SHORTLISTED for the 2011 Man Booker Prize for Fiction An intense psychological drama that echoes sophisticated entertainments like Gorky Park and The Talented Mr. Ripley. Nick Platt is a British lawyer working in Moscow in the early 2000sa place where the cascade of oil money, the tightening grip of the government, the jostling of the oligarchs, and the loosening of Soviet social mores have led to a culture where corruption, decadence, violence, and betrayal define everyday life. Nick doesnt ask too many questions about the shady deals he works onhes too busy enjoying the exotic, surreally sinful nightlife Moscow has to offer. One day in the subway, he rescues two willowy sisters, Masha and Katya, from a would-be purse snatcher. Soon Nick, the seductive Masha, and long-limbed Katya are cruising the seamy glamour spots of the city. Nick begins to feel something for Masha that he is pleased to think is love. Then the sisters ask Nick to help their aged aunt, Tatiana, find a new apartment. Of course, nothing is as it seemsincluding this extraordinary debut novel. The twists in the story take it far beyond its noirish framethe sordid and vivid portrayal of Moscow serves as a backdrop for a book that examines the irresistible allure of sin, featuring characters whose hearts are as cold as the Russian winter. From the Hardcover edition.

An English lawyer in Moscow finds himself at the centre of two elaborate con tricks at extreme ends of the scale. Told in the form of a letter to his new partner its a confession by a man who knows he has morally crossed a rubicon making for a very unlikeable character but a bk I found i wanted to read despite how obvious the scam was .
Great sense of place + enjyd the moral dilemma.
A bit late for snowdrops so daisys will have to do.

Cathythoughts Daisys are lovely 3y

It's snowing so hard right now that I can't even see the lake, let alone the sleeping giant. I suppose I'll take the bus today instead of walking. 🙄 #Ontario #canada

Dear Litsy, I miss you so much. I was stopped in my tracks this past month, as so many of us were, and barely posted the last two weeks. I read a paltry 4 books only in November. Here's planning on a better December, with more reading hours! #wanttoreadindec #seasonsreading2016 I know I can still reach my 100 book goal for the year.

valeriegeary What an excellent stack to dive into this month. Happy you're back! 8y

Atmospheric crime story set in Moscow: 'snowdrop' is slang for a corpse revealed when the snow melts. I listened to the audiobook the last time I was in Slovakia (2012) and happened to see it in a bookstore in Bratislava. #setinEasternEurope

SharonGoforth I read Snowdrops and really liked it. 8y
