leniverse @Sarah83 Yes, do translate Knigge for us! I'm fascinated. As for the book I'm reading, it's starting to grow on me a bit, but I'm not convinced I'll be recommending it. 😕 8y
Sarah83 You don't have to. I already ordered it. 😉 maybe I find a website; where this already done. 😉 8y
julesG @Sarah83 @tricours @Moray_Reads Forks were made of silver, too. They were easier to clean and to polish than knives. You were supposed to see yourself in the tiny mirror of the knife's blade, hence they had to be polished vigorously. Remember the butler and footmen in Downton Abbey always wearing white gloves? One of the reasons for this was not leaving finger prints on the cutlery when setting the table. 8y

Because being a wine snob is so much worse than being a snob about classical music, paintings, poetry, and food. 🙄I am actually surprised Isabel isn't a wine snob as well, but I guess she needs to have some types of snobbery to look down on and be snobbish about. 😏

saresmoore Hahaha! 8y
julesG Gets better and better. Guess I should read this book one day. 8y
Leniverse @julesG I don't know... so far this has none of the charm of the Ladies No. 1 series. And as wealthy, white, 40ish, female sleuths go, I just started watching the Miss Fisher mysteries the other day, and though she's just a bit to unbelievably skilled at everything, I'd rather hang out with her any day! 8y

Say what!? 😒The people of Iceland did not come from Danes! *grumble* I hope Mr. Cleft Chin sets her straight.
And for that matter, why don't we dwell on the generations of hardy Scotsmen (and ditto women) who resulted in Isabel Dalhousie sitting all smug with her opera glasses wondering (on the previous page) if Reykjavik actually had a professional symphony orchestra, or if they would turn out to be amateurs. Snob.

tricours Oh, Scandinavians are all the same, aren't they? Let's throw in some Finns too 😁 8y
julesG Bunch of Norsemen: tall, broad shoulders, long blond hair, grey/blue/green eyes. :))) 8y
Martta We might look the same but our origins are different. For example Swedish and Norwegian people have much more diverse backgrounds than Finns do because they have sailed around the seas for hundreds and hundreds of years. In Finns there are a lot of eastern blood (meaning we have a lot of genes from Russia). 8y
See All 10 Comments
Leniverse @Martta Are you commenting to me or to @julesG ? I am very aware of the difference, being Norwegian myself. 🙂And @tricours was being ironic. Which might have been the intention of julesG as well. 🤔 8y
Martta @Leniverse Just commenting on general to the discussion. Got the irony. 😊 8y
Martta I thought you might be from one of the Scandinavian countries. Your name is very Swedish/Norwegian/Dannish sounding. 8y
Leniverse @Martta Yes, I have a -sen name that every single person in the UK automatically writes as a -son name, no matter how many times I point it out to them. 🙄Swedes have it easier! 😆 8y
Martta @Leniverse ? You should try having a "ä" in the name. That's just pure agony to try to guess how my name is pronounced each time. It's usually different everytime. My first name is not so bad since English speaking countries have similar version of it but these countries like to use people's last names a lot so it can get very interesting. 8y
julesG @Martta Yes, tried to be ironic, forgot to tag @tricours. 8y
tricours Swedes can have name problems too! Norwegians can't handle my name, "Rebecka" is a very difficult spelling for most. The worst I've gotten is Rebbeka I think. 8y

Yawn. So many dead ends and pages upon pages of unsatisfying philosophical randomness for a mystery with an out of the blue finale. Stilted dialogue; the best characters are ignored. Very unlikely to keep going with this series.

#laidbackbooks - For several years, I had the tradition of reading an Isabel Dalhousie mystery around the holidays. These are lovely reads for busy times, easy to dip into & out of and back into again, when life is full of interruptions. They helped me focus on taking it easy and enjoying the time with family. (Because going without reading is not an option! 😉) #augustofpages #bookphotochallenge
