Washington's Spies: The Story of America's First Spy Ring | Alexander Rose
Turn: Washingtons Spies Now a new original series on AMC Basing his tale on remarkable original research, historian Alexander Rose reveals the unforgettable story of the spy ring that helped America win the Revolutionary War. For the first time, Rose takes us beyond the battlefront and into the shadowy underworld of double agents and triple crosses, covert operations and code breaking, and unmasks the courageous, flawed individuals who inhabited this wilderness of mirrorsincluding the spymaster at the heart of it all, George Washington. Praise for Washingtons Spies Alexander Rose tells this important story with style and wit.Pulitzer Prizewinning author Joseph J. Ellis Fascinating . . . Bailedbailed

I hated to bail on this book since it was a #LPMBC book but I just couldn‘t get into it (or past page 50). It was interesting but I had a hard time focusing. I‘m not sure if it‘s because things got so busy in August with kids getting ready to go back to school & then starting or what. I have been a real reading funk all month long. Finally got it in the mail. @sharread it‘s on its way to you, should be there by Friday. Sorry to not finish the book

ncsufoxes I hated to bail too because I never give up on books. I hope that everyone else enjoys it. 3y
sharread Okay thanks. ❤❤❤ 3y

Pickpick

First off for #LMPBC #Round12 #GroupN. This book is a bit dry and overly detailed in some spots. In others it‘s a rollicking ride—especially the chapter on the treachery of Benedict Arnold and the capture of Major John Andre. In the end I learned interesting things about an important but overlooked component of the Revolutionary War. If it weren‘t for the actions of the Culper Spy Ring, the war may have ended very differently. Off to the mailbox!

Kloves2read You should watch the show! It‘s only 4 seasons and the first season is a bit slow but boy it‘s quite a roller coaster! I know Netflix had it on for a time. AMC is the creator of the show if you want to research to see where you can view it. 3y
Amiable @Kloves2read I was thinking about trying to find the show, yes! I'm curious about how it was done. 3y
Kloves2read @Amiable The ironic part of the show, is that most of the actors are British playing American roles, and they were never taught the American Revolution in school. I love watching the behind the scenes to learn the creative process of putting a history related book into a show. They interviewed some of the actors and it was interesting how little they knew in regards to the war and the people who risked their lives, for the cause. (edited) 3y

Kloves2read @Amiable Especially these brave cabbage farmers and their friends. I love how the American spy ring was never compromised bc of the loyalty between Abe, Caleb and Ben bc they had been lifelong friends. But yet on the British side they kept turning coats on a regular basis. For them the cause was not a personal one and it‘s bc of that loyalty that I believe was the heart of us winning that war. 3y
Amiable @Kloves2read One of the things I‘ve taken away from reading the history of the Revolutionary War is that a whole lot of dumb luck was involved, too! 3y
Amiable @Kloves2read And also? I am just now noticing that you and I have the exact same CS Lewis quote on our profiles! Why are we not friends in real life? 😀 3y
sharread Oh I'm looking forward to this one. 😁👍❤ 3y
Kloves2read @Amiable Oh absolutely! Dumb luck and great timing! 3y
Kloves2read @Amiable Hahaha! Absolutely! 🤣 I didn‘t even notice the quotes! 3y
Amiable @ncsufoxes Did you receive the book yet? The post office said it should have gotten to you by Thursday. 3y
ncsufoxes @Amiable Yes, it came. It‘s just been busy the last few days (it was my daughter‘s birthday Thursday): 3y
Amiable @ncsufoxes Oh, no worries or hurry! I just am extremely skeptical of the postal service‘s promises these days. 🙄 3y
Amiable @ncsufoxes And also, happy birthday to your daughter! 🎉🎊🎁🎂 3y

Happy Independence Day America! On this day in 1776 Congress officially adopted the Declaration of Independence (the signing wouldn't happen for another month). Colonial history has always been my favorite in American history, with Lafayette being one of my favorites - such an adorable little Frenchman! #bookster #bookish #booklover #bookworm #bookporn #independenceday #fourthofjuly #americanhistory #usa

I wrote my thesis on female spies in the American Revolution and Rose's book was very, very helpful. My copy is totally destroyed with pages falling out because I referenced it so much during my research. #moreorless
