A witch in this book would #Disguise herself as a normal woman. A fun spooky read & the movies (1990 & 2020) are good & pretty scary too. 🪄🖤

I think 9yo me would have read this a hundred times because I was dark AF as a kid. And that is what this book is--dark AF. And I don't think I'm at a particular point right now where I want dark kidlit. This book didn't completely work for me, although there are some things I liked.
I did like Grandmamma. She is a badass. I kind of want a retelling from her pov.
“Grandmamma loves to tell about witches. Real witches are the most dangerous of all living creatures on earth. There's nothing they hate so much as children, and they work all kinds of terrifying spells to get rid of them. Her grandson listens closely to Grandmamma's stories—but nothing can prepare him for the day he comes face-to-face with The Grand High Witch herself!”

Started the #pumpkinspicereadathon by reading the tagged book. Just the perfect classic for this time of year. Got my new pumpkin spice candle ready too.

Going into this, I just knew that it was on the ALA‘s most challenged list from the 1990s, not why it was on the list. As I read it, I kept thinking “sure can tell this was written by a man”. So, to see that it was banned by some libraries for misogyny is no surprise at all. I did not enjoy it, but I suspect that‘s more of an age-issue than a text issue. I probably would have liked it when I was the target age, but I wouldn‘t read it to kids now.
#MayMontage Day 22: #GlovesOnCover. As Iphigene wrote in her comprehensive review: “It is the seemingly (or supposedly) dark, cruel and violent story that makes these moments stand out and makes the point even more poignant and even more profound. After all, we only do appreciate the good things in life when we‘ve seen the ugliness it has to offer.” More here: https://wp.me/pDlzr-2fO
My tradition for several years has been to read this the day before Halloween. I love this story so much and it never fails to put me in a great mood.
Roald Dahl will forever be one of the reasons my childlike wonderment will never die. 💚
If you have kids, this is a great one to read together as a family.

I loved the relationship between grandmother and grandson. I had never read this or seen the movie (will watch it this week). I loved the way the witches are portrayed and dealt with as well. Overall, very good read.
Other book is on my TBR and good for #blackcat #ScarathlonDailyPrompts #Scarathlon2022 #TeamMonsterMash
Make a great day everyone 🎃🧙

Managed to only hit one of my goals this week but I did make it to about 50% of Wizard of Earthsea so I still made some progress.

My goal this week is to finish WoE and then start practicing my Spanish by reading Las Brujas. One of the branches where I work has all the Dahl classics translated in Spanish which I thought would be fun to try out.
It took me until just after 3 am to finish Pet Sematary, and by then I was ready for sleep. So I didn't get to the tagged book for #readathon but I'm starting it now
“It doesn't matter who you are or what you look like so long as somebody loves you.“
This is a great example of speculative fiction that allows the students to problem solve how they would help to save the day.
This story has an ominous tone as it talks about a conference of witches that plan to rule the world. This story allows students think about what would happens and how to learn how to use their imagination more.
I just loved this movie as a kid, and spent a great deal of the year (1990) seeing if I could discover any witches in my small WI town. 😂 Dahl disliked the change to the ending change from his book (which is a bit darker), but I can‘t wait for my kiddos to read this someday! #scarathlondailyprompts #witch #teamslaughter

A young orphan boy now lives with his grandmother and she tells him all about the legend of the witches. The once legend becomes a reality for the boy when he comes face-to-face with them in a hotel. This chapter book is perfect near halloween and will have students on the edge of their seats. Great book for upper elementary!
I have read and watched this movie every October since the movie came out in 1990. Love them both! Halloween isn't Halloween until I've revisited them both.

It‘s probably a littttle early to kick off the Halloween season, but the grocery store is already full of pumpkins and candy corn, so why shouldn‘t we get a head start on all things spooky on my pod, too? It‘s Episode 206 of my book podcast and my first time ever reading THE WITCHES by Roald Dahl. Author Amanda Aksel is on the show for a discussion about what makes something too dark for kids, adaptations, and more. Link to listen in my bio!
My daughter's pick from yesterday's Waterstones visit. She picked this one because of the cool green page edges - she's learning!!! 🤣🤣🤣
I loved this movie as a child, but I have never read it. I think it‘s about time to correct that!
Another great book by Roald Dahl! I started this one with my kids a couple of times and couldn‘t get past the introduction because it was too scary until now. My daughter had watched the movie on a plane and was able to tell my other children not to worry, because it all works out in the end. She also enjoyed the differences and telling me about them. We all enjoyed reading this one together.
Part of the 1982-2022 reading challenge I give you The Witches by Roald Dahl published in 1983. It was a cute read and apparently it‘s being turned into movie soon. #19822022 @Librarybelle
Received my #basicwitchswap package! Now to just sit and stare at it until opening day. I can‘t tell who sent this yet but I think I saw this packaging in the hashtag, so will come back and add! Looking forward to opening day! @sprainedbrain @mklong
I think I had an amused grin on my face for a lot of this listen! Such a cute and weird little story!

The was an absolute hoot! It was quirky and one of the more unique things I‘ve read (or listened to). This is the first time I‘ve read anything by Dahl and I‘ll be sure to read more of his novels in the future!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Anyone who wants to ban this for “perceived misogyny” because all the witches are female can GTFO. These are silly fictional characters for god‘s sake! So what if they‘re all women for the purpose of this story? Anyway, this was creepy and fun! Incognito child-hating LADY witches are plotting to turn all of England‘s kids into mice in hopes it will lead to their demise without implicating the witches. That is, until the tables turn.
4? "It doesn't matter who you are or what you look like so long as someone loves you." This is a great tale that I have only come to enjoy more as an adult. It is a dark story at times but has plenty of heart to balance it out.

Watching The Witches while I visit my mom. This was a favorite of ours when I was growing up, and I still love it. This meets my Scare Pair goal for #Screamathon as well. @4thhouseontheleft
